Hi there. I was wondering if one of you can help me. I'm having a problem with wasps. They are coming in through the air vent in the kitchen and usually there is about half a dozen every time I go in there. The strange thing is they just hover round the window mostly and then die. Is it normal for wasps to come indoors when they are dying off? I've not had a problem with them before. I've been told not to block the vent as they'd turn it into a nest, also i've tried lighting candles as they are not supposed to like smoke but it isn't bothering them. Any help would be much appreciated as I'm afraid to go in there in case I'm attacked and the kitchen looks a right mess with the dead wasps all over.

Ugh wasps!! Hate the things. If I was you I would contact either the local council pest control or a pest control company to get some advice.

DEz wasps can be dangerous. I'm getting so many come into my bathroom, Must be a nest out there. But i dont know where. You must have a nest near by to get so many. You wont solve the problem untill you find out were , then get them to come out and smoke it, but you'll pay for it. In my last house i was cleaning the outside of the kitchen window and heard the droning, thought at first it was a plane. Then looked up and there was dozens of them, flying in and out of the back door porch roof. I phoned the env. health , they told me to stay inside, close all the doors and windows and in no way provoke them as they would attack me. They came out and smoked the nest, But couldn't remove it as it was inside the roof. but they said i would have no more trouble. The thing with wasps is they can sting repeatedly, whereas a bee stings once and dies. It would be worth having a look around outside, try and see were there coming from, then that is were the nest will be.

DEz I have a feeling the nest is already in the air vent. If so you would be wise to have it seen to. Have a look at the air vent from outside, see if many are flying in and out of it, If so then theres your nest. Thats not good to much a part of your house.

It would be my worst nightmare having a wasps nest. Recently my sister found a HUGE one in her loft, she has lived there for a couple of years but had never looked up in there. It was MASSIVE, must've been about 3 x 2 feet, LUCKILY when pest control came out they said it was an old nest. Sends shivers down my spine at the thought of it.

PS, i think they would close of the air vent from inside, then smoke it. They could then remove the outside of the air vent and remove the nest. You should get it seen to.

True Natnee they come in all sizes, but if Dez is lucky this might be a new nest just started so would be still small.

Sorry Dez, don't mean to scare you wil stories of giant nests. I'm sure if there is one in the air vent it won't be big, if one at all. Get it checked out asap!

I haven't seen many wasps this year. I had a nest in the attic a few years ago, could see them coming and going from outside but they didn't bother me so I didn't bother them! I like to live and let live where poss.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I checked the air vent today and it is clear. There are woods just a couple of yards away from my house so the nest is probably there. I'm not really wanting to have the nest destroyed as they seen to be dying anyway but I want them to stop coming in the house to die. Could you recommend something that would deter them? Thanks

My mother has had an awful problem with flies appearing in the kitchen even though windows etc are closed. One day she had 40! Can't work out what the problem is, there's no strange smells (I said maybe there was a dead rodent under the floor or something - she got a bit annoyed as if I was casting aspersions on her cleanliness.)

We've had a few flies this week too - stupid things, they fly in through a wide open door but can't get back out the same way Roll Eyes
Dez, have you got anything sweet in your kitchen that maybe the wasps are attracted to? Or any flowers on your windowsill? Those door curtainns are supposed to work at keeping insects out, you could only get the bright stripy ones once but now there's a range of them
