I don't know where you're based, but would you have any idea why it is the Corporation of London (The City) that deals with domestic aspestos disposal for virtually all London councils? I wouldn't have thought The City's works dept was anywhere near as big as the "normal" boroughs. Maybe they have expertise through the refurb of many office buildings.
I had a modest quantity at my old place (ancient garden fence) and they handled it amazingly efficiently (and free of charge too).
------------------------------ 35% constitutes neither a majority nor a mandate
I've got an old asbestos garage that I plan to dispose of later this summer, just wondered what the procedure is for disposal ie do I just contract a specialist company or do I have to go though the council.
Also any approx pricing that you think a job like this will cost would be appreciated. I know it will vary due to things like location, size, etc but just guideline costings would be cool. Also will the price vary considerably if they dismantle the garage compared to them collecting it already dismantled.
When my neighbour contacted the Council about his asbestos garage roof he wanted to dispose of to get a wooden one on instead, the council bod more or less said that the Council was obliged to give people the 'by the letter' answer to questions asked , and even the lowest grade stuff he would have to advise be dealt with by a specialist firm if he was pushed . He clearly was advising - dont push me into cornering you into using an over the top firm. In the end, it wasnt a specialist firm, but a roofing firm who wetted down the whole thing before removal, had their guys masked, and put the pieces in a closed skip thing overnisght, and took them to a tip licensed to receive asbestos. The price was nowhere near the quote he got from the 'asbestos specialist' firm who had insisted that only they as licensed handlers (having applied for special paperwork to do the job for you) were legal. Now I havent a clue onthe rights and wrongs of this, Im just passing on what happened to a neighbour .
Have you had any samples taken to determine that it is asbestos and what type it is? Some types are licensable which means you have to give notice to the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) that you are going to remove a licensable material and you have to get a licensed contractor to remove it. The first step is to get samples taken, then take it from there. Depending on where you live my company could help you if you are interested. Do not get a removal company to take samples as they have a vested interest in the results, get an independany company. I hope this info has been helpful to you.
