Since moving in to our house earlier this year I have read the label of every cleaning product on the supermarket shelf. They all say not suitable for gold plated taps. Our bathroom taps are coated in limescale and yuckiness and I just use bleach and water which keeps them hygienic but isn't getting rid of the main problem and I know that the taps will just become grey metal because the plate will go.
There doesn't seem to be anything really effective for gold-plated taps, the only safe thing is warm soapy water. I think your best bet is to change them for chrome!
