What exactly is a terrace house?

My mother lives in an end house of a row of 6. It has a garden front, side and back, you enter into a hallway, built in the 50s

Is it a terrace house if not what is it?

I would say your mother lives in an 'end of terrace house' Sometimes people confuse these houses with 'semi-detached' . A semi detached is only a semi detached when it's half of two houses together.

I'm sure sombody here will give you a better description Moon

Oops indeed Big Grin

Anyways, a row of houses all joined together sharing heat through their side walls, is a terrace. A house in the terrace is a terraced house. If it's on the end, joining only one of the other houses, it's an end terrace. If it's not on the end and is joined to a house on both sides, it's a mid terrace.

A similar but distinct type is known as link detached, this is similar to the terrace but with garages linking the individual houses.

And just to make it more confusing they decide to call new built terraced properties 'town houses'.

If more than 2 houses are joined together on either side they are classed as terraced properties. If you are the last one in a row of 6 you are one of the end terraces, you can't call yourself semi detached, even though in essence you are, because the one you are attached to is attached to someone else.

I live in a row of 4 terraced houses, I am the end terrace.

What do you call a house that used to be a link detached with garage attached to neighbours house but the owner has build an extension over the garage so the house looks attached to its neighbours?

Technically its still a link detached. IMO they should be reclassified as semi's.
