Was this a repeat? I haven't seen it before & Kirsty paid another visit to Shane in August I see. Confused

I have to say that was one of the most impressive of the relocation shows I've seen. Its nice to see 2 properties purchased well within budget and enough money left over to allow Shane to start his own business! How canny & clever is that?

I'm not a huge fan of period properties and I am a bit anti-fashion (I shop at Primark! Red Face Big Grin ) but I was in awe of Shane. He was able continue to do what he enjoys in his enviroment, and I have to say I was quite inspired. Good luck to him I say. Smile

I hope I get to make a living from something I enjoy one day!

Yes, he seemed like a nice bloke. I remembered this from when it was first on. But honestly, where was the money coming from? Ok, so he had property in West Hampstead, but to spend all that on renovations etc. and build up a business as well, plus train fares etc. Methinks mummy & daddy may well have had a hand in it. I wish these shows would be a little bit more open about the participants' finances, but then I guess fewer people would volunteer to go on.

I just assumed that judging by the business he was in, he was on a very good income.

Kirsty made the infamous comment about the sale of his flat: "Shane has made £140K on it". Errr yes BUT the 2 properties he bought must also have likely risen in value!

Several points to make and I don't know where to start! OK, point one, why such a HUGE house in Margate? Yes it's lovely (no comment about whether he'd replaced the HIDEOUS windows at the front or not - as a period features man I'd have to assume so) but for one person? He did refer to 'we' at some point so perhaps wasn't solo but... Point two - sadly I disagree with Kirsty - I thought his artwork was just awful and did not look good in that house. In fact the move to Margate, which may have made him more prodigious, served to make his 'art' dull, flat, unexciting. Looked like the outpouring of a rather depressed person to be honest. OK, OK I know, a matter of taste!!! Finally, Kirsty is starting to look and walk like Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie and that cannot be a good thing for any woman.

I would have assumed so too (rightly or wrongly) and maybe he only fancied the pants off Kirsty in terms of converting them into a sail for some ocean-going vessel.

I think that's a bit unfair Patrick. He only needed around a £200K mortgage and he was already a successful fashion designer (a google search shows how successful he is). That would mean him having to have an annual income of around £60K which sounds perfectly feasible to me.

He also had around £30K left over from his original budget plus the rent from the London flat to pay for the renovations and his business startup. He had also sold 45 paintings which I'm guessing brought in rather more than just pocket money. (A second google search shows that the gallery he exihits his paintings at sell paintings starting at around £250 each!)

I also thought he was a genuinely nice bloke, very polite and didn't mess Phil and Kirsty about with his budget/requirements. He even seemed grateful!

I remembered him from last time, he did seem a nice chap. I didn't understand why he bought such a huge house though. He did seem grateful didn't he, it was quite sweet!

However to be cynical, even back then they were having trouble trying to find someone who wanted two live-in properties. He clearly never intended to live in the Brockley flat, he was always going to rent it out.

Shane appeared to be a nice guy and what I liked about him was his decisiveness compare to some hummers and hawwers you get on that show.

Agreed the house was very large for a single guy, albeit he may have had a "partner" and he needed space for his artwork.

I thought the two properties were great value for £295k even given it was 2003.

His artistic taste and talent were obvious and I really liked what he did with the decor, his paintings clearly were popular too, he sold 45 in his first year displaying in the local gallery. Regarding his income then it is fairly obvious that as a successful fashion designer for Gucci then he was going to be able to afford the mortgage on these properties.

I don't think he fancied Kirsty as he was probably of the other persuasion. I have to say that Kirsty has lovely features and if she changed her fashion sense (no more big buttons), talked with fewer marbles in her mouth and lost a few pounds then she would be a property babe to match the Beeny babe.

I've now seen this prog twice and enjoyed it both times. Yes he does seem a very pleasant, polite guy and has extremely good taste in decor, the house looked really beautiful when he had finished doing it up. Somewhat large (6 bedrooms!) for one person, even with a partner. But I suppose he needed a studio, an office, etc. I'm glad it all worked out so well for him.

It is nice to see someone with good manners, so different from that horrible Mark in this week's PL.

I think that's so patronising! The same as my gran used to say to me'Ooh you'd look so much better if you smiled more' Roll Eyes I think Kirsty is perfectly lovely as she is (not that I fancy her as I'm female and married) What you are trying to say is if she changed totally to fit the stereotype of a lads mag favourite, that would be preferable?

I agree Tiggsey, Kirsty is lovely as she is. I even like the big-button coat (although not the blue tights).

Not patronising hopefully as it wasn't addressed to Kirsty, presumably she doesn't read this forum or if she does then will take it with a pinch of salt or in good humour.

I'm not advocating she get her kit off in loaded either but I was complimenting her looks although I concede telling her she needs to lose a few pounds isn't that flattering, she might say the same of me.

It was a good episode and you could tell he was really happy with how things had worked out, I don't think he could believe his luck! Good on him.

Personally I think Kirsty was rather taken with him - 'Oh Shane, that's wonderful!'

I agree! Who says well Phil is OK but he would be better with hair?? I may not always like Kirsty's outfits but she dresses really well for her hourglass shape, and it's great to actually see someone on TV who is sexy and not a size 8 (speaking as another married female) Sorry but the Beeny does wear some shocking tops - top heavy girls really shouldn't wear cropped sleeves.

Of course the males out there (my husband included) don't watch for their outfits....

I quite liked his paintings, but I would have got a bit bored with the green everywhere

Why shouldn't single people buy big houses if they are prepared to do justice to them, do them up nicely, appreciate them and can afford to?

He put in lots of hard work and he clearly wanted to use the space he had in the Margate house. It didn't look like he wanted to live in the other property, but it was nice to see Brockley again. Mate of mine used to live there and was always telling me what an undiscovered treasure the area was.

As an artist, he would need plenty of light and space and the hse seemed to give him that.

BTW, I don't think £250 is all that much to pay at a gallery, most of the ones in the current exhib at my local gallery are over £800.

Hear hear - I'd been wondering about all those comments too. I'd give anything to be able to live in a house that size - and believe me, every inch of space would be used ! Smile

Can you point at it . . . . is it on the trolley ?

I wasn't saying that it was too much - just pointing out that he wasn't using "mummy and daddy's money".

I did remark earlier that "the house was somewhat large (6 bedrooms!) for one person, even with a partner". But I didn't intend a dig at Shane, as you say he is perfectly entitled to buy a 20 bedroom house if he wants to and can afford to. I was really thinking of the financial upkeep on such a large house, particularly the heating bills, the decorating costs, the inconvenience of all those stairs, etc. It seems to me that all that space would make your life more difficult and expensive than is necessary, particularly if you live alone. However, each to his own taste.
