Well I was a bit underwhelmed by the actual end to the Beth and Rhys storyline. Usually im a merchant of sad ends however I can't accept this one for my favourite two characters. Its not in chronolgical order so pay attention....


Beth And Rhys

Gilly opened his eyes, he could not differentiate between the swirling colours that were upon him. He could almost make out the shape of something, something in between the blur of white and black. He turned and sat up, hoping to shake off this feeling of disorientation and eventually he did. He looked at his arm, littered with cuts and bruises and it all came back to him, like a headache he had had the previous night. He turned to the right and saw Suzanne, watching him, not wanting to rush anything. She started to speak.......

Rhys and Beth had been travelling for fifteen minutes, the small country lanes were making Rhys nervous but he was with Beth, everything was fine, everything was going to be fine. She turned to catch his eye and he slowly moved to meet her eyes. They smiled, a pure smile, one of relief. After all these months of secrecy and pain it would all be alright. His family didn’t matter anymore, he still felt for Gilly, almost wished he could have come, in different circumstances he might have. Beth spoke for the first time:
“I’m sorry Rhys”
“Sorry for what”,
“I never wanted any of this; I’ve hurt so many people, your best friend, your family...”
Rhys interjected “We both have, but this is it now, this is it. I love you”
Beth smiled again. Rhys turned once again to Beth as the caravan met with the truck....

It had been a week since they had been found out, everything was starting to calm down in the Ashworth household, Beth and Rhys, forced to evacuate the house after the situation became too uncomfortable for them to bare, were obviously unaware of this. Even if they had been they wouldn’t have dared go back. Gilly, as he had done the past week, sat blankly at the table whilst the rest, with eyes down would munch their breakfasts. The Ashworths, for now at least, didn’t enjoy the company of their siblings, parents, or children, it was just too hard to avoid the conversation arriving at Beth and Rhys, and no one wanted that. Gilly got up, no one stopped him, no one asked if he was alright anymore, they already knew. He set off out the backdoor to take a walk round the village.

When he reached the SU bar he stopped, remembering how his life had been perfect just weeks before. He thought of when Beth agreed to marry him in the exact same place he was standing now. He realised how sick that picture looked now, how she had agreed to marry him, with Rhys standing there, the one she really loved. It was almost as if she was marrying him at that moment. Hannah came and sat on the wall next to him. Gilly put his arm round her. “oh Hannah, you don’t deserve all this”. She didn’t reply, her silence was comforting enough for Gilly. They sat there for an hour, in total silence; no one could muster a sentence. They didn’t have to, both were the most comfortable they had been all week.

The silence was broken when Hannah realised she had lectures. She walked towards the park; no one would bother her in the park. However, Rhys had had the same idea and Hannah could see him from the other side, sitting on a bench. She didn’t go back, for once, she wanted to see him. She could say all she wanted about Rhys, she loved him. He needed some comfort too. Rhys was surprised when she approached him and actually sat down beside him. “Why did you sit here?” said Rhys, “You know why Rhys, I’m still your sister, now I don’t care that Beth’s your sister, I only care about what you’ve done to Gilly”, Rhys didn’t respond for a while he was still in disbelief that she had actually talked to him. “I told you, I knew Beth before all of this, before she was my sister” he paused “Gilly wasn’t involved then, but we stopped, we stopped cos we knew we could never be together” Hannah turned to him “What happened?” Rhys continued “It hurt too much Han’ I couldn’t forget her, I love her, I can’t bear to be apart again, I won’t”. Hannah actually felt for him, it was hard for him as well, no one had realised that. She hugged him. “Thanks Han”.

Rhys returned to the Halls, where they had taken up residence of late, a few minutes later. Beth was still lying in bed, it was the only thing she could do really with their new place consisting of a bed and another room. He left her to sleep and took the paper from the side, sat down and began to read. From behind Beth tenderly touched his shoulders, it was always a relief to have her close again, it reminded him that this wasn’t a nightmare. “Where have you been” she said sweetly. He stood up, oh just for a walk, saw Han. “Your sister?” Rhys nodded, “what did she want?” “Oh nothing” Rhys replied, “she don’t seem mad with us anymore though, maybe finally people are starting to realise how hard this is for us eh?” “maybe” she replied with haste. “Hey you don’t worry yeah” he said as he took her hands, “everything else, i mean ma family, they mean nothing.. your my life now” he paused as he slowly moved in and kissed her “I love you Beth”.

Aaaaannnddd the next bit...

News hadn’t seemed to reach the rest of the village yet, Rhys had forgotten all about Mercedes. He had switched his phone since his family had found out; the rest of the world meant little to him now.
He thought it best not to think about it right now and instead, curled around Beth in their bed, he would stay there forever if he could, why did the world have to be so complicated? Beth was thinking the same; life would have been easier if she hadn’t been cycling that fateful day, but she didn’t want that, her life, both of their lives were void without each other. She would never go back in time and choose not to meet Rhys, she couldn’t if she tried.

Josh was the most vocal of the Ashworth’s during the aftermath of Beth and Rhys leaving. None of which helped the others. There were times when Gilly would clench his fists as he would call them perverts. There was still a big part of him that loved Beth, and Rhys, he was his best friend. Josh always did things in the heat of the moment, most of which he came to regret later. He remembered how absurd and wrong it sounded now that he had accused them of sleeping together, he knew now for once his hasty nature had been for something. Michaela was his friend again; she had promised she wouldn’t be telling anyone, she had kept it, not even telling Mercedes, she didn’t want to ruin another friendship, even for her sister. She entered the Ashworth house, her usual cheery self, but as always her timing was slightly off. “Mornin’ Josh, what ya doin?” there was no reply. “Alright Michaela?” Suzanne asked, “yeah Mrs A how are..” she stopped realising her stupidity. Josh finally responded “Michaela now’s not the time”, “Alright then i’ll be off” and with that she rumbled out of the house, onto Sasha’s doorstep. “Look Josh, Michaelas your..”Suzanne said before being interrupted “I know I just don’t wanna see anyone”. “That’s alright son” Neville said, putting his hand on Josh’s shoulder.

“mmm...” she didn’t continue, she was buzzing with excitement like a little girl. Anywhere would do for Beth and Rhys, anywhere where they could love each other would be fine for them.
“I love you Rhys, i’ll go anywhere you want to go”
She kissed him, and they retired to their bed, it was all they really wanted to do recently.

Josh set off for school, after a few days away he decided he was better out of the house, away from the constant reminders of his brother and his lover. Michaela seemed to jump out from a cave “Hey Josh” she squealed “back at school today then?” “yes Michaela” he said dully. She changed her tone now she had realised he was still deeply upset “look” she continued
“what Michaela?”
“well..”
“yeah?”
“If you want to talk about it, I mean, you can come to me”
“thanks” he said still speaking in that dull voice, he didn’t show it, but he did appreciate that. They walked on together, towards school. Michaela, for once, knew that Josh wasn’t in the mood for talking and it was a quiet uneventful stroll to the school gates. Fletch and Sasha, who had been the good guys of the piece just weeks before, were now becoming the criminals. They were both greeted by dirty looks when Michaela and Josh arrived. “what?” Fletch shouted as if he had no clue, but they were too far. Josh’s problems weren’t all Fletch’s fault but he certainly hadn’t helped, Josh thought he’d never forgive him, he was probably right. Josh finally spoke to Michaela as they were about to enter the common room:
“look Michaela, thanks”
“for what”
“well y’know what you said earlier”
“look, im your friend Josh, tell me anything you want”
“thanks”
They embraced each other and entered the common room, no one took much notice of them and that’s the way Josh hoped it would stay. They sat down.
“Josh?”
“yes?”
“well I was thinking, maybe we could really get serious and start a new band”
“yeah?”
“yeah, we can start afresh and really actually do it this time, you and me”
“alright” Josh squealed excitedly before continuing, “you can come round tonight” “I’d love to!” Michaela proclaimed.

Next bit...
