It's possible the Beeb screened a cropped/altered version on BBC2 whilst simultaneously broadcasting a 2.35:1 print on its HD service. It's happened before, most notably at Christmas - THE GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL are two titles which immediately spring to mind. If I'm right in assuming that TV companies must pay different fees for different versions (cropped and uncropped), this amounts to a lot of money which some companies may not want to pay over the long haul. Hence the possible reason for the recent Indiana Jones 'experiment' on BBC3, gauging audience reaction for a gradual switch-over to OAR on all channels. Needless to say, the sky doesn't seem to have fallen on C4 since they switched to OAR...

Dunno about anyone else, but I'm certainly looking forward to the CinemaScope shocker THE FLY next week (not the Cronenberg film, which is also getting an airing), along with THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO, which I haven't seen at the original Techniscope dimensions for years. Hopefully, Film 4 has also managed to secure a 2.35:1 version of TIMELINE, though even if they have, this 12-rated actioner has been scheduled in an early-evening slot yet again, subject to possible cuts.
Oh, and watch out for More 4's hilariously squeezed 1.78:1 version of DEATH DRUMS ALONG THE RIVER, which I've mentioned here many times before, and yet is still being screened in a patently faulty print. Unless, of course, C4 has sprung for a corrected version this time around.
It's too much to hope that EL CID will be screened on BBC4 in all its Super Technirama 70 glory, so I won't bother hoping at all...

Given the vast array of glorious 'scope movies on display across the C4 spectrum last week (19-25 Apr), it behooves me to complain that they still haven't secured 2.35:1 versions of either STAR TREK: NEMESIS and MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN. However, they did manage to secure a 2.55:1 print of 20000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, which was a revelation in terms of how the frame was consistently balanced from one scene to the next, in a way that's totally lost when you view it at any other ratio. In fact, there were plenty of 'old school' titles getting their first taste of widescreen glory on terrestrial channels (COMANCHE STATION and THE BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA, to name but two). Excellent stuff!
JASON X was still misframed at around 2.20:1, rather than the original 1.85:1.
THE LONG SHIPS was also framed at around 2.20:1 for the first time, which tallies with the intended theatrical ratio - but only if Film 4's print was derived from 70mm elements. If their version was derived from 35mm elements, then it should have been framed at 2.35:1.
Oh, and neither DAREDEVIL or THE VISITORS was framed correctly on BBC's 3 and 4 last week, as hoped. In fact, THE VISITORS was screened at 1.33:1, totally ruining the entire presentation beyond all hope of retrieval...
Anyway, last week's widescreen epiphanies on C4 and co.:

Why on earth is Film 4 suddenly screening a cropped 1.78:1 version of THE CORE, I wonder? They've been broadcasting the full 2.35:1 version across the range of C4 channels for months now, and it's suddenly turned up on Film 4 in a compromised print.
Any of the mods care to enlighten us?

Indy Jones trilogy starting on BBC1 on Sunday nights from this Sunday at 8.05pm. Be interesting to see what ratio they turn up in, although the trailers were cropped to 16:9.

Despite being screened correctly on BBC3 recently, there's absolutely no chance RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK will make it to BBC1 next week in anything other than cropped 1.78:1 format, which is a shame. Still, DRACULA 2000 is scheduled for broadcast on BBC3, and they might show that one at the original ratio. Then again, they might not...
Oh, and hats off to ITV2 for unearthing a rare gem, a film whose obscurity meant they were forced to blow clouds of dust and cobwebs from the crumbling negative. Indeed, the film is SO rare, I'm told ITV executives held a top-level meeting recently, to ask themselves if the public was actually prepared for such a cinematic marvel. But since it's been screened so infrequently in the past few days... er, I mean, weeks (doesn't sound any better), I think we'll all just about survive the onbslaught. Yes, they've wheeled out DIE HARD. Again.

No, I don't know what an 'onbslaught' is, either... All I can say about the lack of an editing button is: Knickers!

DOCTOR AT LARGE was screened at 1.33:1 on More4 last week (26 Apr-2May), though it may not have been cropped at all. When Paramount Pictures developed the VistaVision process, they intended for most VV films to be screened at 1.85:1 (they could also be screened at lesser ratios such as 1.37 or 1.66, but 1.85 was the 'optimum'). However, DAL wasn't produced by Paramount and didn't seem especially cropped or altered to any significant degree, so the film might have been composed for 1.37:1, even when presented in 8-perf VistaVision (if it ever was, which is another topic altogether!).
I suspect THE CORE was screened at 1.78:1 this week (twice!!) because it was the edited pre-watershed version and - for whatever reason - Film 4 was unwilling (or unable) to make cuts to the original 2.35:1 print. Same goes for TIMELINE, also screened at 1.78:1 (again) last week in an inappropriate - and possibly edited - pre-watershed slot. Given that the mods have so far ignored my enquiries on this issue (ask 'em about a song on one of their trailers, though, and you'll have a response within hours), we can only speculate as to the reason.
Still, there was plenty of other stuff to keep us entertained in recent days. As expected, the 1958 version of THE FLY was absolutely magnificent in CinemaScope!!
Last week's widescreen triumphs:
2046 20000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA THE ABYSS AVP: ALIEN VS. The BBC must only have one 'widescreen' version of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and that'll be the 2.35:1 version prepared for HD broadcasts. This may explain why they chose to run an ancient, unwatchable 1.33:1 version of the film on BBC1 last night (5 May). Rather that, they thought, than run the thing at 2.35:1 on a primary channel. Not that such practices have done C4 any harm in recent months. There again, no one ever said the BBC was governed by logic...
More than likely, we can expect the same treatment for the upcoming sequels.

ITV 2 ran the terrible TV version of Beverly Hills Cop at lunchtime today, utterly pointless.
Channel 4 also chose afternoon for their screening of Escape to Victory, cropped to 16:9. I'm 99% certain that the arm-breaking scene was slightly edited, been years since I saw it but I'm sure the impact was depicted in the full version - this one just showed the set-up, then mysteriously and noiselessly, the unfortunate chap was sobbing.

Couldn't agree more. I cringe to think of anyone watching this version and thinking they've 'seen' the film. Imagine a nun watching it, enjoying it immensely, and then popping out to buy the DVD! What a shock she's going to have!!... quote: Channel 4 also chose afternoon for their screening of Escape to Victory, cropped to 16:9. I haven't seen the film, but it sounds edited to me. Of course, ask the mods for an explanation, and you get... a rather rude silence. I'm still waiting for an answer to my enquiry about THE CORE...

Welcome back to old, er... 'favourites' CLIFFHANGER and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL next week. Along with DIE HARD and the Bourne series, these win my vote for Serious TV Filler of the Millennium, for which TV execs should feel thoroughly ashamed. These titles may not be on our screens every week, but they're scheduled so frequently that it feels like digital viewers are having the same old stuff foisted upon them, week in and week out.
What makes it worse is that CLIFFHANGER is not only cropped to 1.78:1 (it does look spectacular at 2.35:1, especially when viewed on the Big W-i-d-e screen), it's also the same censored version we've been forced to endure since the distributors opted to cut the film for a 15 certificate back in 1993 (the same print made it to home video, where it's festered ever since). Violence, language and 'racial epithets' were sacrificed, though all of this would be restored if the rights-holders resubmitted the film and asked for an 18.
Film 4 is screening HERO in HD format, and 'twill be interesting to see if it's striped across the CENTRE OF THE SCREEN WHERE IT BELONGS, or if they somehow manage to ruin the entire presentation by shoving it against the top of the 16:9 frame. I've avoided it so far for this very reason...

One last thing: Channel 4 is screening an edited version of the documentary feature JESUS CAMP tonight (6 May). Originally 87 minutes long, it's been cut down to a 60 minute slot. With adverts, this means the film will now run about 50 minutes.
I posted a thread about this at the C4 forums but - waddya know?! - several days have passed, and no one from C4 has bothered to respond. I'm beginning to think these forums are nothing more than a one-way street, with no chance of serious questions being answered for any reason.

The original Japanese version of LITTLE NORSE PRINCE was screened in the middle of the night on Film 4 last week (3-9 May), framed around 2.20:1 - not quite the full enchilada (why?!), but just enough to scrape past as a 'legitimate' presentation.
Aside from the issue of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK being screened on BBC1 cropped to 1.33:1 (see my earlier posting), the only other significant issue was the amount of older titles screened across the various C4 stations which were cropped and cramped to an unhelpful degree. And the less said about the anorexic DEATH DRUMS ALONG THE RIVER, the better...
Over on the Channel 4 forums, a helpful moderator explained that JESUS CAMP had been cut to fit a 60-minute slot for 'scheduling reasons', but C4 hopes to screen the full version on More4 in due course. Commentators across the Net have noted that C4's version removed all footage in which various people (including religious figures) expressed outrage at the camp in question, skewing the narrative's political dimension in a way that wasn't intended by the filmmakers. The camp and its founders are condemned out of their own mouths, of course, but the edits have the (unintentional?) effect of making it seem like the subject under attack was Christianity as a whole, whereas the original version made it clear the only thing under scrutiny was fundamentalist Christianity in its most aberrant form. I've deleted this from DVR, unseen. 'Scheduling reasons' seems like such a feeble excuse for this kind of jiggery-pokery. Why not screen it in More4's True Stories strand?
Anyway, last week's widescreen whoppers:
CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES THE COOLER DAYS OF THUNDER THE FIFTH ELEMENT FORREST GUMP HOSTAGE (C4) KINGDOM OF HEAVEN K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER (More4) LITTLE NORSE PRINCE MY FIRST MISTER (C4) RIVER OF NO RETURN THE SHAPE OF THINGS (C4) THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL (E4) TAXI THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO THE VIKINGS

Rather small, actually - certainly smaller than the GARGANTUAN ones C4 generates for the transfers they prepare themselves (I'm assuming the HD version of HERO was bought 'as is', small subs and all). Oh, and just as I suspected, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM was cropped to 1.33:1 on BBC1. In this day and age, totally unacceptable...

K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER is scheduled for pre-watershed broadcast on Film 4 next week (edits ahoy!), and if it's cropped to 1.78:1, that'll go a long way towards confirming my suspicion that edited versions are cropped, while the full 2.35:1 prints are screened uncut at an appropriate time. Naturally, if there are any cuts, there'll be no mention of them prior to the broadcast...
In the same vein, interested viewers might like to know ITV2 is screening an uncut version of IN THE LINE OF FIRE for the first time in the UK, containing material edited from the film and video version for a 15 certificate. These stupid cuts, instigated by James Ferman's regime at the BBFC (more interested in finding something to justify their existence than playing fair with distributors and consumers), would probably be reinstated for DVD - with a 15 certificate - if submitted today. ITV2's version will doubtless be cropped, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
Oh, and the Radio Times lists INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE as being in HD, though I'm assuming 'regular' terrestrial/Freeview viewers will get a cropped 1.33:1 version, while BBC HD viewers (both of them!) will see it in glorious 2.35:1. However, if it goes out on BBC1 in its complete scope glory, I may very well poop my pants...
