Just moved into a house and there is a horrible smell in one of the bedrooms. A neighbour told me that the previous owner knocked over a fish tank in the bedroom prior to moving out. I've ripped up the carpet but think the 'fishy' water has seeped into the floorboards. Any tips as to getting rid of the pong short of replacing the old floor boards?
I've thought a little about this... All I can offer as advice is that it is still stinking because the algae must still be alive. I would suggest bleaching the floorboards, and maybe making sure you get in between the crack with the bleach using a toothbrush. That will kill any algae that is still alive. Failing that, if it doesn't work, you may have to ask the advice of a professional flooring place. They would probably recommend sanding the floor down.
Its not the algi its the bacteria in the water. Its not harmfull but it dose pong a bit. Try washing with a solution of bicarb, Then if that dosnt work wipe with somthing like Zaflora.
