I've had a few spiders in my property during the passed week.

What is the cause of this? Do they come from outside? Through gaps?

They will have been hiding under your bed all winter, but are now leaving. Ninja

must have a nest, they can be quite sizeable, up to a couple of thousand spiders.

only joking! Probably just a few babies hatching, just catch them and put them out the back door.

They will be young ones looking for a way out or a permanent home. In the late summer/autumn time the big ones we see around the house are males looking for females to mate with. This time of year they are just passing through!

Just pop them outside on a piece of card if you can get them that is!

UK spiders are completely harmless.
Occasionally a nasty sneeks over in fruit imports like grapes - but very very rarely.
Good job kinster jnr isn't an Aussie though!

They eat flies so are good guys.

Mind you, you still don't want too many of them in the house!

Oh my god I hate spiders so much. Our cats get rid of them okay though! The big cat eats the little buggers!

I have to say thought that in our living room, which shouldn't be called that as we are almost never in it, we seem to get them nesting - just tiny little ones that I can cope with. I have to bring my feather duster in there all the time because the cobwebs are amazing - big long strands from the sofa to the (12 ft) ceiling!

I keep hovering around the window which is where they like their nests and disturbing the nests with a very long handled duster - any other tips for getting rid of them except letting the cats in there?!

There is nothing to worry about. There are no venomous spiders in the UK.

It is perfectly common and normal for spiders to start appearing around now. It's Spring. breeding season. Unless you hermetically seal your home, there is no way to keep them out, but there is no real reason to anyway.

Some of them give a small nip if trodden on, but this too is harmless. Your baby should be perfectly safe no matter how many spiders you have running around her.

Quinie.

Try hoovering rather than hovering, and you will catch the eggs in those hard to reach corners. Vacuuming spiders does them no harm, as they can escape out of your vacuum nozzle somewhere later on and make a new home in your garden instead. Big Grin

My gran swears that conkers get rid of spiders. She has them scattered about her house and to be honest i cant ever remember seeing a spider there.
Spiders aint a problem in my house as i just have to say the word and my dogs go mad, come running and eat them.

I've discovered that Vanish kills them, then they're easy to get rid of. Sounds harsh I know but I'd not be able to go near a live spider to get rid of it!

That is cruel. You are effectively dissolving and burning the poor creatures alive.

Can you not instead get one of those spider suction cup thingies that are on a nice long pole to catch them and release them outside?

Slightly off topic but No2 has made a spider from a cottage cheese pot, black paper and black pipe cleaners at nursery. So we hung it from the desk lamp so it dangled in front of the computer screen. When OH came home he screamed like a girl and nearly banged his head on the ceiling he jumped up so high. Me & No2 had a good old laugh!

Nope. They've victimised me all my life* so if Mr H is out for too long (e.g. overnight & the spider's stopping me getting to bed) then it's the quickest way.

* I know it's not the same spiders but these are suffering for the sins of the others. It's unfortunate for them that my childhood traumas resulted in hatred as well as fear.
