Ok. I am aware that I am about to sound really silly, but I could do with some help.

I'm now at uni, and share a flat, and a kettle between 7.

We noticed today in the kettle little bits of silvery/gray gunk floating in the water.

It's also over this metal type thing in the bottom of the kettle (told you I'd sound silly) and so we think it is coming from that.

If anyone has any advice, what to do with it, how to clean or stop it, that would be fantastic.

Thanks.

Do you live in a hard water area? If so, it probably needs de-scaling, you can buy stuff to do it or else fill the kettle with half water and half white vinegar. Leave overnight, pour out contents, wipe round with kitchen paper (including inside of spout), refill with clean water and boil. If it's very bad it may need more than one application.

CQ forever!

Where do you live? Most areas in the South are hard water - if you find it difficult getting a lather when using soap thats a hard water area.

It's limescale. The hot water and vinegar should work (according to HCIYH!)

Also, I wanted to let you know that there is a product you can buy that will help you avoid limescale buildup. It's a little metal wire ball, and you pop it in your kettle, and keep it there always unless it needs replacing. The limescale collects on the wire ball, and not on the inside of your kettle.

If you have a store called Stokes, they sell it... If not, you probably need to go to a kitchen ware store and ask for it.

Lakeland do them too, or you can get them from shops like Wilkinsons, Home Bargains, and most supermarkets too. Good luck Wink
