I was claening out the cupboard in my room, which has been innaccesible since i moved in due to damage to the door lock. After a job with the crowbar I managed to open it to reveal retro wallpapers and christmas decorations. I cleared this out in my hope to turn it into a loveley little goroove shack, I bought the paint and everything to do it up great.

But when I climbed into it after the junk was disposed of. I inspected the wallas and noticed some hairline cracks, I followed one of the cracks to find a dim green stain on the wall, when I followed the stain it lead to a massive layer of mould growing on the wall!!!

I dont know what happned but I think the green liquid was responsibe and I dont know what it could have been. The smell was awful, so I just ran out (Given my massive fear of mould!!!) and shut the door. I got a can of lavender airspray and sprayed the whole can into the cupboard. Its still these and Im too afraid to open my cupboard door.

Can someone suggest a safe way to get rid of it and what precations I need to take. Im scared in case I spread the mould by scrubbing it. Confused

Leave the door open to let light & air get in, mould doesn't like that, and spray with a mould fungicide, any will do but Morrisons os good apparently. Big Grini It does keep returning though, but you can keep it under control. You could also re-plaster or re-wallpaper with plaster/paper containing anti-fungal ingredients.

and a dehumidifier type device would help. you can get electric ones and ones that have a gel type substance to absorb the moisture, which is probably contributing to the mould. somewhere like b and q or homebase would probably have something at a reasonable price

bowl of silica helps - doesn't really cost more than a few pennies and does the job just as well as shop-bought dehumids - and air it out properly, maybe even put a radiator in front of it and dry it out completely

Open up the cracks in the wall, Get to the root of the problem, Then a good scrubbing, plenty of air and light. When your sure the problem is solved re-plaster.

PS. It might sound drastic opening up the cracks, but even in a new build, some cracks in the wall are opened for re-plastering.
