Hi

Firstly - just found this site, and I am very impressed!

Anyway, my wife and I are expecting our first baby this year (October), and I am keen to put in some lighting to get the best from the nursery.

The room is about 7' by maybe 10' with the door at one end and the window at the opposite end (i.e. the length goes away from you when you go in).

I was thinking about putting a dimmer switch on the main light, and having a fairly standard shade on it. Also, I am considering putting some LED or fibre optic lights in the skirting boards (spaced maybe 40-60cm apart) so that when we go in to feed etc there is a nice glow, instead of having to have the big light on.

Does anyone have any other suggestions, or ideas? I guess all i want is some cosy "night lighting", which will be relaxing and not jarring for the baby (so will sleep better - neither of us do well when we're tired!)

Incidentally, I am a tech-aholic, so will be putting an X10 motion sensor in and hooking the "night-lights" up, so that when you enter the room, at night, the lights come on automatically.

I'm sure some of you have some better ideas than me!

Thanks

Hi

Firstly congraulations Smile

Dimmer is a must - I have 4 kids and they all have them and I would not be with out them.

Re the shade, consider using an uplighter shade - baby will spend alot of time looking up and a light in their eyes is not a good idea, You can get some really nice mobile lights which have things hanging down which they would like looking at. Try Lighting World.

I would think again about lights in the skirting board - the baby will soon be a toddler and they love to poke about and electrics at this level good be a danger.

Hope this helps

Tee

Again, firstly congratulations!

Secondly Smile you can tell it's your first, bless you!
Trust me, come October you won't care what light is on, you won't care how pretty the fibre optics are!

Dimmers are useful yes. But I wouldn't bother having lights that come on auto when you go in. I think, again bless you because it's obviously new and exciting for you, you may be thinking about it a tad too much and going a bit too techno.
It's just a little baby and it just wants a bit of milk in the middle of the night. Keep everything else to a complete minimum from the outset or you'll be making a rod for your own back!
I've never used a light inside the room, I've always found the landing light or a nightlight out there, with the door ajar sufficient. I've found any light in the actual room too much.

Any sorry to break it to you, but 9 times out of 10 sleep might not be exactly relaxing, pretty skirting light show or not Big Grin
Save your cash, buy some earplugs!
