I hate white ceilings (in rooms that aren't white, that is) and find it quite irritating how rarely decorating magazine photos include the ceilings of rooms for you to see if other people have used better alternatives. At the mo I'm decorating my bedroom - mix of silver emulsion and charcoal/silver wallpaper, with charcoal floor and woodwork, and violet quilt/blinds/cushions. But I'm just stumped re what to do with the ceiling - white's just wrong, more silver would be too much, ditto more charcoal. Anyone got any inspired ideas?
I saw a house on some auction property show, where this guy bought a house in stoke, did it up, painted the flaming walls and ceiling in lilac!! Looked foul.
I think white brightens up the room, and helps to accentuate the wall colours/colourings, so it's white all the way for me.
I agree. Any more colour in the room as you describe it might not quite work. Seeing as you are having dark woodwork. You could choose an off white that has a hint of grey, you don't have to go with brilliant white.
Reminds me of an episode of Place in the Sun and one french house had assorted floral and garish wallpapers in each room, on every wall and on the ceilings!

thanks for these. Had been thinking of the palest grey I could find, but was hoping someone would say 'Flapping Dove by Fired Crown and Ball is exactly what you need'...
Have a look on the dulux website (just google it, will come straight up), they have along with all their colour charts ranges that tone, coordinate or contrast all their colours, it's a pretty good site actually.

Ditto here! If you don't like white, you're still probably better off with a pale co-ordinating colour... anything heavy would make it feel like the ceilings are really low.

Is that the same bloke that put Artex on the walls because he couldn't be bothered to smoothen the plaster?!
People from Stoke do not love artex on their walls or anywhere else. Please do not take this bloke as indicative of folks from the Stoke or surrounding area!
Although my ex did do his entire house in lilac, copying from showhomes which have the same colour scheme throughout. Muppet! Then again, it is entirely up to you how you do your interiors.

Dulux white (NOT BRILLIANT WHITE) is a lovely soft, light absorbing white. The only other colour I have ever used is Gardenia which is an off white/cream. With the contemporary sounding colour scheme you have I'd have considered perhaps one of those whites with a hint of colour. A hint of green would go well with your colours.
Mirrors by far the best suggestion! However, have settled on Leyland's 'Soda Mist' which is a very, very, very pale grey with a very, very, very slight hint of something around the purple end of things and very, very, very nice it looks too, IMO.
