Me too! I've got a wet patch. Phew, the clip is officially up...A little bit later than we had at first promised (we're sorry!) but we think it's been worth the wait. What do you think of it? Do you like it? Do you hate it? What would you have done differently? Hell, why not just make your own version and send it to us?
Thank you, I gave it a blast under the hand dryer so it's just my chair I have to worry about now.
Of course you are the expert, it is you we are trying to please. Thanks for your comments, I'm storing them away in a special 4Laughs place in my heart (and on a spreadsheet).
A wee while ago, I asked the below question... "Which is generally considered better: A great idea for a sketch that may not be so easy to follow through (ie. the synopsis/premise is possibly funnier than the sketch itself) or a great sketch that may not be easily described or explained in 160 characters?" ...and got no reply. Now I think this sketch has answered my question. It was a great premise that didn't deliver as well as perhaps I was hoping it would (although that could be put down to knowing what the payoff was before watching the sketch). I dont want to appear negative, just honest.
All the C4 winplayer don't work for cool people who have macs. can you give a URL of the video so i can play it with through Window Media Player on my mac.
"Dying's the easy way out. You won't catch me dying. They'll have to kill me before I die! " Yellowbeard
You didn't really expand on the idea much, did you 4laughs? I think Yapolitical has a point with what he said about a punchy 160 character description can turn into a dissapointing sketch, and harder to describe ideas might have more content in the long run. I would rather see a dodgy description and a great sketch than the other way around.
I was expecting more from you 4laughs. I really was...
Writing comedy is like taking a dump.
Don't force it or you might end up with something that isn't very funny at all...
We welcome all your comments, so don't worry if you didn't like the clip - just let us know why! And feel very free to make your own version, we'd love to see what you would have done differently...
Clancho, I'm afraid you and your Mac are so darn cool that you can't see the clip! It's a travesty I know, but unfortunately the C4 player streams the vid through a WMP version that Macs don't use. Do you think a friendly PC user might let you see it on their's? Sorry about that.
Keep your comments coming, I'll put some of them in the blog and all of them in the mighty comment spreadsheet
Quick question, Does the winning writer get to expand on their idea or does your in-house writer do all the hard-yards? The thing is, some of the ideas I've had have a particular writing style in mind and chances are it will be developed totally different by Jim. I'm happy either way, I'm just curious to know.
Somewhat juvenile then Channel 4. Well ok then, very juvenile.
I take it that you exactly picked the limit of 160 characters, so that you can persuade the gullible Great British public to send these ideas in (at a later date) by SMS, else why the 160 limit? A decent concept designer should be encouraged to expand upto 500 characters max.
So what is the next C4 project? To get us flicking bits of paper around the room using our rulers?
thats possible about the 160 characters or it could also be that they are trying to challenge us to fit in our general idea in as few words as possible
Nintendo are helping to make Send-a-Sketch possible by sponsoring the site, they are not dictating how you create your comedy.
Send-a-Sketch is the first of a spectrum of competitions that 4Laughs will be hosting when we launch in our entirety later this year. It's all about pitching a idea cleverly and is a great way to showcase new talent in a manageable, bite size form, something which Baby Cow have wholly embraced. Later this year, we'll also be inviting your scripting, storyboarding and development skills - and in fact what ever you are most interested in.
Oh Dear, I've just watched the new clip, " New pet" ...... IS THAT SUPOSED TO BE FUNNY? if so can anyone tell me why? just like the "pigleg" sketch there was no jokes or punchlines what so ever, you could of at least given a little bit of comedy dialogue to both the parents before the child enters and the child after she see's her new pet. The "pet" should defo be inside an hamster ball and the end should be a refuseal to except the situation , by the child and this results in her kicking the hamster ball down the stairs, that at least adds a bit of slap stick to a very dull sketch!
I'm thinking about giving up the send-a-sketch comp. I've only been entering it for one week and I have a feeling that it's going to leave me with a sense of anger and frustration if I carry on with it.
What happens to the sketches that don't get made into clips? Does 4laughs have the rights to them? I bet there's a big stockpile of our ideas ready to be made into a cheap show that would be proud not to have budget for writers.
Please get the part of the site up and running so we have somewhere to show our finished sketches.
The more I think about it the less I like this site...
Writing comedy is like taking a dump.

We'll be encouraging everyone who has entered a great idea to develop it themselves for the main site. 4Laughs is not about stealing your ideas, just giving you a forum to showcase and develop your work for like-minded people and those who have already made it in the comedy industry.
What a profound disappointment. It just goes to show that a good sketch premise will die on its arse if the execution is poor. If this is to be the quality of the writing, then I fear none of the good ideas suggested will amount to anything. Perhaps 4Laughs needs to consider allowing the some input in the writing stage as well....
