Quick question for those in the know.

Are gas fires, for the sake of fitting, pretty much standard? Not the flueless ones, just the normal ones?

I have this one that's not all that old but must be coming on 10 years - well when I bought it my mum was treating me so I got pretty much the cheapest I could find, which at the time was one of those quite big things black with gold coloured fittings, non coal effect. Back then that was all you could get for £300.

Now the prices are so much more reasonable I want to get something far more compact.

Is the hole in the chimney breast going to be pretty much right for these compact ones, bearing in mind that the front of the one I have now is sort of huge but the back bit that slots in isn't?

Also, B&Q seem reasonable, anywhere else nationally that is recommended? I will probably also see if my heating engineer can get me what I want once I have chosen if there's no real difference.

Had a new gas fire a couple of years ago - it's wall mounted, not flush fitting.

The fire came with an aluminium back plate which fits over the hole in the chimney breast, this has a hole in it about 75mm square. The back of the fire has a small 'chimney' which fits snuggly in the hole in the plate and allows gases to go up the chimney.

We bought our fire from a local supplier who was knowledgeable. He arranged a CORGI fitter to fit it for £50.

Sounds like mine so looks like I won't have a problem with a straight swap.

My heating engineer will probably charge the same, I will ask him if it's best that I buy the fire that I want or I tell him and he gets it, whichever is best moneywise.

Did your guy take your old one away?
