The kitchen planning is coming on apace here...having worked out a preliminary sketch of the units I want from Ikea, it seems that they'll only cost about £700 so I'm thinking maybe I could splash out a bit on better worktops. Anyone got slate? Or can recommend anywhere that sells it?
Am open to other thoughts too - the kitchen will be oak-coloured and there are quarry tiles on the floor.
I also need to decide about tiling/splashback/risers of course......
Sounding good, Gulp! Maybe you could have some slate risers as well - that seems to be what everyone's doing in these kitchen magazines (the practicality is still in debate here, of course!). Or it sounds like it's quite a rustic style of kitchen, so maybe tiles would be good?

At the risk of sounding stupid (but hey, that wouldn't be the first time): what does a slate worktop look like (give us a link please)?
I may be getting old and confused, but I thought slate was a relatively soft substance, so maybe not ideal for a worktop. I also suspect it might be magnificently expensive - I think it would be very hard to get large bits of slate as needed for a worktop.
The worktop I've always longed for, if I had an unlimited budget, is Corian. I love the way you can have your sink all moulded as one with the worktop so you don't get any joints. Looks very pretty.
