In the Flat in late October

Kris was hunting through his room for a pair of fishnet tights he needed to wear that evening for the SU Karaoke Night when he came across an old picture under his bed. It was taken last year at a Halloween ball, where Kris and Jess were laughing, staring in eachother's eyes. It was a lovely picture and Kris smiled briefly, as a dart of pain seared his heart for a moment. He decided to put it back where it was, on the floor.

"Kris! Could you help me off the toilet please!" yelled Zoe from the bathroom. "Thank you!"

Kris sighed, and got up from the floor, smoothing down his dress, heading to the bathroom, "Coming, Zo!"

He was used to this, it had been his rountine for the last few weeks as a heavily pregnant Zoe could barely walk. Kris headed in the bathroom and helped Zoe off the toilet with a loud "Yrrrrhhh!"

"Thanks, Kris, I'm just too big!" exclaimed Zoe, looking down at her huge bump. She only had five weeks to go before the birth of her and Mike's first child together.

"You're welcome. Have you seen Mike?" asked Kris, concerned.

Zoe shrugged, sighing, " Look, Kris, I know he's said he'll stand by me, but I know he doesn't want this baby, so I can't pretend to play happy families when it's actually not. It's best for all of us if Mike just leaves us alone. I'll be alright with the baby, Kris. So what's up with you?"

Kris nodded, "Fair enough, it's your life. Nothing's much up with me, it's been rather dead around here. What's Zak doing tonight?"

"Dunno." Zoe sat down on the sofa in the living room, and switched on the TV. " Could you make me a cuppa, thanks?"

Kris smiled as he boiled the kettle. He didn't mind this, he quite liked it, spending time with Zoe and the unborn baby, it reminded him of when he was a child and his mother used to cradle him in her lap. Kris was looking forward to Zoe's baby being here, he was sure she'd be a great Mum.

Later that Night

Kris had returned to the flat, from the Karaoke Night, where he'd had a great night and was worn out already.

"Oh God, I feel old!" sighed Kris, as he slumped onto the sofa, next to Zoe who was slurping on a Yahoo chocolate milkshake, watching 'When Harry Met Sally.' " I've only been out for a couple of hours and yet I'm shattered!"

"Aww!" said Zoe, putting an arm around Kris.
"Wanna watch this with me?"

Kris nodded, his eyes gleaming happily," Sure, I love this film!"

About half way through the film, Kris was dozing off but Zoe was wide awake as the baby was kicking inside her.

"Kris," whispered Zoe, " Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure," yawned Kris, opening one eye to look at Zoe.

" Do you still love Jess?"

Kris just stared at Zoe, his mouth agape. "Huh? Wha-No! Why?"

Zoe smiled, " You do, Kris. You do still love her. And do you know why I know?"

Kris looked at her brown eyes gleaming with excitement, " Why?"

"You talk about her in your dreams...Oh Jess! Oh I love you, Jess!"

Kris went bright red and muttered angrily, " No I wasn't, Zoe! I don't do that!"

Zoe laughed as Kris hit her with a cushion, " Aww, Kris!"

Kris scowled at her and got up, " Find somebody to help you up cos I'm going to bed!" He stormed into his room and slammed the door.

But a few minutes later, " Kriiiissss! Help me up, please!"

"Coming!"

Next Day (Late Afternoon)

Zoe decided to go to Chester to get some things for the baby and so she was in Mothercare, browsing through a range of baby clothes when she suddenly spotted a familiar face...

"Oh, sorry!" she apologised as she bumped into a woman, trying to get closer to the girl, standing not far away from her.

The girl was looking through a range of dresses for toddlers, and as she turned, Zoe gasped with shock as she recognised who it was. Jessica Harris.

"Oh my god, Jess!" exclaimed Zoe in surprise, her brown eyes wide.

Jess spun around and looked equally shocked to see Zoe, even more so when she saw her huge bump.

"Zoe! Oh my god, you're pregnant!" said Jess, putting a hand to her mouth. "Oh my-"

"Out of all the places, you end up being here?!" said Zoe, shaking her head in disbelief, " Where have you been?"

She gave Jess a big hug, and smiled.

"I'm sorry, Zo. I thought about calling you, but I guess I was too scared, after, you know..."

Zoe nodded, " Yeah I do. Er, so what are you doing here?"

"Shopping for my niece's birthday. My sister and her niece live not far from here, so...What about you? Who's the lucky guy?"

Zoe nodded grimly, " Mike Barnes."

Jess's eyes almost popped out of her head with shock, "What? Mike Barnes, Sarah's dad?"

Zoe smiled tightly, "Yup, the very Mike Barnes. It's a long story, Jess, but me and Mike aren't together. It's just me and this baby."

Jess gave Zoe a huge hug and said sadly, " Oh I'm so sorry, Zo!"

" No, don't be. Want to go for a drink?" asked Zoe, smiling. " I mean, there's nothing I want for the baby here."

Jess grinned as she linked arms with Zoe. " I'd like that."

She was relieved that Zoe didn't seem to hold any amniosity towards her after what had happened and she was grateful for that. It was nice to see her old friend again.

Zoe and Jess were seated inside a little cafe in the centre of Chester, with cups of teas and cakes.

"So, what have you been up to?" asked Zoe as she bit into a chocolate cake.

Jess looked a bit uneasy, " Well, I'm living with my sister at the moment. Looking for a job."

Zoe frowned, " What do you mean, Jess?"

"Basically, I haven't got a proper home or a job. I'm in a bit of trouble."

"Oh my god, what's happened?" Zoe demanded, putting a hand on Jess's.

" Well, um, I was with this guy for a while, and then he, um, left me and took everything I had with him. So here I am, trying to make the most of it!" Jess said without a trace of humour.

"That's terrible, Jess. So you're living with your sister?"

"Yes, but I'm already a burden to her so that's why I'm hoping a present for Emma, my niece, will help, heh."

Zoe was silent for a while, and although she knew it was rather hasty, Jess was an old friend in need of help and so she had come to a conclusion.

" Right, you're coming to live with me in Hollyoaks." said Zoe firmly, fixing her gaze on Jess. " I'm not taking no for an answer, Jessica."

Jess was about to protest but one look at Zoe's stony face, she closed her mouth. "Thanks, Zo. You're so nice and I don't deserve it!" She started to cry.

Zoe smiled, and handed her a tissue, " Don't cry, it's my pleasure. Beside, I need a female around the house, Kris is no use!"

Jess's smile faded at the mention of Kris. " Kris? He lives with you?"

"Yeah, Kris, Zak and I all live together. Zak's away to London on this football training programme or something, so it's just me and Kris at the moment. Right, come on, Jess, let's go and pack your stuff!"

Zoe tried to get up from the chair but failed so Jess went around the table and pulled her up. "Yrhhhhhh!"

" My God, Zo, how much do you weigh? I almost broke my back!" exclaimed Jess, massaging her back.

Zoe smiled as they headed towards the edge of town to Jess's sister house.

" I know! The midwife said the baby would be about 6lbs now!"

Jess grinned as she walked with Zoe, but inside her stomach was doing backflips as she thought of seeing Kris Fisher again. Her cross-dresser!

Jess is back!!!
I'm happy there friends again.

Back at the Flat

Kris was eating a sandwich in the kitchen when the front door opened.

"Kriiiss!" cooed Zoe, " I've got somebody I want you to meet!"

Kris sighed and got up, walking towards to the living room and he almost fell over backwards when he saw who was with Zoe.

"Jess!" said Kris, shocked and yet secretly joyous. "Wha- what are you doing here?"

He was winded, it was like somebody had kicked him in the stomach, all these feelings came flooding back. What the hell was she doing here?

Jess grinned as she looked up at Kris. It had been so long. Too long.

" Hello, Kris."

Zoe indicated the bags on the floor, " Put them in Zak's room, could ya? Jess's here to live with us!"

Kris just stared at Zoe, " Eh? What do you mean, live with us?"

" You heard, Kris. Go and put these in Zak's room!" said Zoe firmly, shooting him a sharp look.

" Um, I hope I'm not getting in the way-" began Jess nervously

" Don't be ridiculous!" said Zoe crossly,
" Right, let me show you the baby's room!"

Jess smiled and as she followed Zoe into the baby's room, her gaze connected with Kris and it was like they were channeling frisson, as they both could feel that passion burning inside them both.

Later, Zoe and Jess came into the living room and sat down opposite Kris.

"So why is she here, Zo?" demanded Kris, much to Jess's annoyance.

" I am here, you know, Kris. You can ask me that question directly." snapped Jess, her blue eyes flashing angrily at him.

Kris smirked," Fine. Why are you here?"

" Zoe very kindly asked me to stay for a while as I haven't got anywhere to stay-" began Jess.

" I'm not surprised!" said Kris, he couldn't help himself.

Jess glared at him, " What do you mean by that, Fisher?" she demanded icily.

Zoe smiled to herself. This was more like it. She was happy now.

Few weeks later

Zak had arrived home from his football training programme and was happily reunited with his good friend Jess. Zoe was fine, her bump growing bigger each week! Kris and Jess were always sniping at eachother, as usual. It was like old times, when they were all living together.

"Oh, good old times!" sighed Zoe, as she flicked through a photo album of the past.

"Yeah," said Zak, handing Zoe a cup of tea, " Here you go, babe."

"JESS!" yelled Kris furiously," Where are my shoes?"

Jess opened the bathroom door where Kris squared up to her angrily, and she looked at him rather calmly, " I have no idea, Kris, and calm down please, it's not good for Zoe's baby!"

Kris's eyes were bulging angrily, " I know you've stolen my shoes, and I want them back, Jess!"

Jess smirked, " Or what? What are you going to do?"

Kris really wanted to strangle her, but he just stared at her, their faces inches away from eachother, their gaze interwined, their hearts pumping loudly.

" Just shut up. Shut up!" he yelled at her as he stormed back into his bedroom.

Zoe was laughing from the living room, " My god, Jess. I haven't seen that side of him for so long before you came! You really get to him, don't you?"

Jess nodded, smiling as she joined Zoe on the sofa, " And so does he! He's so annoying!"

"Oooh!" exclaimed Zoe.

" Yeah, I mean-"

"Ooohhh!" said Zoe again, clutching her belly, " Something's leaking!"

She stood up and sure enough, there was a pool of water on the sofa.

"Oh, Zo, you ok?" asked Jess, worriedly.

Zoe tried to keep calm, " I think the baby's coming. Just go in my room and get the bag next to the bed..."

Zak immediately phoned for a taxi as Jess ran to Zoe's room to get the hospital bag, yelling

" Kris, get out of there and help Zoe! The baby's coming!"
