It had been another awful day in school,no matter what she said or did,nobody wanted to know her. The taunts and insults seemed to follow her wherever she went. Even when she got home,her two older brothers Dan and Mark,would get stuck into her. The only place that she felt happy and safe was her room. Nobody in her family ever bothered to come in. Her mother and her had never been close and her father had left soo after she had been born.
She always got the feeling that she was a mistake and that her mother blamed her for her dad leaving. She also knew that she was not the beautiful and slim girl that her mother had always wanted. Instead,all of her mums attention was focused on her two golden boys who could do nothing wrong,even though they bullied her all the time,her mum thought it was funny,as she would often laugh at their so called jokes.
All she had ever wanted to do was fit in,but nothing she did worked. She knew that she had to lose weight but every diet had failed. Holding the bucket in her hand and sticking her fingers down her throat,she knew this was the only way to stop the taunts and be the person that she had always wanted to be.

Melissa had laid in bed that night sobbing hard underneath the covers,making sure she kept quiet so that nobody could hear her. The last thing that she needed at the moment was fake sympathy from a family that didn't love her. Making herself sick hadn't been as bad as she was expecting it to be,she actually felt quite proud of herself for doing it. The moment she had finished being sick,she had logged onto her computer to share with her internet buddies her proud moment. It had been a complete accident that she had found this particular website. She had been searching for a new diet to follow,when a link popped up for this website called 'How To Make Yourself Thin'. The website name was no different to any other,yet she seemed compelled to click on the link. And she was glad that she had.
As she scrolled through the stories of other teenage girls and boys,she realised that she was not alone. The more stories she read,the more determined she had become to change. She got into a conversation with another girl called 'Lisa'. Lisa's life was so similar to hers it was unreal. They were both overweight and being severely bullied,and neither of them had anyone to turn to. Her and Lisa became online best friends,they were talking to each other every night for hours.Both of them were helping each other get through their new 'diets'. They had stopped eating at the same time and were going through the same symptoms.Stomach cramps,headaches,dizzy spells etc. But Melissa coped,she knew she had Lisa to support her and she liked that.
Tonight had been the first night that she had made herself sick however. She had found it easy to escape eating up until tonight,which was her brothers birthday. She had been forced out for dinner by her mum and even though she had only eaten salad,she knew that even that was bad for her,she knew she had to get rid of it. She did not want to let herself or Lisa down,she had come to far to go back. It had only been a couple of weeks since she had started her regime and she had already lost a stone,not that anyone had noticed. But if she carried on like this,people would begin to notice and perhaps then she would finally fit in. It didn't stop her tears from falling that night though,even though she had Lisa she still felt alone,all she wanted was to be loved and she couldn't help but wonder whether losing the weight would mean that her mother would actually hug her and tell her how much she loved her.
'Melissa,its time to get up otherwise you'll be late for school!' Melissa's mum screamed from downstairs. Unbeknown to her mum,she had been dressed since six o clock this morning.She had been unable to sleep,the stomach cramps had been getting really painful,and she had to keep fighting the urge to go downstairs and raid the fridge. She was also dreading going to school,she knew what awaited her as she crossed the school gates. Another day of torment,she couldn't face it today. She got up off the bed and left her room,she slowly crept downstairs so as not to alert her mother and left the house. She knew where she was going to go,there was a nice little cafe by the river that she had gone to since she was a little girl. She caught the number 38 bus into town,and walked the 5 minute walk to the riverside.
The cafe was really quiet,it usually was,thats why Melissa liked it. She sat down on a table outside and ordered a glass of water for herself. She had brought 'To Kill A Mockingbird' with her,she loved to read,it seemed to take her away from her own world every time she picked up a book. She sat there for a couple of hours reading,until she was rudely interrupted from her reading by familiar voices.
'Minging Melissa! We missed you in school today!' The usual gang of girls shouted from the distance.
Melissa quickly gathered her things and started to quickly walk back into town. The shouts and taunts were getting closer to her,so she picked up her pace. It was all for nothing though as the gang quickly caught up with her. One of the girls pushed her to the ground and the rest of the girls circled around her,they began to kick her and slap her. They were all laughing manically and they still carried on hurling abuse at her. The ordeal seemed to never end,until an unknown voice appeared that made all the girls scarper. Melissa just lay there on the floor with blood pouring out of her nose and mouth. This guy leaned over her.
'Oh my God! I'll call you and ambulance,you're safe now.' The guy smiled.
'No! Please,i don't want an ambulance,i'll be fine. Please don't call one!' Melissa pleaded.
'You've just been attacked,i should be calling the police aswell! If i hadn't turned up then god knows what would have happened to you!'
'Perhaps it would have been best if you hadn't shown up!' Melissa groaned,as she got to her feet.
'How could you say such a thing?' The guy sighed.
'Well look at me,i'm hardly Kate Moss am i? Don't worry about me,i'll be fine.' Melissa sighed.
'Oh no you don't! I'm giving you a lift home,you can hardly make it on your own now can you? Come on,you're coming with me young lady.' The guy smiled,his big brown eyes just wilted Melissa's defences.
Melissa had sat in silence all the way home,all she wanted to do was lie down. The cramps in her stomach seemed to be getting worse by the minute and her body was aching all over after the beating she had received. Neil was trying his best to start a conversation with her,but she didn't know what to say. She had never really spoken to a man before,as no man or boy had ever been interested in her,it also did not help that Neil was absolutely gorgeous. He had short,dark spiky hair and beautiful deep blue eyes. He was quite muscular and tall,the kind of guy that she had always fantasised about,but she knew that there woul be no way that he would be interested in her. She imagined that he would have a leggy blonde girlfriend sitting at home waiting for him,either that or he would probably have several girls o the go.
'You're not very talkative are you?' Neil asked
'Well,i can't get a word in edgeways with you yapping away can i?' Melissa snapped,she did not want him to know that she actually just wanted to snog his face off.
Neil chuckled away to himself after she said this.
'You're a fiesty one aren't you? I like a girl that answers back.' Neil said,whilst turning and smiling at her.
Melissa turned scarlet when he did this,and quickly turned away,hoping that he wouldn't notice.
'Why are you so bothered about me anyway? You don't even know me.' Melissa sighed
'Maybe i want to get to know you. You should allow me that chance,after all,i did save you today.' Neil replied.
'Trust me,you don't want to know me. I mean,look atme,i'm disgusting! Why don't you just stop the car and i'll walk the rest of the way home so you can go back to your slim,attractive girlfriend that i'm sure is at home waiting for you.'
'Actually,i haven't got a girlfriend so no,i won't pull over and drop you off here. I mean,what if those girls are waiting for you? Perhaps they want to finish the job off,you may not care but i do. I just can't believe the way you speak about yourself,i think that you are beautiful,even if you don't think so.'
Melissa just sat there shocked at what he had just said. She could not believe that he thought that she was beautiful! Nobody had ever told her that before and she struggled to hold back the tears. They sat in silence until they got to Melissa's house.
'Thank you for everything' Melissa said,turning and smiling at Neil.
'Thats okay,you get some rest now and take care of yourself. I want you to take my number. Maybe,when you're feeling better,i could take you out for a meal or something/' Neil asked,whilst handing her a piece of paper with his number on it.
'Yeah okay.' Melissa replied,not quite believing what was happening. They said their goodbyes and Melissa just seemed to glide into the house and up into her room,she couldn't believe that she had managed to pull someone as good as Neil. Surely,something had to be wrong?
Melissa immediately logged onto her computer,she wanted to tell Lisa all about Neil,she needed her advice. Lisa was online,thank god. Melissa sent her a message straightaway,explaining everything that had happened to her. She told her all about Neil and asked her what she thought she should do about him,she sent the message and waited anxiously for her reply. Melissa paced around her room,until she heard a beep from her computer. She knew that Lisa had replied. She sat down and read what Lisa had to say.
'I'm really sorry about what happened to you,those girls deserve to die. As for Neil,well,you probably won't like what i have got to say,but i'll tell it to you straight. I know that you are lonely and you want somebody to hold you and tell you that everything will be fine,but Neil will just ruin everything. You've come so far Mel,you've already lost a stone,just think how much more yo can lose and soon every boy in your city will want to be with you! But if you go with this Neil,you will have to eat,he'll make you eat and he'll probably make you bigger than you are already. Do you really want that? Do you really want those girls to carry on hurting you,because that is what will happen if you go with this Neil.
Sure,he does sound nice and very sexy,but i'm only thinking of you. I don't want you to chuck away everything you've been working towards for a man who will probably break your heart. Please listen to me Melissa,you know that i care about you,don't be angry with me.'
Melissa read and re read Lisa's message,tears poured down her cheeks as her words sank into Melissa's brain. She wasn't angry at Lisa though,deep down she knew that what she was saying was right. Neil would get in the way of everything that she had been working towards,and she didn't want to stay like this. Melissa looked at Neil's phone number one last time,before ripping it up and throwing it out of her window. Melissa replied to Lisa's message,thanking her for her good advice and telling her not to worry,that she would not be going back to the person she once was. From now on there would be a new Melissa,she no longer wanted to be the sweet,ugly,fat girl that everyone either pitied or bullied,she wanted to be ruthless and not take anything from anybody,nobody would stop her.
Nobody could believe the person that Melissa had suddenly turned into,in truth,Melissa could not believe how much she had changed either. The day after her beating,her brothers had yet again tried to put her down and make her upset. The old Melissa would have taken it,but not the new one. Melissa had stood her ground and refused to be bullied yet again. Neither her brothers or her mother could believe it,there was just a stunned silence as Melissa screamed at them all then stormed out of the house. She continued her stance in school,the bullies tried to round on her yet again,but she wasn't having any of it,she stood up for herself and made fools out of her tormentors infront of the entire school,since that day,they had left her alone.
On top of all this,she had now lost three stone and people were beginning to notice. Boys would now whistle at her as she walked past them in the street,and she loved it. The only problem was,the pains in her stomach were getting much worse and she was having to wear make up everyday,as her skin had broken out in acne and looked awful. She saw these side effects as minor glitches though,after all,she was beginning to get nearer to the person that she had always wanted to be. There was still somebody that always lingered in her mind though and that person was Neil. She wished that she could see him just once more,so she could just go for broke and snog his face off.
She just wished that Neil had met her now,then maybe things would have been alot different. Even though Melissa did not think about having a relationship with him,she often wished that she had slept with him,he would have been the ideal person to give her virginity to. But she knew that she could not keep looking back like this,as it would only hinder her future. She was just extremely lucky that Lisa was there for her. They were both going through the same problems together,even though Lisa's side effects seemed to be slightly worse than Melissa's. They had exchanged telephone numbers now and spent hours on the phone to each other every night. In all truth,Lisa sounded quite ill on the phone and that made Melissa worried. Lisa always said she was fine,but it seemed that she sounded worse with every phone call.
Melissa was sat in the corner of the cafe by the riverside caught up in her own thoughts about Lisa and Neil,and was completely unaware that somebody close by was watching her. He was transfixed by her every move,he daren't take his eyes off her,not even for one second. He knew what he had to do,he got up from his chair and made his way towards her,looking around to make sure that nobody could see him. He tapped her shoulder,and scared the living daylights out of Melissa.
'My God,how stupid are you? Creeping up on a girl like that! Idiot!' Melissa wailed at the plump,middle aged man standing infront of her.
'I am so sorry! I did not mean to scare you,let me introduce myself to you. My name is Daniel Harrison, and i am a talent spotter for the Elite Modelling agency. As soon as i saw you,i had to come and speak to you,you're exactly the type of girl that we have been looking for!' Mr Harrison cooed over her.
'Are you serious? You can't be,i mean,i'm fat and surely you don't want a fat model?' Melissa replied.
'My darling you look fabulous! Maybe,you could lose a couple of pounds but that won't take you very long now will it? I'm sure you could work it off pretty quickly.' Mr Harrison smirked.
'Yes,of course i can! Wait a minute,let me see some credentials,i will not believe you until i see some proof of who you are.' Melissa sternly replied.
Mr Harrison smiled,and pulled out his works pass out of his pocket. He also handed her his driving licence,to proove his identity. Melissa grinned as she saw that Mr Harrison wasn't lying about who he was,she just could not believe that he was interested in her.
'So,do you believe me now?' Mr Harrison smiled
'Yes i do. I'm sorry,i just thought....'
'I know,every girl is the same when i approach them don't worry. Listen,i want you to take my card,i haven't got my diary with me so i can't make an appointment with you at the moment,but if you ring my PA tomorrow,she will be able to fit you in to see me. I must dash now,i have a meeting to go to. I look forward to seeing you again,i'm sorry but i didn't get your name.' Mr Harrison asked
'Melissa.'
'Well Melissa,i shall be seeing you soon i hope. Until then,goodbye.' Mr Harrison kissed Melissa on the cheek then rushed off to his meeting,leaving Melissa standing on the spot,dumbfounded about what had just happened to her.
Melissa sat down again,she suddenly felt really dizzy and sick,she just could not get her head around the fact that she could soon be a model! She just had to phone Lisa to tell her the good news. Lisa answered her phone almost straightaway,Melissa was bursting to tell her the news,but she could tell that something was wrong.
'Lisa,is something the matter?' Melissa enquired.
There was a long silence between them,before Lisa eventually answered her.
'I can't do this anymore.' Lisa sniffled.
'You can't do what anymore Lise?' Melissa replied
'I am really ill Melissa,i passed out in college today and i was taken to hospital. My BMI is really low and my kidneys have started to fail,i have to go to a special clinic in America to get better and if i don't,i am going to die.' Lisa suddenly started crying down the phone. Melissa could not believe what she was hearing,Lisa was giving up. After Lisa had persuaded her to not bother with Neil,she had suddenly decided to give up on her.
'Melissa,please listen to me. Get to a hospital ASAP and get some help,otherwise you will be in serious danger to. Please Melissa,do it for me!' Lisa cried down the phone.
'No i will not! You are a weak,sad,pathetic excuse of a human being! I am going to be a model,i am going to be a success. You are just going to be a fat,ugly,loner that people laugh at,you disgust me. I hope that you stay in America and never come back you ugly bitch!' Melissa screamed down the phone at her,before putting the phone down. She immediately blocked Lisa's number so she could not contact her ever again,she did not want to be associated with someone so pathetic.
Melissa had been in a world of her own since her phonecall to Lisa. She felt so alone now she had nobody to confide in now and nobody to help her through the side effects of her not eating. She didn't know what she was going to do,she jst felt so angry! How could Lisa let her down like this? How could she give in so easliy? If Melissa kne where she livedshe would have found her and killed her,she was that angry.
It wasn't only Lisa that she was angry with though. She was angry with herself She could not believe that she had trusted someone as much as she had trusted Lisa. And what for? She had been let down yet again,the thought of becoming a model couldn't even make her feel better. I mean how could she be a model? That nightas she looked at herself in the mirror,she just felt sick. She still looked absolutely huge and her face was still covered in horrible looking spots,what was the point in not eating anymore?
With that,she ran downstairs and opened the door of the fridge. Sure enough,the fridge was full of food,her eyes fell upon the cooked joint of beef. Without thiking,Melissa started to tear pieces of meat off the joint and began wolfing it down,it tasted so good. She had forgotten how amazing food tasted. Next she grabbed some chocolate and wolfed that down to,then some ice cream. Midway through the tub of ice cream,and she realised how disgusting she had become. Mr Harrison had already told her that she had to lose more weight and what was she doing,stuffing herself.
She immediately ran upstairs to the toilet and began making herself sick,she didn't stop until she was absolutely sure that she had brought everything back up,she did not want anything left in her stomach. After she had finished being sickshe just went to bed. She hid underneath the covers yet again and cried hard into her pillow. She did not know how much more she could takeshe just prayed to God that seeing Mr Harrison would give her something to live for.
She had been up since 4 o clock,she couldn't wait until it was 9 so she could ring Mr Harrison's PA. She just hoped that he was serious yesterday and that he wasn't taking the mick as she still could not understand why he thought that she could be a model. Nevertheless,she was still going to ring and just pray that for once everything would work out well for her.
She was sitting curled up on her bed with her clock in her hands,watching the clock tick. Suddenly,there was a knock on her door.
'Melissacan i come in please?' Her mum whispered.
'Whatever.' Melissa huffed,turning onto her stomach so she would not have to look at her mother. Her mother came into her room and sat on the bottom of her bed.
'Were you sick last night?' Her mother asked.
'Yes,i ate a dodgy burger yesterday,i am fine now though,not that you care.' Melissa snorted
'I do care Melissa,how could you think that i don't? I'm your mum and i love you!' Her mum sighed
'Thats a load of rubbish! You've never ever tried with me i did my GCSE'S this year,and you never even bothered to ask how i was doing did you? You've been to busy with your golden boys to give a toss about me! How dare you walk into my room and lie to my face,i've done without your love all of these years and i don't need it now! Just leave me alone!' Melissa yelled. With that,her mother ran out of her room sobbing hard.
Melissa didn't care,she knew what she had said to her mother had hit a nerve and she was glad. There was a time when she would have done anything for her mothers attention,but not anymore. Why should she want attention from a woman that she now despised,she would never treat a child how her mother had treated her. Melissa just lay still on her bed with her eyes on the clock,waiting for it to be 9 o clock.
As soon as her clock struck 9,she was on the phone. Mr Harrison's PA answered straightaway. Melissa explained who she was,and the PA made an appointment for her at 3 o clock. Melissa immediately began getting ready,she knew that she needed to look good and she was prepared to do anything to get what she wanted. Anything at all.
As she walked into the building of the Elite Model agency,she began to feel really sick. She couldn't believe that she was here,she felt like she should be pinching herself. She walked up to the main reception and asked for directions to Mr Harrison's office,she was told that it was on the first floor. As she walked up the stairs,a gang of beautiful,tall blonde girls came confidently striding down the stairs. They all looked so happy and gorgeous,Melissa wouldn't even like to guess how much attention they got from blokes. The girls just sailed past her,not even giving her a second glance,why should they? They were twenty times better looking than she could ever be.
As she reached the top of the stairs,Mr Harrison's office stood right infront of her. The knot in her stomach felt huge,she just wanted to turn around and go back home,she just didn't feel good enough to be here. Even though she had spent hours perfecting her hair and make up,she still did not feel like a model She stood outside the door for a while,beore deciding to throw caution to the wind and just go for it anyway. As she opened the door,Mr Harrison was standing over his PA's desk laughing and joking with her. As soon as Mr Harrison caught sight of her,he gave her a big smile. There was something about this girl that he liked,that he wanted.
'Hello again Melissa! I am so glad that you could make it,please,come into my office and take a seat. Joanna,could you go and fetch my lunch or me please?' Dan smiled knowingly at his PA. In the meantime,Melissa had made herself comfortable on the sofa in Mr Harrison's office. Mr Harrison followed her in,closing the door on his way in,he took a seat next to her on the sofa.
'I'd just like to say thank you so much for this Mr Harrison,i never thought in a million years that i could be a model.' Melissa sighed.
'Please Melissa,call me Dan,Mr Harrison is so formal and we don't need to be formal now do we?' Dan smiled at her.
'Okay,Dan.' Melissa nervously replied.
'I am so glad that i saw you yesterday,you have the look that the company are looking for. We are about to do a series of shoots for Cosmo Girl magazine and i think that you would be ideal.' Dan smiled.
'Cosmo Girl? My god,that would be amazing! When do i start?' Melissa excitedly replied.
'Now now Melissa darling,it's not as simple as that. We need to get some shots of you,just to make sure you have what it takes. You also need to lose a few pounds,but i'm sure we can manage that now can't we?' Dan cooed,he then began to stroke Melissa's leg. Melissa just let him continue,if this is what she had to do to be a model,then she was prepared to grin and bear it.
Before she knew it,Dan was on top of her. She never thought that she would lose her virginity like this,with an overweight middle aged slobbering all over her,but she knew she had to let him. He was finished within a couple of minutes,Melissa just got up and put her clothes on.
'Well,well young lady,i am very impressed,i am now absolutely sure that you have what it takes! Come back here tomorrow afternoon at one o clock and we'll get those pictures taken. Until then,you have a good rest,you'll have a very busy day tomorrow.' Dan sighed.
'Thank you Dan.' Melissa forced a smile,then walked out of the office,not quite believing what she had just done.
That's it Melissa,just turn your head to the right now. Beautiful!' The photographer smiled at Melissa 'I think we've done enough for today,you did really well,you look gorgeous!' The photographer smiled reassuringly at Melissa.
'Did you really think so? I mean,i've never had to pose before,i didn't look stupid did i?' Melissa asked nervously.
'You looked like a professional and i'm not just saying that to appease you,i mean it. You sound exactly like my son,he's trying to get into the business at the moment and he always asks for my reassurance.My names Brian by the way.' He said
The door to the studio burst open all of a sudden and in walked Dan.
'Well then Brian,tell me,how did Melissa do?' Dan sighed
'She was brilliant,looked like the perfect model.' Brain huffed,she had the feeling that Brian did not like Dan at all and she didn't blame him. After what she had done yesterday,she could barely look at him,she felt disgusted with herself. She had barely slept that night,as she couldn't get the image of him writhing around on top of her out of her mind,she just prayed to God that he wasn't expecting the same treatment today.
'So Melissa,it looks as if you've passed the test. The photo shoot for Cosmo Girl is next week and i can now put your name down. How about you come back to my office to celebrate?' Dan smirked,it was like he was undressing her with his eyes.
'Actually Dan,i had already invited Melissa to come for a drink with me and my son,hadn't i melissa?' Brian looked at me.
'Yes and i already said i would go. Sorry Dan.' Melissa smiled at him
'Never mind,there'll be plenty more times for us to celebrate together i am sure. I shall see you next Monday Melissa,come to my office at nine o clock,we have a couple of things to sort out before the shoot. I shall no doubt see you soon Brian,enjoy your drinks won't you.' Dan sneered,before leaving the room.
'Thank you for that Brian.' Melissa sighed
'Thats not a problem,you can buy me a drink to say thank you. I am meeting my son at the pub across the street,you can get the first round in!' Brian chuckled,then left the room aswell.
Melissa followed,she was happy to buy the first round,after all,he had saved her from having to have sex with Dan again.
