yeah that seems the thing, providing someone will buy it!

and if they dont sell it straight away they incur mortgage costs, which eats into their profits

So greedy of them to put the house on the market at such an inflated price - if they'd put it on at £75,000 they'd probably have sold it straight away.

Anyone know if it is still for sale?

So has the house sold since the programme was finished, or is it still a millstone over-priced investment?

I totally agree with what's been said about the son - to me he seemed a relatively attractive, intelligent and industrious guy. I kept wanting to scream at him 'quick - move away from home ! Move to London, join a kibutz (sp) - anything - just get away from your family !'

That bathroom arrangement was totally bizarre. I imagine people buying those sort of houses in traditional mining villages wouldn't necessarily be that surprised to find the bathroom downstairs - but to then open the neighbouring door to find a second one ! Absolute classic.

Didn't you just love Beeny's little skit on 'you come out of the shower with a towel wrapped round you, wave at your guests as you trot to the toilet, then again when you hop upstairs . . . '.

I also loved her quip in the trailer for next weeks when the guy said about having a flushable outside loo and she expressed mock surprise at the luxury !

Simon

Can you point at it . . . . is it on the trolley ?

I loved "oh, we just put it on our credit card". You really couldn't make it up.

It's about getting a balance, though, isn't it. Does anyone else remember a PL from maybe two seasons ago, a young New Zealander also in south Wales? She had lots of problems but because she was a really nice, sensible person (rather like tonight's Tony) you wanted it to succeed for her and were really happy when she pulled it off.

she took on a lot of things which Sarah suggested though, which I think makes the difference. It is so annoying to see people ignore her good advice again and again!

I'm surprised that you all think Beeny knows what she's talking about. Believe me, when it comes down to how a house is contructed - she doesn't.

I just about stopped watching the show after she thought someone cutting the roof's tie-beams was causing the roof to sag when the sag was really the offset to let the water drain the right way.

She sould stick to doing her voice-overs, she might know something about that.

Not only that, the most successful projects have been those that totally ignored her.

I have to say that, from recent memory, that was the most painful Property Ladder I have ever watched. Eek

Can someone refresh my memory: with the bedrooms, was there just a WC on the top floor and no shower? If so, with the only washing/showering facilities only on the lower ground floor, that would be the one thing that would stop me putting an offer in on the property. That former coalbunker/bathroom could have made an excellent utility room instead.!

I am tired, I am weary. I could sleep for a thousand years.

I was a bit annoyed that after all the talk about the upstairs layout, they didn't seem to show what the bedrooms looked like when finished. Were the kids' rooms so messy that they couldn't be shown on TV Confused

I think the format seems to have become based around witless punters who should make "good telly" because of their squabbling, ineptitude, arrogance or eccentricity. Or better still, some combination of these!
I recall that we established that there was a new producer for the previous "muppet" series, coming from a 'reality tv' background.
The building and development choices seem to have been relegated below exploring the "characters" involved. Really, what good was served by giving individual "family members" the opportunity for a solo session to bitch about the others?

Very few punters do seem to end up out of pocket - though several cover their problems by moving in themselves. (What happened to the Poole sisters? Time for a revisit?) But equally, now that the market is no longer a one-way bet, few are showing a worthwhile return on their investment in time and capital.

Lee, I remember someone wanting to make a room in the attic and merrily chopping away at the trusses, with a resulting roof sag, and the star-struck Inspector being as helpful as he could be about the required steel reinforcement...
I don't remember her saying anything really silly, ever. She's pretty hard-nosed, and doesn't like taking risks - especially with taste! But I have wondered about wisdom after the event, the benefits of friendly editing, and whether bits of helpful info (usually about building control) might have been witheld for the sake of 'entertainment'...

Slappity slap...
They just get worse.
MrP lasted all of 5 minutes before he upped and left saying he couldn't watch it as he would only get annoyed. Have to admit my attention did wander rather during the prog.
I thought the son was rather easy on the eye thoughWink

The seriously scary thing is that in a few years time there will be a lot of property up for sale with massive defects in bodged up by muppets like this lot.

I rather took to the son as well, and felt both him and his sister had the rough end of the deal, having to do all the donkey work by themselves, while the parents didn't appear to do anything very much. I really felt that after covering their costs, the parents should give any profits all to their offspring, who worked so hard to make it a success. The best that could be said of the parents, was that at least they weren't obnoxious and arrogant, as in previous progs, although as ever they never listened to any advice from the Beeny.

The toilet arrangement was so barmy that I would have been surprised if ANYONE had put in an offer, although in other ways the house looked nice enough. As usual Beeny was right about not putting kitchen wall units all the way round, only at the ends. By filling all the wallspace available they made the space look that much narrower. But of course no-one ever listens to poor Sarah.

Asking £87K was laughable, and they deserved to get left with it for a long time at that price. I can't understand the EA quoting such a price in the first place. People are so greedy to make a killing, to go and buy ANOTHER property (with credit card, of course!!!) before they had hardly started on the first, was too stupid to believe.

The best thing those two youngsters could do, would be to start out on their own, finances permitting, and leave their parents to find someone else willing to slog away unpaid, doing dirty, unpleasant and possibly dangerous work, for 20 weeks - some hope.

Just to show what a contrived load of nonsense this show is.

How come just as the builder left the house without supporting the ceiling and the son phones Sarah - there just happens to be a camera crew at her side when she takes the call.

These are all stooges for the programme makers and Iam convinced they dont use a penny of their own money.

The tie beam doesn't stop the rafters from sagging.
The tie beam stops the roof from spreading in a lateral direction. The tie beam itself is in 'tension' ie it's being pulled and can actually be replaced by a cable. It makes a basic A-frame.
The house was 'cured' by placing two joist bearers from wall to wall to which upright supports were added up to the rafters. The effect of this is to remove the outward force on the house walls as the load is transmitted down the rafters, down the uprights, into the joist bearers, into the walls and down into the foundations.

It had nothing to do with whether the roof was sagging or not.

Actually if you look at any roof you will find that it is higher at the edges to stop the water running down the walls, but instead making it flow towards the guttering.

I agree. It's reality TV in action.
If you've ever worked on a building site you'll know that nothing worth filming ever happens.

I must be the only person who didn't think the bathrooms were a complete no-no. I was aghast at the thought of no loo on the top floor but they dealt with that and, yes, ideally I would prefer to bathe on that floor too BUT historically loos were always separate to bathrooms (and indeed many people still prefer them to be - because of nasty niffs)). So the only thing that was really weird was putting a shower in with it in addition to already having bathroom.
