Firstly let me just say, I am new to BOTH this forum chatting marlarky, and also (I'm ashamed to say) CLEANING!! I'm eighteen and just got my own place and whereas when I was at home I hoovered, washed up, kept things tidy etc. I'm rapidly realising this isn't enough to maintain a geniunly clean household!!

My main query for you guys today is about my washing machine. I desperatly need to find a good way of cleaning out the detergent drawer as the previous user quite clearly didn't realise it existed. I've given it a quick wash but I can still see lumps of gunk hidden round the back of the drawer. Also, when my washing machine is on, and even when the cycle has finished I don't seem to be getting that fresh clean clothes smell. I was confused as to why this may be but after sticking my head in the drum and inhaling deeply I realised that there is a funny smell in there. Not awful, and not unclean but just strange. The only way I can describe it is sort of oily, if that makes sense??!!?!?!?

I'm guessing the drum could use a good wash and I'm not sure how to go about it. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it so much!!!

I know it probably sounds like an obvious question, and implore you not to think I'm a remidial! I'm just not used to this!!!!

Thank you in anticipation.

Smile

Hi, Kate Get a box of calgon in the supermarket. It will clean the drum and other parts of your machine perfectly. Always use it of and on when washing. Just put it in with your powder. Have a good look at your dispencer drawer, They just dont pull out. Theres usually a part you press to let the drawer come out. Then you can put in in the sink and give it a good scrub. I would say the drawer compartment will need a good cleaning to. I think you'll find lots of gunge in there.
But get a box of the Calgon sounds like your machine needs it. Its good stuff. and I would say your wash will be a lot fresher.

Sorry Kate meant to say. When you get the CALGON. put a good half cup full in the drawer and put your machine on hot wash with nothing else in it. The Calgon will do a good cleaning job.

Kate if you have white vinegar put a cup of that in the drum and put the machine on. The vinegar will clean it also.

If your machine drawer doesn't pull out (mine doesn't) it's harder to clean, but you can do it , I clean mine out every week, it doesn't get clogged up so easily then. It's easier if you have small hands though, or long fingers - which I don't! Big Grin

I use an old toothbrush to get into the corners of the drawer

Something which comes to my mind is something which my washing Machine engineer told me about !
Put a hulf cup of Soda Crystals in the wash, That should work.... Calgon is bloomin pricy and apparently the Soda Crystals do the same Job! Good Luck!

It's doing low temperature washes with liquid detergent that causes a grey gunge that builds up round the seal and a whiffy drum.

Once a month do a really hot boil wash (with an empty machine if necessary) using Arial powder or you could using soda crystals.

I only ever tried doing a boil wash once, the kitchen looked like a sauna, is that much steam supposed to come out?! And it kept setting the smoke alarm off even though it was definitely steam & not smoke. Roll Eyes
