Hi, my neighbours have built a conservatory. It's within planning regs, as far as I know and I don't have a problem with it as such, except for the fact that it throws a lot of light onto our garden. It's right next to our fence and we have tiny gardens. It extends to over a third the length of our garden. I like to sit in my garden in the summer with candles and fairy lights and I can see that the effect is going to be ruined as they always have the conservatory fully lit up. Would I be within my rights to install a high fence to block the light? I've thought of plants, but much of the light falls on the patio. Any ideas would be weclome.
What about a fence made of trellis with something dense but pretty planted to form a screen? you could try a scented climber aswell for evenings outside. It would be more of a feature for both parties and much less likely to cause arguments than a big plain fence. Have you spoke to your neighbour about it? They might not realise the problem unless told.
How high would the fence need to be? There are local planning laws limiting the height of a fence at the back of a property, usually 2 metres, but you can get away with a bit of trellis on top of that. Any higher than that would probably look really unsightly from you own point of view anyway.
I like the idea of a trellis. Thanks for the suggestions. This does highight some issues with planning laws though, in that I can't put a 2 metre fence up, but someone can have a 4 metre high extension right next to the fence without planning permission. It doesn't really seem to be fair. Ah well!
