So FilmFour showed Princess Mononoke twice recently, on 5th of Aug and then again last night.
I'm quite disappointed that *both* times the English dubbed version has been aired. I understand the 1st time it was during the afternoon - so it's much more accessible for kids to see this classic in a non-subtitled version... But at 11.20 at night?? Surely at that time slot an original language version could be honoured. I'm sure if this weren't an animated film, the channel wouldn't only be satisfied with the dubbed version of a foreign film.
It has been said "We're lucky to be able to even get hold of original versions!" - but I think with these Ghibli films that can't really be the case, as last year when Film4 went Freeview in the 1st week the dubbed versions were shown, then in the 2nd, the subtitled original versions. (Though unfortunately, although there was a lot of press coverage for the 'going free', no mention was made in listings (even in the official pamphlet put out by Film4) of this crucial difference. So those interested enough were unaware they could wait a week for the proper versions.)
That's disappointing to hear. I was very pleased that Film4 showed both dubbed and subtitled versions of every Ghibli film they showed giving everyone a choice.
I hope Film4 show the subtitled version of Laputa:Castle in the sky again soon, As its the only one I missed last august as my dish hadn't been installed yet.
I would also like to see princess monokoe in its original form as it adds a certain something to it. And you are right rogershoes it is pretty violent I was supprised at the rating it was given when it came out on dvd, i think it was a pg when I watched it I thouught that it should be slightly higher.
Like a fat a guy at an all you can eat buffet life got in my way.
