Jess' POV
I know that voice, I knew I did right away. Who else do I know that gives off a strong scouse
accent like he does? It's been a long time, years infact and as both me and Kris leave the
bedroom, both a little red faced, we see we were both proved right. It is him.
"Look who I bumped into!"
"Zak!" I ran to him, hugging him tightly. "It's been ages, where have you been?!"
"Oh here, there and everywhere really." He answered and pulled back before he turned to Kris. "And I heard you were back, i'm glad you are." Both him and Kris embraced. I can't believe he's here, Zoe seems pleased. I'm glad she's smiling again. "So Zoe said you had some news...?" He hinted, finding himself a seat. I glanced at Kris, he could tell him if he wanted but he signalled for me to do it.
"Well, it's me and Kris." I smiled, he looked at us both. "We're engaged!"
"What!?" He jumped up and smiled. "That's brilliant, congratulations. Kris popping the question.."
"Jess did." He says.
"What?" Zoe looked at me. "You said Kris asked you.."
"Yeah and he did, after I asked him first."
"I'm really happy for you two, you both deserve some good news."
"Yeah, see I told you." Zoe adds.
We all sit round each other a few minutes later, it sort of feels a bit strange with the four of us like this again. Last time we saw Zak was about a week after the funeral, he got some hot shot job on the other side of town and couldn't turn it down. We hardly heard from him, so we just assumed he was doing really well and as I see him now, he must be.
"So any news you've got to tell us Zak?" I ask, interested to see what he's been doing.
"Nothing exciting, i've just came out of a relationship actually..."
"Ohh." I don't want to ask what happened but Kris beats me to it anyway.
"What happened?"
"Just drifted, I suppose. Wasn't meant to be..." He shrugged. "So I thought i'd come see if I could track you lot down."
"So you dumped your girlfriend and thought you'd come and find us?"
"Kris!"
"What, i'm just asking him."
"It's insensitive." I tell him but he just laughs it off. "It's not funny either."
"Have you two always been like this?" Zak asks, interupting us. "Bickering over anything."
"You lived with us at College, you tell us?"
"In that case, it's a yes. You've hardly changed one bit, the both of you."
"You know what, why don't we welcome you back properly...I can pop out to the shops." Kris adds grabbing his jacket. "I won't be long."
"Listen Zo, I wasn't going to say anything but.." I start, as Kris leaves. She's going to find out somehow or other, it's only fair I tell her I suppose.
"Why do I get the feeling I won't like it?"
"It's just Darren, he was round earlier...don't worry, Kris sent him packing.."
"Well what was he here for?" She asks.
"Just to pick up his things, don't worry Zo I don't think he'll be back..."
"Better not be. I might go see him you know?"
"Zak, I don't think that's a good idea.."
"Yeah, it's best you leave it." Zoe backs me up on it, I smile at her. Atleast she agrees on the less trouble part.
"Best I leave it? Zo he got you pregnant then slept around!"
"It doesn't matter, I don't care what he does anymore...I just care about the baby...I don't need him!"
"Exactly! So Zak how long you planning on staying around?"
"Well, i'll probably go back tonight.."
"You've only just got here!"
"Yeah, you can't go tonight...you should stay for a couple of nights, be like old times."
"Well only if you're sure...and i'm not putting you out or anything." He replies, whipping off his jacket.
"Not at all, it'll be nice won't it Zo?" I can tell she wants him to stay so much. "So that's settled."
"I'll get the glasses, where do you keep them?"
"Top right." I direct him and once he's gone, I jump over to Zoe. "So...nice to see him isn't it?"
"Yeah, suppose it is."
"You've missed him.."
"Was that a statement or a question?" She laughs, glancing back at him.
"Bit of both..so you going to answer it then?"
"Ofcourse i've missed him, I don't know what you're getting at though."
"Sure you don't." I laugh back and act normal when Zak reappears with the glasses.
"Oh I forgot Zo, you can't drink."
"Haha, i'll just stick to water thankyou."
That's when I take my chance to leave the two of them to it for a few minutes and I go and fetch Zoe some water. I take my time on purpose as I briefly hear them chatting away in the other room. Maybe this is what she needs, someone to be there for her who won't let her down. I know me and Kris will be there but she needs someone like Zak..that's why he has to stay, I know he'll look out for her.
"I never knew a glass of water could be so interesting!" Kris' voice and the sound of the door closing behind him, sort of makes me snap out of my thoughts. "What are you thinking about?"
"Oh what? Nothing...it's nothing.."
"You sure?"
"Yeah..." I lift the glass and turn to him. "..positive, I better give this to Zo."
"Ok, i'll be with you in a second."
