Sorry, another boring double glazing question.. Roll Eyes
5 companies have now seen and quoted (or quotes in the post) - all said they could double glaze our flat from inside. (2 of our 6 windows can't be accessed externally anyhow.)
6th company said 'No way we can double glaze a 5th floor flat without scaffolding, health and safety law would never allow it'
Eek
Phoned Council Building Control - not their job
Phoned HSE - they didn't seem to think there was a specific law against double glazing a 5th floor flat from inside without scaffolding. They said to check the company had done it before and suggest they put signs up below.

Am I worrying about nothing again? Or are the 5 companies cowboys Roll Eyes
Mr P, if you're there, would appreciate your trade knowledge (or anyone else) Smile

Apart from our patio door, all our windows were done from inside.. Ok, so we only have a first floor flat - but can't see why they would need scaffolding if they don't need external access.

Don't quote me though, I'm no expert.

I don't know of any law against it, but obviously the fitters would have to be careful removing the original frame and glass. PVC frames can be made so that the glass is installed from the inside, so it is usually easy enough to fit new frames and glaze them without having to go outside at all.

Thanks Smile
Given that I guess our original aluminium casement windows would have been installed from outside (as part of the whole block), do you reckon removing them from inside would pose a problem then? The 2 windows that give onto the big drop have a grassy area below where people sometimes sit out in summer time. I don't want to kill my neighbours Eek

There would be no problem fitting the windows from the inside (as Mr P said). The only slightly tricky bit is sealing the new frames from the inside...hanging out of five floors with a sealant gun isnt my idea of a happy day!. You usually get a much neater finish doing them from the outside but its not that hard if they're careful and tidy.

As far as I'm aware, its not your problem anyway. As a profesional it is down to him to provide public liability for themselves, you, your property, neighbours etc etc.. As a profesional, it is also his concern to ensure he complies with H&S.
