Statham is always referred to as Dr as well.

ok i don't mean to be annoying, but i think the main reason they call Mac "Dr", is cus it's easier to explain to those who maybe don't know about hospitally titles and things...cus it can get confusing. When you become a doctor you do from a miss/ms/mr to Dr. and when you're a surgeon you go from a Dr to a Mr/(Mrs i think). but it's just easier to say Doctor, cus technically he is. hopefully that made sense

He is a doctor because he would be FRCR (fellow of the royal college of radiologists....yes it does exist) and only FRCS gives you the title Mr or Ms

This is way beyond me. If Mr is an important title for someone who had gotten all the right degrees / passed the right exams, then why is it widely used by the public to decribe their status? Surely it should be different and *pure*?

Doctorguy it's a honorary title going back to the days when barbers used to perform minor surgery. It also explains the origin of the red and white sign comes from that traditionally sits outside a barber shop. I think it's particular to British surgeons and not other medical professions or indeed those from other countries. Although surgeons from other countries "earn" the title on passing their FRCS I think it does complicate the plot unnecessarily as I have said before but I just like to see accuracy. I've worked with surgeons and medics all my career and they work blooming hard for their money. They should have their status recognised. Nothing goes through me more than one of my colleagues being referred to as Dr when they are, in fact, Mr/ Ms

Wait! that doesn't even make sense. Long day or what? It should read it also explains the origin of the red and white sign that sits outside a barbers shop. I should see myself after class for that one

I asked why the title is used by the public, not how it originated.

Sorry I don't understand what you mean then? Why shouldn't it be used by the public??

I mean, whats the different between the Mr used by the general public to describe themselves, and someone who has all these degrees? Surely theres a difference. Why are the public allowed to use Mr, and not just these people who have the degrees?

in the olden days, even though barbers did surgical operations, they werent qualified doctors, so they couldnt take the title dr. THe title mr was because they were members of the general public. Nowadays surgeons use the title Mr because its tradition. its just something we accept as the norm. not sure if that makes much sense... please don't blame me, i'm new.

Vaguely off-topic but in relation to mr/dr. In s1, ep6 when Sue Whites talking dirty to Guy, she says something along the lines of "Not Dr, but Mr. One above Dr. Mr Secretan. How do you like that, eh?" Or something. Sorry, dunno why I posted that or how relevant it is. Just trying to be involved!
"What did you do?" "Your mum, and then I ate her."
