2 heating engineers have sworn blind that I need an unvented sealed system but I have read this vented vs unventedand I'm v. worried about getting the unvented one.

Of course I have asked the engineers but they only say that vented is technology from 25 years ago .... any knowledge or experiences?

Hi

You are now required by law to install a Combi Boiler.
I do not think they are vented.
Blame John Prescott

Hello and Welcome solpuerto.

By Law it is a Condensing Boiler that is required (from April 2004)
But as for the original question......what do I know? Roll Eyes

The advantage of having an unvented system, is that you don't need a header tank, and you shouldn't have any problems with air in radiators.

Any heating system can be made unvented, as long as you have somewhere to put the pressure vessel, and the other bits an pieces.

You can still get non condensing boilers, as there are some situations where they are unsuitable.

As Mel says there is no compulsion to have a combi just to have a condenser - and that can be pressurised or not. Also, in case any one is in this position, non-condensers can be fitted still - the corgi engineer has to justify to corgi why he is doing it.

I've decided to go for the open system. I just couldn't see the advantages to the closed one for me and both the open and closed are A rated. I've heard a lot of anecdotes about closed systems losing pressure and leaks occurring - I know one anecdote does not a rubbish system make (hence posting on here) but given there seem to be more disadvantages in my case than advantages, i'm sticking with open.

Are you saying that the customer gets no choice ?

the customer gets to choose whether they would like a non-condenser then the engineer gets to say whether you can have it or not! This being on the basis of whether they think that they can make a case to Corgi - my impression is that this isn't too hard.

Quite right. Most heating people I know, do their best to talk their customers out of having a condensing boiler fitted.
The final choice is with the customer, they are the ones who pay.
