As soon as Kris had came out of the room, Elliot’s breathing quickened. Kris rolled his eyes and gave him a push into the room. Zak was sat still, waiting for Kris to come and sit next to her. He looked, if it was possible, more nervous than Elliot.
“What’s up with you?”, Kris asked Zak, smiling a little
“Mate, I’m going be stuck in a room, just me and her! What am I gonna do?!”, Zak said despairingly
“Zak!”
“What? Whatever happens, I’m gonna embarrass myself. I’ll either end up saying something stupid, trying to crack some stupid joke, or I’ll ask her out and she’ll reject me”
“Zak, is it really the time, or the place to ask her out?!”, Kris said incredulously
“I don’t ant to ask her out!”, Zak said alarmingly, “But sometimes me body doesn’t do what I wan’ it to do”
Kris laughed.
“It’s not funny!”, Zak said indignantly
“Zak, just don’t think about her, okay? Think of Jess, of Lucy. . . Of football if you must, just don’t do anything stupid”
“Oh God”, Zak breathed and he stood up and began pacing up and down, rubbing his head as he walked.
Kris just sat back and smiled.
“What happens if she leans near me?”
“Zak, why would she?!”
“Some women have found me to be irresistible Kris”
Kris laughed again.
“I’m sure they have Zak”, Kris said grinning, “I’m just not sure Angela is one of them. Just concentrate on what she’s asking you, okay”
Zak nodded and stopped pacing up and down.
“Seriously Zak, this is important to Jess. Don’t ruin it by upsetting Jess’ only chance of getting Lucy”
Zak sat down, and nodded. He had calmed down now and was sitting relaxed, talking to Kris about Lucy. Unfortunately the same could not be said about Elliot, who was struggling to talk with stammering. As the interview went on however, he got better and was finally able to talk freely.
“Have you ever had ever experience with young children before?”
“Yes”, Elliot said rather confidently, which surprised him, but he liked it so continued to talk. “At home, in Wales, I help to run the Science Camp Boys Club”
Angel smiled. “So you’re often left alone with the children under your responsibility?”
“Yes”
“And they’ve all been fine?”
“Yes”
“Never any accidents”
“Not really no”
“Okay then”, Angela began to write again on her paper, “So you’ve never taught at the girls science camp”
“Oh yes”
“So then why were you so nervous about Lucy?”
“BEcause, I only helped with the teenagers with the girls”
“Right, not litle kids. Why is that? I would have thought you‘d have preferred the younger children”
“I did, but I had the choice of one young group, one older”, Elliot shuddered at the memories he had at trying to teach teenage girls. “I chose the wrong groups”, Elliot said, somewhat quieter. Angela tried hard to not laugh as she too imagined Eliot stuck in a tent with a load of teenage girls, trying to teach them about rockets and so on. She breathed out and smiled politely, before carrying on, the images on Elliot still affecting her.
“Would you ever oppose to being left alone with Lucy?”
Elliot though for a moment before answering. “No, I don’t think so”
“Good. And do you think having her around will disrupt your life or you studies?”
“No. No more than Kris already does”, Elliot said sighing
“Right”, Angela said, a little confused
“Let‘s just say he‘s somewhat more volatile than I am. Short fused”
Angela couldn’t keep her laugh down this time.
“He seemed very polite to me”, She said after recovering from her slight outburst
“Yes, he seems to do that. Put it on when he needs to”
“Right. Lets move on shall we?”
Elliot nodded, happy to stop thinking about Kris.
“Do you think things will have to change to halls if Lucy came to stay?”
“Well yes”
“What things?
“Well”, Elliot took a deep breath and began, “The others have a tendency to opt to play games such as Spin the bottle -”, which Elliot said almost in disgust, “ - Which usually ends up in a argument, or some sort of Truth or Dare game”
Again Angela felt a smile creping on her face.
“And you don’t participate in these games?”
“Not really, no”
“Right”, Angela said smiling, “Anything else that would have to change?”
“Well all the drinking - the beer and wine. It wouldn’t have to go, but maybe toned down a little. And then they wouldn’t be able to go out and get drunk all the time”
“They do this a lot?”
“Not a lot. Well Jess doesn’t because she is always complaining she never has enough money. Kris is partial to a drink or two, as are Zak and Zoe”
“Do you think the others would mind any of these changes?”
“No. It’s for Jess isn’t it? They know how important it is”
The interview carried on for a while, and Kris and Zak waited outside. Zak was counting under his breath. “1 . . 2 . . 3”, followed by a sudden jerked movement from his hands.
“We have reduced ourselves to play, Rock, Paper Scissors”, Zak said after a while
“You have, you mean”
“Now wait here a minute, you was well up for it before”
“Zak, what on earth are you on about?!”
“God how long does he want to be?!”
“Worried Elliot will beat you to it with angela?”, Kris said grinning
“Shut up!”, Zak retorted
Then he paused and looked at the door behind which sat Angela and Elliot
“Yo don’t think -”
“No I don’t. she’s too pretty for Elliot”
“That’s a bit harsh Kris”
“So. . ?”
Zak shrugged his shoulders and left it at that
“So you think she’s pretty then?”
“She’s alright”, Kris said monotonically, in a very uninterested voice
“Too pretty for me?”
Kris didn’t answer straightaway, so Zak asked him again. Kris however, was saved from answering by a flustered Elliot exiting the room. Suddenly Zak got the jitters, realising it was his turn next. . .
This time it was Elliot who pushed Zak in the room. Kris sat back, slightly shocked at Elliot’s actions. Kris however grinned once the door was closed - there was no means of escape now for Zak.
At this point, Lucy who was with Jess and Zoe was now back asleep, still sitting on Jess’ legs, her head resting in the middle of Jess’ chest. Jess had slid across the floor so that her back was rstin against a wall so that she could stay still. She didn’t want to wake Lucy up. Zoe had followed Jess as as sitting next to her, their shoulders touching. Zoe was holding Lucy’s left hand, as Lucy’s thumb on her right hand was once again in her mouth and the rest of her fingers and curled up, her fore finger resting on the bridge of her nose.
As she slept, Lucy often had odd twitching movements in the finger, where she would stroke her nose. This seemed to be a calming effect and it sent her back off to sleep.
“I used to sleep like that”, Jess whispered to Zoe and demonstrated stroking her noes in the same way.
“You still do!”, Zoe replied grinning
“No I don’t!”, Jess whispered back
“Jess how do you know?! You can’t see yourself when you sleep. Kris isn’t any better however!”, Zoe added smiling.
“What do you mean?”
“He’s somewhat more attached to the koala than he lets on . .”
Jess smiled, not wanting to laugh in case she disturbed Lucy. As Lucy slept, Jess was twirling Lucy’s hair again, this time not the wispy bits at the front of her head, but the bottom bit of one of her plaits. It was so soft and before Lucy had fallen asleep, Jess had taken to tickling Lucy on the cheeks with her plaits.
“I wonder how the boys are getting on with their interviews”, Zoe asked after a while.
They, well Zak, had just come out of the room, the tips of his ears burning pink. Kris grinned as he came out followed by Angela.
“Well boys, that’s all for now. We can make our way back to Jess and Lucy now. As far as I can see there shouldn’t be any problems at all - you all seem like model students to me”
Kris grinned even harder. He knew he hadn’t elaborated on a lot of stuff, and it seemed the others hadn’t either. They were good, but model students - not quite!
By the time they had made it back to Jess, Zoe and Lucy, Lucy was now awake again, and was sitting in a circle with Jess and Zoe. When they all came in he room, Lucy began to grin again and even ran up and hugged Elliot, taking his hat out his hands at the same time. Kris looked stunned that someone actually preferred Elliot to him, but he looked at Jess, who was smiling at Elliot.
Lucy was now running around the room in a circle with the hat upon her face. Angela laughed, as did Zoe and Zak laughed, but his eyes were glued to Angela. Kris sat down on the floor next to Jess. Zak sat down in between Kris and Zoe and Angela perched on a chair watching. Elliot was still standing up, watching this little girl run around with his hat covered her head. She topped, evidently a little dizzy and tried to walk but stumbled sideways,. Elliot leant forward to steady her, as she was about to fall right near him.
He placed his arms round her waist and steadied her.
“There you go”, Elliot said smiling, slightly amazed at how easily he was talking to Lucy. As he spoke Lucy tilted her head sideways, a look of thought replacing her smiley face.
“You speak funny”, she stated. Elliot laughed
“Lucy!”, Jess exclaimed
“Jess, it’s fine”, Elliot said looking at Jess. He looked back to Lucy, who was still in the security of his hands. “I’m Welsh”, he told her, “Which is why I have a different accent”
“Accent”, Lucy repeated
“Yes. And I even speak Welsh too”
Lucy’s face lit up and her shining eyes widened. She grinned and Elliot grinned back.
“Can you. . .teach me?”, Lucy asked, again as usual struggling to get her sentences out fluently
Elliot looked to Jess, to Angela then back to Jess. Both nodded at Elliot. Then, Zak, Zoe and Kris began to talk and the room was filled with voices once more. Elliot took his hands off of Lucy’s waist and Jess watched on as he took Lucy’s hand, and led her to the side of the room and sat down next to her. Lucy gazed up into Elliot’s face as he began to teach her a few bits of Welsh.
