Hi

This is obviously not strictly cleaning related but with the wealth of knowledge in here someone might know the answer.

Whenever I have a shower my shower curtain seems intent on making love to me. The bloody thing seems to move inwards and try to attach itself to me whilst I am showering away. I cannot tell you how really annoying this is.

I have eliminated the obvious causes. Tried with the extractor fan on and off. Tried the bathroom door open and closed. Tried a draft excluder along the bottom of the bathroom door. All to no avail.

Has anybody any ideas what is going on and how I can have a shower in peace with the shower curtain hanging straight down and not trying to wrap itself around me. Now if it was Matt Damon fair enought - but its just a plastic shower curtian. HELP :-)

Mike

I've seen a solution to this problem in a book somewhere, unfortunately can't remember where, sorry. You could try weighting the bottom of the shower curtain down, or get one of those shower screens instead, not much help really,

I find that usually happens if I have the window wide open as the window is directly opposite the shower cubicle. If I have the window just slightly open then the shower curtain doesn't drift towards me! Ninja Big Grin

Thanks fatbird and janni for your replies I will try those.

If anyone else has an idea please say so.

Interesting to hear that its such a recognised problem that it appears in a book.

Bet Sandman is feeling a bit of a prick now :-)

Sure thats not a problem at all. All you need is a couple of thousand pounds. Have a real walk in shower installed. Shower curtains, so out dated darling. Theres just one hitch, you really need to spend a few hundred thousand more, and buy a home with a bathroom to put it in. Or you could ask mummy when you get home from school. There, there be a nice little girl/boy.Ask mummy nicely. No more nasty shower curtain spoiling diddums fun.

Fitboy, no offfence, but is it a cheapish shower curtain? I haven't got a shower at home but I know that when I've been in hotels abroad some of their shower curtains do the same thing, and seems to be the flimsier type of curtain that does it. I could be wrong as I think Janni said hers does it too if the window is fully open, but a thicker curtain may help.

Our shower curtain is quite old but it is thick, more like linen/cotton than plastic. It also has two weights at the bottom of it. However it does still blow inwards into the shower cubicle if the window opposite is wide open. It's only a small window and just the top section of it opens, but we always keep it open so that the shower room doesn't get so steamed up.

Oh well, my idea's no good then! Thanks for that anyway Janni, at least if Fitboy gets a thicker curtain it might not be so clingy. Wink

Yes I know what you mean FB. I've been in hotels where the shower curtain is thin and very clingy! Our shower curtain here at home sort of drifts into the shower cubicle and gets in the way when the window is fully open, but it doesn't really cling! Big Grin

FB I said in my post above that our shower curtain is more like linen/cotton than plastic. Having given it a wash today I checked the label and it is in fact 75%polyester and 25%cotton.

Well, polyester is quite clingy isn't it? I know Mr FB's mam used to complain about their shower curtain doing the same thing, in the end they got a shower screen instead. I think a lot of hotels get their shower curtains from the local pound shops Big Grin

FB when I was hanging our shower curtain back up after washing it yesterday, I thought it is time it was replaced - it's getting a bit stiff and discoloured each end of the bottom hem where the weights are, though there's no sign of any mould on it. It has lasted a long time and I haven't needed to replace it before, especially as it was an expensive one compared to the shower curtains we had bought previously. After this conversation on here I shall have to look carefully at what materials they are made of before buying another one! Big Grin

I bought a shower curtain from @sd@ (not sure if I can type that!) and it was a bargain at about £5, It is plastic but good quality, just as good as ones I have paid about £20 for before. Got it last October and is lasting really well. No clinginess at all!

That could be your answer fitboy, get down to Asda & get a new curtain!
Janni, your curtain has done you proud, time for it to retire now, hope your next one is as long-lasting (& un-clingy!) Big Grin

Hi

Thanks for all your further posts (with the exception of Sandrina - My God there a lot of people on this site getting there personality disorders out for the lads :-) )

Being quite a little professor at heart I think I will try weighting the curtain down next.

It was cheapish 10 quid or so from Argos but its still got some use left in it so Ill go for the weights option. Will be fun working out how to attache them.

Can you sew? Open the hem at the bottom of the curtain, attach the weights inside & sew back up, that seems the easiest answer, depending on what you're going to use for weights.

The weights in our shower curtain which were already in the hem when we bought it look like oval-shaped coins. There are only 2 (1 at each end of the hem) - it would probably be better if there were a few more placed along the rest of the hem.
After I had washed the shower curtain the other day the material felt a lot softer than it did before washing, and I noticed that it did drift into the shower cubicle a bit at first even with the window only slightly open. I wash it quite frequently so that could be when I've sometimes noticed it drift in and get in the way before.

We've got a new shower curtain now which is 100% polyester. It is thick and it is not clingy! Big Grin It has a weighted hem which is a sort of narrow rolled hem - it feels as though it has some sort of cord running through it.

That sounds good Janni, maybe the shower curtain manufacturers have been designing them to stop them clinging now. Wonder if fitboy ever got his to stop clinging? Confused Big Grin

Do you have a powerful shower? It could be that the force of the stream of water creates a 'draught' which pulls the curtain inwards (can't really explain it scientifically!)

You could always replace with a shower screen - more modern.

If your shower is in the tub, and the tub is made of cast iron, you can try using magnets to keep the bottom of the shower curtain pulled tight against the tub. I have had this problem in the past but my tub is made of fibreglass. My solution to the problem was to buy two fabric shower curtains. Hang one on the outside of the tub (for Decoration) and {on the same hooks} hang the other shower curtain on the inside of the tub. the fabric will absorb some of the water and keep the curtain heavy and the two curtains hung together will stop them, from blowing in either direction in or out of the tub. Good Luck!
