Actually it was the old style analogue mobiles that were the problem, as they were mostly phased out by 1997 they are not too much of a problem anymore. But it is recommended not to use any mobiles around life support equipment because of the way the digital signal can interrupt electronics. You know the noise your radio or tv make when your mobile is near it? That's the problem - it doesn't stop the equipment from working it just interrupts it briefly.
Walkie talkies on the other hand shouldn't be used because the radio waves do interfere with vital equipment.
