Leah : Happy birthday babes!

Leah Barnes gives Max a peck on the cheek and hands him a present and card.

Max : Thanks Leah.. Aww babes this is brilliant.

Leah had given him a watch with his name on the back.

Max : Really .. You shouldn't have.

Leah : So what's your plans for today birthday boy.

Max : Family stuff today. Having a meal with mum and dad. And the aunties of course. Tina, Carmel, Mercedes, John Paul , Michaeala. I think John Paul's bringing Craig too.
Then tonight - I was thinking just you and me.

Leah : Sounds great - you eating at Nosh?

Max : Yeah , still got a couple of hours to go.Why don't you come too? Mum won't mind at all.

Leah : Are you sure. I know your mum and my mum , well they're not exactly BFF's are they.

Max : Hey , hey , it's my birthday , I bring who I want babes. If John Paul can bring his girlfriend , why can't I bring mine.

Leah : Girlfriend? Oh Max, that's awful!

Max : Oh , I'm only joking. See you at Nosh at 5. I promised Mum I wouldn't be long. Only came for milk.

Leah : See you later.

As Max walks on he doesn't notice someone lurking at the other end of the street. Watching. Watching him. This was one family member who wasn't invited to the party. Why should he be? Max didn't even know he existed ... yet.

Max : Can Leah come to Nosh with us tonight.

Jacqui's smile drops a little.

Tony : Sure. I think girlfriend qualifies as nearly family. Isn't that right.

Max : Mum?

Jacqui : Mmmh. So , ermm yes , presents! Now or Nosh?

Max : Now please.

Tony : Over there son.

Sitting on the table are Max's presents. He begins opening them & Tony and Jacqui watch on with smiles on their faces.

Jacqui : Our boy. Our beautiful boy.

Tony : Where did the time go.

Max : Thanks Mum. Thanks Dad.

Tony : Yeah , you can wear that cologne tonight. Smell nice for Leah.

Jacqui : Well I'm going to get ready. You two better get a shift on too.

Tony & Max : Yeah , yeah.

A card drops through the letter box.

Max : Dad? Who's Niall?

Tony : What?

Max : This card. It's from some geezer .. Niall?

Max : I've just got a card from someone called Niall. dad doesn't know who it is. Do you?

Tony : It was , ahem, hand delivered Jac.

Jacqui : Niall. No, can't say it rings any bells.

Max : Well he knows who I am. Look, I'm just gonna whack some of that cologne on. Be 2 minutes.

Max leaves the room and Tony & Jacqui exchange nervous glances.

Jacqui : What the hell is Niall playing at. I thought he was gone for good. Why has he popped back up.

Tony I really don't know Jac. Maybe he just wanted to wish Max a happy 18th.

Jacqui : We've never had a card off him before.

Tony : Yeah well 18's special , isn't it.

Max : All ready. Can we go now I'm starving.

Jacqui : Sure. After you.

As the family leave and walk over to Nosh , no-one notices Niall lurking round the corner. Smiling. Waiting...
