My cousin is having an aweful time with squirrels. She keeps her compost pail on her deck and they won't stay out of it. It is plastic and they have chewed large holes in it to get at the food. She bought a new container (also plastic) and they chewed through that one as well. Is there any wonderful trick to keep them from chewing the plastic and staying out of her compost?
Sprinkle the area with pepper cayenne pepper or chilli powder. It makes the squirrels sneeze and irritates them. It also dicourages cates but does no harm to birds. I've been sprinkling chill pepper over the birdseed on my bird table. The birds aren't bothered but it does work against squirrels if you repaeat regularly, particularly after rain.
