Bit of a soot fall and most went on the dust sheet but a stray bit got onto the carpet. Have vacuumed but there is still a stain.

Instinct is to get a wet cloth and scrub but would that the totally wrong thing to do?

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Yes, don't get soot damp. You can try sprinkling salt, leave at least 2 hours then hoover - use the fine nozzle on your hoover if it has one as using it the normal way might just spread the soot. Hope that works for you. You can try using a stain remover after hoovering too.
