Looks like I'm going to have to pay more atttention to small details...
When the CinemaScope film CATTLE EMPIRE debuted on Film 4 following the switch to free-to-air, it was severely cropped to 1.33:1. A properly-framed 2.35:1 version premiered on the channel a short while afterward, prompting a great deal of praise in these forums (see the thread '2.35:1 Movies on Film 4 and Freeview'). I just tuned-in to this afternoon's broadcast, and it's been cropped again to 1.78:1!!
Would anyone from Film 4 like to explain just what on earth is going on?
(PS. I would have put this in the aforementioned thread devoted to 2.35:1 films, but I would GENUINELY like an answer to this question, and I don't want it to get 'buried' in an already-lengthy discussion).
Many thanks for your post - there was an error this end and the 2.35:1 version was not transmitted when it should have been - future showings of the film will be in that ratio.
Thanks for your positive response to my enquiry. Good to know this was just an error - for a minute there, I thought the channel was going to slide back into cropped/altered 'widescreen' hell!!
