Going back to their game of football, Steven ran up to the ball and quickly ran it past Zak who was pretending he hadn’t seen him. When it past the goal line, which was marked by two jumpers thrown on the floor he slid along the grass on his belly.
“Ha ha, I won, I won.”
“No you cheated, I’m not having it. Rematch or forfeit” Zak demanded but Steven stood shaking his head and didn't have a clue what the word 'forfeit' actually meant. He did know that had won fair and square and he wasn’t playing again though. “Are you scared I’ll beat you?”
“I’m not playing daddy. I’m hungry now, and I winned you anyways.”
“You chicken.”
“I like chicken, can we eat some?”
“Come on then, but after lunch we’re having a rematch.” Zak told him and Steven sighed. He couldn’t be bothered. He was getting cold and tired now. All he wanted to do was have something to eat and watch some cartoons. His mum wouldn’t make him go and play outside when he didn’t want to.
“But daddy I’m tired, and my tummy hurts.”
“Your lunch’ll fix that, come on.” Zak said leading him towards the flat. As they walked Zak looked at his watch and rubbed his head, he couldn’t believe how quickly the time had passed. He was saying lunch and it was close to bath time, never mind tea time. “Erm maybe it’s a little bit late to come back outside, how about we play one of your footy games on the computer?” he asked but Steven didn’t say anything, he just dragged himself back to the house and then lay on a chair while Zak found his way around the kitchen and tried to make something half decent to eat.
While Steven lay waiting for his food he could hear his dad chanting away to himself. Everything was about football, even putting a slice of meat in between two bits of bread was him making a tactical substitution, as he had disregarded one filling and went with another. Finally the sandwich was assembled and Ramsey had ‘put one in the back of the net’ or so he said anyway before carrying the plate through to the living room where he found that Steven was out for the count which in turn added another point to his scorecard. There was no denying that Zak was a bigger kid than his 4 year old son and he knew it as well. He set the sandwich down on the coffee table and went and got a small blanket to put over his son before settling himself down in front of the TV and flicked through the stations, not realising that he’d stopped at the channel that Steven always had on. Normally he’d sit and watch the sports channels but today the cartoons played away, and he found himself humming away to the songs that were on.

Kris had taken Ollie to the super market with him to keep him out of trouble at home while Jess was doing her little cleaning routine. He knew how much mess Ollie made while Jess was putting things away, and even when Kris tried to help her, himself it just wasn’t good enough. If it wasn’t done by her then it just wasn’t done at all. Plus her meaning of the word clean was something totally different to Kris’ no matter how much he’d changed.
It wasn’t often that Kris had the opportunity to take his son out anywhere so today he felt that he should, because with him working so much, he felt like he was missing out on his son growing up, but there wasn’t a lot he could do about it. He needed to work for them to be able to afford the more lavish things that they had grown accustomed to. Before they reached their destination Oliver started to ask his dad questions about his other grandma and granddad, the first one being did he have one.
“What’s all of this?”
“Nanny Sandra said I had to ask you.” He answered his dad and Kris looked at him, deciding what to say.
“They live far away, that’s why you don’t see them.” He said hoping that that would be enough to deter him from asking any further questions but he wasn’t that lucky. He wanted to know where they lived and why he never got to see them, as well as what they were called. Kris sat in the car park for almost half an hour explaining all sorts of thing to his son although he wasn’t that comfortable with having to talk about it but Oliver had a right to know. They were his grandparents no matter how and what Kris felt about them.
“Can we go and see them one day?”
“I don’t know son.”
“Why, they’re your mummy and daddy. I see you and mummy every day.”
“Because you need us, and we have to look after you. When you get bigger though you’ll move away from us.”
“I won’t” he shook his head, and Kris looked over at him and laughed softly. “Can we go then?”
“They’re very busy” he lied but once again that didn’t bother Oliver he just wanted to know what they were busy with, but Kris couldn’t explain that he didn’t actually know what they did because he didn’t talk to them, and hadn’t since he’d been in college. “Now come on you, before the shop closes and we have nothing for supper.” With that they both unclipped their seatbelts and opened the car doors so that they could climb out each action in synchronisation right up until they made their way into the building and Kris grabbed a trolley, telling Oliver to take hold of the side of it so that he didn’t fall behind and dawdle about the place

When they got back to the flat, Jess was finished with her housework and was sat in front of the tv with a glass of wine, and watched Kris struggle through with his hands full of bags, while Oliver just ran straight in and over to his mum. He told her what his dad had told him about his “new” grandma and granddad as he branded them. The excitement in his voice was something else, and it made Jess smile. One thing she knew though was that it would have been hard for Kris to say anything at all about his parents, because he never spoke of them. She couldn’t remember the last time they had been mentioned, and she hadn’t even met them because things were so struggled and complicated. After listening to her son for a while, she got up leaving him to watch his cartoons for a little bit and went to see Kris who was putting the stuff that they’d just bought away in the cupboards. He didn’t even know if they were going in the right places or not but they were going somewhere.
“Leave that I’ll do it.” She told him but he carried on tossing things about and into cupboards and on shelves. “Kris, just leave it.”
“I’m almost done now.”
“Ollie’s just told me that you and him had a long chat.” She said and he nodded, still going about his business. “Come and sit down.”
“Cos that’s going to get this lot done isn’t it”
“You knew it would happen someday, we both did. We just never talked about it ourselves first.” She said and smiled at him, trying to get him to smile back and cheer up a little as he sat down at the table beside her.
“All I could think back there was that they don’t even know they have a grandson. They don’t know about us, our little family. How do I tell him that?”
“It’s ok baby.” She said rubbing his arm and taking his hand in hers. “It isn’t too late to tell them. You can make contact with them, if not for you then for Ollie.”
“You always said I wasn’t allowed to call him that, do you remember?” he asked changing the subject but it brought a smile to his face as the memories replayed over in his mind. “I soon had you calling him that though didn’t I?”
“Yeah you did, now stop trying to change the subject. Just because you avoid it for a while doesn’t mean it’ll disappear.”
“Worth a try though”
“Not with me it wasn’t. You should know that by now Kris.”
“Hmm yeah, but I can’t talk to them Jess. They hate me, and have done for years. I’ll never be able to face them, or keep it together in front of them even if I did manage to go.”
“But me and Ollie love you, and we always will. Just remember that.” She said comforting him, as the tears formed in his eyes. He couldn’t believe that he was letting this get to him. He knew that he didn’t need them, he never had. All they’d done was stop him from being himself in the past, and now he was free to be himself. “You take the first step, show them that you’re prepared to put things behind you…”
“I don’t think I can Jess.”
“I know you can though. You’re much stronger than you think.”
“That’s my line.” He said wiping his eyes, and he tried to stifle a laugh but he just couldn’t manage it. “I know this is selfish because they’ll probably adore Ol if they had the chance to meet him, but I’m not prepared to go over there Jess.”
“If that’s how you feel that’s fine. Maybe they can come here, if they’re here then they might not…”
“No they can’t.”
“Ok, how about I arrange to take him there. You won’t have to se them, or talk to them.” She suggested and Kris looked up at her. She couldn’t be serious, she didn’t know them, she couldn’t go by herself but then again he just couldn’t go.
“But..”
“Hold that thought, I’ll be right back.” She said and moved from her seat popping her head around the door to check on Oliver who was extremely quiet, but he was just lying on the floor, his head propped up by his arms while his feet were kicking away behind him. Walking back over to the table and taking her seat, she picked up from where she left off and told Kris that she could go. She may not know his parents but maybe that was a good thing. They had no reason to have a go at her. He still wasn’t sure though, all he could think was that it was making him look even more like a coward than he already was. “It could be a weekend when my dad has you at one of your overnight meetings.”
“I don’t deserve you.” He said having agreed that if she was prepared to do that then he couldn’t really stop her. No matter what he said she’d find a way around it.
“Someone obviously disagrees with you, I mean look at us. We’re still together and have a wonderful, if sometimes cheeky son.” She told him and moved her hand to stroke his cheek. “Maybe you should go and tell him about them some more.”
“I can’t do that.”
“Why?” she asked him, and he explained that he had nothing nice to say about them, just like they would have nothing decent to say about him, no matter how much Jess could reel off. The Kris she knew, was totally different to the one they knew. In fact the hadn’t even allowed themselves to get to know him, just shunned him leaving him on his own, with only his friends back at college to help and support him.

Right ok now to start with fab Kay. I loved it.
For mains I'm not so sure about Jess going over there without Kris. Number 1. she will miss him far too much. Numeber 2. He will miss her far too much. Number 3. His parents/family assuming Malachy is there may be mean to her and that isnt very nice.
Now for Dessert I cant wait to see how this all plays out. Fantastic xxx

P.s. poor Kris, I think he needs a nice, lovely hug Hug

“I’m back” Zoë called as she threw open the door, her hands full of shopping bags, kicking the door closed she went through to the living room, kicked off her shoes and slumped down on the settee beside Steven who was still fast asleep, her bags just left on the floor around the sofa. “I’m shattered, I think I overdone it.” She yawned.
“Nowt new there then.” Zak said taking his eyes away from the TV for a second. Zoe couldn’t believe that he was sat there his eyes glued, she had no idea what could be so enthralling, but then she heard a song that she recognised which made her totally crack up. “What’s so funny?”
“Why the hell are you watching this?” she asked him, pointing to the TV that was still playing the cartoons. “He’s asleep and they’re still on, is this what you watch at your place?”
“No, anyway he’s just dozed off.” He said but Zoe could tell that Steven had been asleep for at least an hour just by the way he was lying.
“Yeah ok Zak, I believe you” she said shaking her head. He knew that she didn’t but didn’t bother carrying on that conversation any more, and changed it asking if she’d bought him anything, of course he was just joking. “Let me see…erm no.”
“Nothing?”
“Correct, now anything else you need to know?”
“Well there is one thing”
“Which is?” she asked him, and his cheeks started to go a bright shade of red. “Oh erm…how do I say this?” she asked herself out loud not meaning for Zak to hear, and making him think that the question was directed at him. “You’ve…well we’ve been through so much together, and of course I care about you…”
“I’ve always hated that word, I’m sorry I mentioned it. I’ll just be off.”
“Oh Zak, don’t go. It’s going to take more than a day to change things. You’ve just broke up with Lucy and we’ve been apart for 3 years, there isn’t a magic wand to make everything right.”
“I know that, but I know how I feel, and I thought…well I thought you felt the same, how stupid can you get?” he said slapping his hand against his forehead and wishing he hadn’t said anything at all.
“You aren’t stupid, well ok maybe a little bit.” She said slightly laughing and he made a face at her. “But that’s what everyone loves about you.”
“Everyone except you.”
“I never said I didn’t.”
“But you never said you did.”
“And I’m not going to either, not yet anyway.” She told him and he looked at her asking what she meant. “What if in a few days or weeks you realise that you want Lucy back?”
“As if Zo.” He laughed, sure he might have just ended the relationship, but he’d ended it because she couldn’t give him what it was he truly wanted, whereas Zoe already had and that was why he loved her and wanted to be with her. “I know I’ve done and said some unforgivable things to you, but I never meant them. I just wanted to hurt you like you did with me. When you kicked me out…”
“Let’s not talk about that, we both have different recollections of what actually happened. Just take things one step at a time, yeah.” She said, the last thing she wanted to do was get into an argument. “You hungry?”

“Starving.”
“Haven’t you made anything?”
“I made Steven a sandwich.” He said pointing to the plate that lay untouched on the table in front of them. “He fell asleep before I’d finished.”
“I’m quite hungry myself, take away or shall I cook something? Before you answer, remember my legs and feet are aching.” He told him.
“Oh erm in that case you’d better stretch them and go cook.” He answered and she threw a cushion at him. “No I’m gonna get off now. Pick something up on the way home, you can order something.”
“You might as well stay for something if that’s the case.”
“Oh aye, is that cos you’re skint then?”
“No, I’ll pay.” She said but Zak shook his head, if her stayed again then Steven would get the wrong idea and think that he was going to stay all of the time and he didn’t want him to think that. “Please, half the stuff’ll only go to waste anyway and it’s been a while si-”
“I was here last night.”
“You know what I mean; now stay where you are and I’ll go find a menu.” She smiled tiredly and went through to the kitchen and raided the drawers until she had the one she wanted. She didn’t even bother asking Zak what it was he wanted, she knew from past experience that he’d eat just about anything that was thrown at him.

The weeks were passing and Kris and Jess were trying to figure out the dates for her and Ollie to go over to Ireland and meet Kris’ parents, but so far they had nothing. Everything Jess suggested Kris would shrug and say no, the time wasn’t right, or he had a meeting that would only last a few hours so he’d be home the same night. Getting nowhere fast Jess went and got the calendar from the wall in the kitchen and just picked a date. She’d had enough of trying to find a date they could both agree on, and it was becoming more and more clear that Kris was just being awkward, but from his point of view it was with good reason. He didn’t want her to go and get a load of abuse from his parents, and yeah he’d agreed to them going, but he didn’t think that anything would come of it. He should’ve known better with Jess though.
“Kris, we have to go. You promised Ollie that he was going to see his grandparents and you can’t go back on it.” She told him and he sighed. He knew that he’d been defeated.
“You win, just like you always do. I’ll have a word with your dad tell him when I can go down to the other office.”
“You don’t have to go away just because we are.”
“I do, I’m not staying here by myself with nothing to do. And before you even say it don’t bother…” he told her and she looked at him all innocently and smiled, pretending not to know what he was on about. “And that’s not washing either, I know you far too well, I’m not coming.”
“I never said a word, I know this is going to be hard enough.” She said and he leant over the table and kissed her, showing her that he was grateful to her for being so understanding. “You do know you’re going to pick our adorable little boy up from school though don’t you?”
“Can’t Zo get him, take him back to hers for a little bit. We have important things to discuss.” He winked at her, and she shook her head. As tempting as it was, it just wasn’t happening. Zoe had her own things going on, and she didn’t need another child to look after. “You can go for him then.”
“He’ll be so excited when he sees that his daddy has come to pick him up.”
“Yeah right Jess.”
“He will.”
“You’ve said that everyday for the past week and a half. Why not just say that you can’t be bothered to move yourself?” he asked and she slapped him for being so cheeky with her, but he was right. She couldn’t be bothered to move herself, besides she had to find a flight for her and Oliver. Looking at the clock, Kris seen that he had half an hour to spare before his son needed to be collected and he thought about what he could do considering Jess was being all bossy and annoying. “I’m gonna go see Zak for a bit before I pick Ol up, you want anything while I’m out?” he asked her and she shook her head. Before he went to get his jacket and keys he kissed her on he forehead and told her he wouldn’t be long.

Out of the flat Kris was finally free from the talk of his ‘other’ family. He hated sitting there and having to say that they were his parents but he had to for Oliver. As he went to get into the car he decided not to bother with it, and ended up walking along to the gym to talk to Zak. When he got there though he didn’t just find Zak on his own, there was the usual crowd that went for their regular sessions in the fitness rooms and Zoe was sat on the desk, a huge smile on her face.
“You look like the cat that got the cream Zo.” Kris laughed and she smiled an even wider smile, which he made a face at and shook his he as he laughed. “So you did get it.”
“Can’t a girl just be happy?”
“Definitely not, you lot are never just happy.” He joked and she told him that she and Zak were getting on much better, but of course he already knew that. Everyone knew that, it wasn’t a secret. He and Jess had had Steven a few nights over the past few weeks so they could spend some time together. This was the first chance he’d had to actually talk to either of them properly though. “How’re you two going then?”
“We’re getting there, but…”
“Oh no, not a but. Isn’t anything ever simple with you two? First you’re all over each other, then it’s like the house of flying daggers, and now whatever this is.”
“It’s nothing bad; he just won’t talk about anything serious. Every time I go to say something he just tells me it can wait, but it can’t wait forever.” She explained and Kris understood what she meant. In a way he’d been doing the same thing with Jess. Every time she’d mentioned his parents he’d change the subject or say they’d talk later, when in actual fact he had no intention of talking about them. With Zak and Zoe though it was a different matter altogether, they had things such as their divorce to discuss, as well as what was going to come of their relationship now that they were trying again. Neither of them wanted to rush in and regret it, but at the same time Zak just wanted to take things as they come.
“Where is he?”
“He’s got a class thing on at the minute. You fancy a coffee while you wait?”
“Nah I haven’t got time. I’ve been put on the school run again.” He answered and rolled his eyes. He didn’t mind picking Oliver up really, it was just a laugh to wind Jess up about it. In fact it was a relief to get away from her for a little while, but he wouldn’t be telling her that or Zoe for that matter. “Do you think I’m selfish Zo?”
“Of course not. You have your reasons for what you’re saying, and Jess has hers for going against what you really want. I also know that if it was the other way round you’d do the same as Jess.” She told him and even though he didn’t want to admit it, he knew that Zoe was right, because it was for his son, and apart from Jess, Oliver was the most important person in Kris’ life. “Anyway you’ll be glad of the peace and quiet, you’ll want to ship them back off.” She said trying to lighten the mood and he smiled at her, not really listening to what she was saying, just knowing that she was talking away, and now waiting for a reaction from him. “You could make it more convincing you know, it’s obvious you aren’t listening.” She said and he apologised to her. “Its fine, I’m used to it now.” She smiled and Kris smiled back. “You sure you don’t want a coffee?”
“Positive, but thanks anyway. I’d better make a move before Ol’s the only one left.” He said and asked if she wanted a lift to collect Steven. “Come on, I’m not gonna bite, and I promise to listen to you.”
“In that case I’d be stupid to say no.” she joked and he gave her a look as if to tell her to watch what she was saying, which just made her laugh even more as they made their way out to the car.

“Erm Kris, where’s the car?” Zoe asked as they stood in the car park, looking the few cars that were parked belonging to the members of the gym. She scanned the place once more just to make sure it wasn’t there before giving Kris a strange look. “Kris?” she said again and he started to laugh which just confused Zoe even more. “What’s funny?”
"I didn’t bring the car. Was going to but I decided against it.” He told her and she shook her head at him. “Fancy walking instead?”
“Well we ain’t got much choice now have we?” she said and dug him with her elbow, before linking arms and walking along the street and towards the school. “We’re going to be late Fisher.”
“Sorry Miss Carpenter, I do apologise.”
“Less of the Carpenter” she told him, and he asked what had gotten into her. Not long ago she was going about calling herself Zoe Carpenter, and telling people that her name had changed, but now she was more than happy to go back to her married name. When Kris asked her about it she just shrugged and told him that she was happy, not that he didn’t already know it.
“What about when the actual divorce papers come through like saying it’s official?”
“I haven’t actually signed anything yet.” She told him and he stopped in the middle of the street and stared at her. “They only come through last week, I stuck them in the drawer.” She explained and for some reason Kris felt a wave of relief wash through him. “You’d think it was you and me not me and Zak.”
“I just don’t want things to turn sour again. I mean does he know you still have the stuff there?”
“I don’t think so.” She said and Kris told her that she had to talk to Zak. If she didn’t want the divorce then she had to tell him so they could cancel legal action, and get on with things. “I know, I’ve tried, believe me I have.”
“Try harder then Zo, the longer it goes on the more you pay in solicitors fees.” He told her and she nodded. For the rest of their journey to the school they walked together laughing and chatting away until they were at the school gates when all normal conversation stopped and talk about kids over took them. It was hard not to, stood in a playground full of cooing mothers, whose children were all the best at something or other. “I hate this place” Kris said quietly into Zoe’s ear and she laughed at him, and told him she didn’t like it much either. Some of the parents were ridiculous, it was no wonder half of the kids went round with their noses stuck up in the air, and refusing to carry out tasks they had been set. “Are we like any of those?” he asked her pointing at a crowd of proud parents, their jaws not stopping for a second as they all spoke over the top of each other.
“God I hope not.” Zoe laughed and pulled Kris over towards the door where the bys would leave from. “Come on they’ll be out in a minute.” She told him and they walked towards the rest of the parents, making sure not to get too close and dragged into their conversations.
Within a few minutes of them waiting the door swung open and a mass of children fled out, all of these kids being much older than Steven and Oliver who had to be let out one at a time to make sure their parents were there
