Hi,

Can someone please clarify these new gas laws for me?
I'm putting a new kitchen in my new house, thus need to install a new gas hob. I know that new laws came in at the start of the year saying that gas appliances etc have to be installed by a corgi registered tradesman, so that you get a certificate for the work.

But, is this the law or more of a guideline to house owners? And, does this apply to electrical work aswell?

Yes on all questions. Mandatory now and will need to be shown if you ever sell the house.

It's been law for a LONG TIME that gas appliances had to be fitted by someone CORGI registered - and it is law.. not recommendation..

Electricity laws came in this year - but I don't know how strict they are.. Someone like Melboy, the_dougal etc should be able to help.

Melboy, I had all my gas an electrical work completed by the end of last year. Am I OK without certificates?

Just had a look on the CORGI website (dont know why I didnt think of that before) , answered all my questions.

Yes you are OK. April 1st 2005 the new rulings came into force BUT we have been told that there is now a 'lead in time' until June for full compliance!

Thanks Melboy. As it happens I think Tony Blair could have done a better job of my wiring than the electrician did (what does JIB mean by the way? Jerk In Boilersuit?)At best untidy and at worst downright dangerous, most of it has had to be redone!

Joint Industry Board (JIB) A register of competent qualified electricians who meet the boards criteria of safety and standards.
The chances are your Man was using a false ID and if his work was as bad as you say then a quick phone call to the right people will tell you if he had been telling the truth and if not Trading Standards need to know because people like this are a danger to all Home owners. Electricity kills, as does Gas, which is why there are Laws to protect the consumer.
Personally I don't think Mr Blair could have done a better job because he never seems to get anything right but expect no more of a career Politician.
