Disappointed

I'm thinking, increasingly, since the housing market hit a bit of a rut, this forum has gone a bit ... Disappointed um ... Disappointed well, boring.
I noticed this particularly tonight as my kids broke my TV today and so I'm allowed to play on the internet for hours and hours instead of ironing in front of TV rubbish.
I posted something ages ago and it's still the last thing posted.

So can we not have a random thread like loads of other forums have? I came across this forum nearly two years ago randomly and it's the only one I ever bookmarked. Crying

So does *anybody* have *anything* vaguely house related they wish to discuss in the forth coming months till this lull is over?!

Like, i.e. I'd never admit this usually Blush but I'm designing my own house using a naff paint programme. (It's pretty!!)This is my back-up - the first choice, should I win the lottery or have my book published, is a house on the way in-between the villages I call home.
It's a detached, not even slightly massive but if I had the means I'd offer them a million and put a stone plague on it saying 'I did it'. It's not anywhere near the best house in the area but I drove by one day and thought that was it... and also I'm not particularly materialistic.

So in the interest of this forum not dying a Pflusk induced death Big Grin ( Valentine you Pflusk but you did will it!) does anybody have a house they have earmarked as their 'the one' house?

Or anything they want to ... do still in their life? Like I want a piano. God, somebody help me save the forum ...

Hey HC, why not come over and give the "dark side"
a try? Plenty more discussion over at Housepricecrash (you know the rest)!!! There are a lot of nutters over there, a better site in my humble opinion has to be globalhousepricecrash.

Far more chat about housing in general over there, you might learn a thing or two (other than the repetitive chats about HIPs we seem to be having of late here)?

Singingpig has died a death, the best chat they have these days regards property in Chile or something, the long term property piggies too ashamed to show their faces and say they were wrong....

As for my plans, got loads I want to do still!!!

Learn how to sail!

Finish the qualifications I started years ago, keep going back to and mean to sit the exams for but never get round to!

Go and see the Uranguatans in Borneo (before their homes get chopped down for good Mad)

Looking forward to having kids... just not right at the moment!

Just currently sat back enjoying life as it shoots me by!

Done the whole "design my own house" thing, came to the conclusion after speaking to a few couples that have done it that Im not so sure the stress is worth it!!! Labour of Love springs to mind! Besides, I dont think I could ever convince my wife to live in a caravan for a year, no matter what the benefits were, even if I promised her a fully fitted kitchen!

Oh, you mention lull ending in months, I think we are going to be chewing the fat over not very much for a little longer than a few months love! Try 3 years Eek

As I said, try ghpc in particular, I promise, we wont bite, besides, there is far more to talk about out there than homes!

Negative equity sucks!

What?! Wash your mouth out! I give the "stalemate" (totally refusing now to call it a crash!) ooh a year tops. Something has to give. I predict ... that they'll start selling again. Not necessarily for more but they'll start moving again ...

HC i agree with you that this forum has gone a bit flat! I still come here on everyday and have a look but to be truthful, its all doom and gloom and whenever anybody posts anything its often turned round to Pflusk doom and gloom thread!

Even this one seems to be doing it, "Oh, you mention lull ending in months, I think we are going to be chewing the fat over not very much for a little longer than a few months love! Try 3 years "

As for the "dark side" HC and I's opinions are exactly the same on that forum! Too clicky, but each to their own!

Like you HC i also discovered this forum about 2 years ago, just after i moved and i earmarked too! OH thinks i'm potty when i say i'm on my forum again. Must admit in the last three months have found another forum, but thats all about holidays as we are off to see Micky Mouse in 3 weeks, so i've been spending my time over there.

I know there's a lot of doom and gloom about, but not every thread has to be turned into a miserable one!

I've noticed other people on here commenting how they've kept away because its all doom and gloom !

..... on a happier note HC what sort of colour schemes are you going for?

Ah yes, well I've done this "in real life" in the last 18 months although (being Germany) it's an apartment, not a house.

I posted here about 18 months ago when I decided to go new build (rather than buying an existing one) and said then that it'd probably be the only chance in my life I get to do it Wink.

But it's wonderful to see it all actually here. I was a bit nervous about how a "concept" would look in real life - that I'd make some big mistakes that I'd spend 20 years having to live with etc - but it's all great Big Grin.

One of the benefits of a new build is you get top spec and the modern design. So I now live in a glass fronted apartment in the middle of town - which makes for a very very public life Crazy - with solar panels etc.......

This Forum has been going for about 6 years now and initially it was very good and informative and very social.
It all sort of fell apart (imo) when the forum was split into various catagories which diluted the overall content somewhat as really all the title threads were to do about property and there is only so much time you can spend poring over each individual property section.
The other thing was, that if people were seeking information it was possible to post a link to pass info.on. C4 Forum Editor stopped this practice which was really frustrating and annoying.
Editing out: You make a mistake or omit something the inability to go back and correct is also very annoying.
Heavy and unecessary editing out by moderators also caused a lot of anger amongst regular contributers.
A lot of the regulars who posted here got so fed up with the frustrations that they all moved to a new more user friendly forum than this one and by and large they are all still there.
Just my thoughts on why you don't see much happening on this Forum these days.
Mel.

The mortgage / finance side has spilled into "current affairs" these days of course too.

Quite a few threads on the "News" forum here.

All of what ypu guys have said is what i've seen written over and over again on different forums... Disappointed maybe it is just the 'culture' of the forum Confused i have to say that from what i've seen here the posters are no where near as aggresive as some forums and there is clearly a level of high intelligence. Cest la ve i guess.

^^ what Mel said. Heavyhanded and illogical moderation has a lot to answer for.

I can't see the stagnation of the forum is connected to the property downturn (or whatever you want to call it), because buying and selling has never been the *main* topic on here.

Years ago we used to talk about the C4 property shows but from what I can gather most people are sick to the back teeth with them (I am).

Although I agree with the points raised about moderation, edit facilities etc etc, I do feel there is a link between the state of the housing market and number of people contributing.

People are much more interested in their assets when they perceive them to be more valuable.

Of course a home is much more than an asset, but it is not called 'property' for nothing...

I seem to remember though, that this forum was equally quiet about a year ago, when housing prices were still chugging ahead. I can remember you starting a thread about it pont Smile

Bear in mind it is school holidays so some people who usually post either won't have time, or are away themselves.

Another gripe about the 'new' forum - is this the same for everyone? - posts do not show in different colours as read or unread.

Velvet, maybe your memory is better than mine, but I seem to remember making the exact same point then (maybe market was just at the turning point?) and you making yours... Smile

Maybe this sense of deja vu is what's dragging this forum down. We've seen it all before Big Grin

What a curious shade of green this forum is in! Big Grin Reminds me of the old bathroom suite in my parents' house! Nod

I believe that the rules have been softened now - you can post links Nod but I'm not sure if we are allowed to post links of properties for sale though. Confused

Perhaps we could discuss frugal living?

Or how to recreate the drab orange tones of the 70's bearing in mind thats what life in the UK feels like at the moment?

I would love to get an allotment next year actually, get my tin hat on and grow some veg, perhaps with some others from my community.

Tell you what, we could always rejoice the death of UK property as an "asset"(I REALLY HATE that word...) and instead celibrate it as a home for our families...with all that entails. Perhaps we can have a chat about improving our homes for the families benefit instead of "adding value"...

Novel Idea, never catch on...

I think the whole problem with this forum is the way it's been run in the last year - people have got fed up with it, found better forums and haven't bothered coming back.

I disagree that a downturn has got anything to do with it - people still live in homes and have problems and observations and questions, so I can't see why that would affect it.

No, i guess just different ones. As a new member to this forum i can tell you that the messages and the behaviour on here is no different to any other forum i've used.

Ahem... I may be wrong pflusk but I think you told us on another thread you are 27, if I am remembering rightly that means you weren't alive in the 70s. I was and I can tell you it was nothing like this.

I've been growing veg for years, you well are behind the times. Wink And most of us on here have always emphasised improving your home like YOU want it, not for the benefit of a mythical future buyer, so you are aiming at the wrong target.

Bertie I use a lot of other forums too, the problem with this one for the past year or two is that there are too few active posters - and that is in large part because of the way it has been run (IMO). As Mel says, a few years back it was much livelier, and very friendly, but the was it was run gradually stamped all over that.

We need some more trials and tribulations like the tales of Anne and Dick the dastardly conveyancers. Who painted the forum green?

I reckon it was that dastardly Kirstie woman!

Velvet, you are right, wasnt around in the 70's, but I have studied the economic situation at that time. Labours current weakness, together with high inflation and low wage settlements is the perfect storm for en masse strikes, to start with. Good old Noo Labour hey?

Then its going to get as bad as the 1930s.

Good job you grow your own veg! I started this year, first chance I got, not done so well, the chard was easy, the tomatoes and peppers arent quite there yet... Keeping my eyes peeled for a cheap greenhouse or lean-to on Ebay!! Blinkin slugs got at my herb garden though (not su much agarden as a few pots)... Managed to do all the border flowers from seed though, which was quite a task, but saved a fortune over what I would pay for pregrown.

The New Potatoes we did were good though. Currently away from the UK, one thing I am looking forward to is a big roast with all the Veg (the americans only do grilled stuff unfortunately).

Sounds like a great proverb (if that's what it is) but I have no idea what it means! Well I have some idea but some explanation would be welcome (sorry, English is not my first language).
