“Why didn’t you phone me earlier, I would’ve picked you up?”
“Yeah I know that, but we wanted to surprise you, didn’t we Ollie” Jess replied a small smile on her face at seeing him stood there looking a little worse for wear after practically sprinting home. “Besides I seem to remember telling you we’d book a taxi”
“Hmm well I specifically remember me telling you not to be so stupid, but never mind that you’re home and that’s all that matters” he smiled pulling her into yet another hug. She couldn’t get over how soft he was, it had only been a day and a half and there he was acting as though it had been months. “Do I get a hug off Ollie then?”
“Did you buy me some sweets?”
“No”
“Well I didn’t buyed you any hugs” Oliver told him smiling innocently, but then made a run for it when he seen his dad getting closer and closer. “No don’t be silly Francis!” he shouted over his shoulder as he ran out of the living room and into his bedroom slamming the door behind him.
“Come out here right now mister!” Kris said trying to get all serious with his son but he could hear Ollie laughing on the other side of the door and Jess stood behind him telling him that he really wasn’t pulling off the seriousness all that well.
“Face it Kris you just can’t do it”
“Says the woman that constantly ruins the child…but we won’t go there” he added after seeing the look on her face, not even back for an hour and already he was about to cause an argument. “Slip of the tongue, sorry.”
“Yeah you better be as well.” She warned him and went back through to the living room where Kris joined her after Ollie made it clear that he wasn’t coming out unless his dad moved away from the door.
For the rest of the evening Kris asked all sorts of questions about what had happened and how his parents had been with Ollie. He knew that he’d asked some of them before but asking Jess there in person was so much better, for a start she couldn’t lie to him like she could over the phone and if she tried then Oliver interrupted and gave his version of events. So far he’d found out that the flowers in the garden were dead, his dad sat and read “silly” newspapers and shouted all day because he was horrible, and that his mum was a totally different person to the one he knew all of those years ago. The one person he really wanted to know about though was Malachy, he couldn’t believe that Ollie had found him as funny as Jess had told him. Yeah Malachy had his moments but most of them were him making a fool of himself and people didn’t laugh with him, it was always at him. As soon as the name was brought up though Jess felt rather uncomfortable and stiffened up a little before asking who wanted some ice cream knowing that it had all gone.
“We’re all out Jess, I’ll get some tomorrow”
“No I’ll go to the shop now, I just fancy it”
“Can I have crazy faces?” Oliver asked knowing that he was pushing his luck so close to bedtime but his mum told him that if he wanted them he could have them. “Can I have crisps and chocolate too…pleeeease mummy?”
“Don’t push it Ol” Kris told him before telling Jess to sit herself back down, he’d run out in the car grab a few things and she could make sure Oliver had his bath ready for school the next day. “No I just told you to sit down, I’ll go then when I get back you can tell me all about my ever so wonderful brother” he sad rolling his eyes. As soon as he mentioned him again he noticed the change in Jess and promised himself that as soon as Oliver went to bed they’d talk. “won’t be long”
“I want crazy faces daddy”
“Yes I know you cheeky monkey, but you only get them if you go in that bath” he said firmly making his son nod. Usually he’d just laugh but with the inclusion of sweets to the deal then it was a whole different matter, this was serious business to Oliver.
By the time he got back, Oliver who he thought was sat on the sofa was sleeping, and Jess was nowhere to be seen upon first glance. He knew that it had taken longer than normal but he’d bumped into people and just couldn’t get away. Every time they’d said they’d better go they remembered something so the conversation went on for another twenty minutes, in the end Kris had told them that he was happy for them and just walked off not having a clue what it was they’d been talking about in the first place. Placing the bag down on the floor beside the chair he scooped Ollie up in his arms and carried him through to his bed and tucked him in, making sure that Big Chris was right beside him. Before he left the room, he kissed his son on the forehead, turned on the small nightlight beside the bed and made sure that he was still asleep.
“He asleep already?” Jess asked almost walking straight into him on the way out of their bedroom where she’d been putting things back in their places.
“Yeah totally out of it” he smiled before telling her that he’d got everything she’d wanted from the shop.
“I don’t much feel like it now, I mean you were hardly quick were you” she laughed. “It’s probably just cream now as well”
“Hmmm if you say so but I wasn’t that long” he said in his defence. “Listen I’ll put that stuff away, well the ‘ice cream’ anyway and we can just relax in front of the tv and have a chat.”
“Sounds good to me, what we chatting about though?”
“Your weekend and how my idiot brother was”
“Can’t we just leave that…talk about something else?” she asked him confirming his earlier thoughts that indeed something had happened so he began the questioning. “Can you just drop it; I don’t want to talk about it. Today’s been a nightmare and I just want to forget about it.” She snapped hoping that Kris would just leave it and they could enjoy the rest of the night.
"What happened?"
"I don't want to talk about it are you stupid?" she snapped once more, dropping herself down onto the sofa with a huge sigh. She really couldn't deal with it right now, all she wanted was to curl up in front of the TV for a while with Kris, no problems for them to talk about for one night, she'd had enough during the day. "Look I'm sorry, but can we just leave it for tonight...please?"
"Je-"
"Look nothing happened ok, I'm just tired! I had an early morning and trying to get an earlier flight back was like hell on earth not to mention Oliver pushing all the wrong buttons...now can we please just drop it?"
"I'm sorry princess, I just don't like seeing you upset that's all." he told her, sitting down on the sofa, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her right up beside him, practically on his lap. She knew that she shouldn't have snapped at him, and that she probably should have told him what was on her mind, but she didn't want any trouble, or to cause a greater rift between Kris and Malachy than there already was, because if Kris found out, that was exacrtly what would happen. With little else said they both lay back on the sofa until Jess couldn't keep her eyes open anylonger and decided it was time for bed.

I got it Ditzy, loud and clear Razz

The next afternoon Kris had decided to call into the office to see if Alan needed anything done since he’d not shown his face in London over the weekend. Of course he’d chosen the time he knew that his father in law wouldn’t be about to avoid any arguments. It was the last thing he needed after his row with Jess earlier on in the day. He knew he shouldn’t have pushed her to tell him anything but there was clearly something other than Kris having a go at her on her mind, fuelling her temper.
While Kris was out Jess took the opportunity to call Zoe and ask if she fancied calling round for a coffee and a chat. At first she said that she couldn’t, she had some things to take care of. It wasn’t a lie, she did have things going on but it was nothing important and Jess really sounded like she could do with someone to talk to, so she put it off and made her way over to the flat.
“So what’s up?” Zoe asked, sitting down at the table, with her coffee in her hand cutting out all the small talk that she knew would start if she didn’t get in there first.
“Where do I start?” she sighed, not having a clue what to say.
“Let’s go with the beginning Jess.” Her friend answered, a small smile on her face as way of support. “There’s just the two of us here, whatever you say is just between the pair of us”
“Malachy tried it on with me” she said quietly not really wanting her friend to actually hear, it was more the thought of getting it off her chest that gave her relief than anything else but Zoe had heard and was looking at her in shock.
“Have you told Kris?”
“Yeah course I have that’s why he’s only in the office and not over in Ireland giving his brother what for.”
“Alright I get it…what did you do…did you stop him?”
“I can’t believe you just asked that”
“It’s a valid question Jess”
“It’s a down right stupid question, of course I stopped him, and I slapped him too if you must know. I love Kris, I’d never do anything like that to him.” Jess snapped at her. She thought her friend knew her better than that but and that she could count on her for some moral support it was obvious that she didn’t think all that much of her at all. Unable to hide the disappointment she felt Jess stood up from her seat and went to the bathroom. Locking the door behind her she sat there and let the tears that had been building up fall. If Zoe thought that maybe she’d led Malachy on and didn’t stop him then what was Kris going to think about it?
“Jess come on out of there”
“So you can accuse me of having an affair, no thanks Zo.”
“I know you wouldn’t do that Jess, it was just…I suppose it was just an instant reaction.” She said trying to get Jess to come out but it wasn’t working. “Jess”
“Just go home Zoe, I don’t want you here.”
“You don’t mean that.”
“I do…if you can accuse me of that then I really don’t want you anywhere near me.” She shouted at her from inside of the bathroom, determined that she wasn’t coming out while Zoe was still there. After a few minutes everything went silent and Jess heard the front door close, she called out to see if it was Zoe leaving or Kris coming back. When no one answered she decided it was safe to come out.
Stood outside of the school waiting for the boys to come out Jess made sure that she was well away from her so called friend, she really couldn’t be bothered with anymore arguments. Even though the boys were in different classes they usually always stood together and had a bit of a chat but today Jess was nothing short of ice cold. Zoe knew that it was her own fault for the way she’d reacted to what Jess had told her. She hadn’t even meant to sound like she was accusing her of anything, but she’d spoken without thinking, obviously something she’d picked up from Zak over the years.
“Jess, can we talk?”
“I’ve got nothing to say to you.” She threw straight at her and Zoe couldn’t hide the hurt in her eyes. After everything they’d been through together, she couldn’t believe that her best friend wouldn’t talk to her. Not wanting to say anything else Jess walked away and stood amongst some of the other parents leaving Zoe on her own. Within five minutes Oliver was coming through the door carrying his coat in the air along with some pictures he’d painted and his back pack that was half on his back and half on his arm. Steven was behind him, talking away about playing football. “Hurry up Ollie” Jess told him as he got closer but he had stopped and was discussing who the best player out of the two of them was. “Ollie come on”
“I’m coming mummy…come on Steven” he instructed his friend. Following Oliver, Steven walked over to Jess but when he didn’t see his mum he got all confused.
“Where’s my mummy, Jessie?”
“She’s over there” Jess pointed as they started walking towards Zoe was stood. She’d clearly expected them out of the other door. “Come on” she told them both.
“Mummy can Steven come for tea?”
“Not tonight Ollie”
“Can I go to his then?”
“Not tonight”
“Can I come to your house ZoZo?”
“Jess?”
“Didn’t I just tell you no, Oliver? Come on it’s time to go home, say bye to Steven.” Jess told him, completely blanking Zoe and walking off with Oliver by her side.

Oooooh Jess is really not very happy with Zoe Disappointed I can understand where she's coming from and yeah its a bit out of order that Zoe thought she hadnt sotpped Malachy or thta it had been her that started it but....well it was an immediate reaction and Jess should know that Zoe never meant anything bad by it...

Another little pickle for you to sort out there havent you clumsy? Razz better get cracking my dear Razz

Love it...bless Steven all confused about where Zoe was and the bit about Zoe thinking she got the talking without thinking thing from Zak LOL

When Kris got home Jess was in one of the worst moods he’d seen for a long time, she hadn’t been that bad when he’d left her so the thought of him making her that angry seemed ridiculous and he was right it was. She was only slightly annoyed by him which made him feel better when he asked her what was wrong. Of course once again he didn’t get a proper answer so instead of pestering he went to see Oliver who was watching cartoons in his room after reading his books from school.
“Can I watch with you?”
“Uh huh” Oliver replied not taking his eyes from the screen. It was like if he did he’d miss something that he’d never get the chance to see again, even though he’d seen this particular episode more times that Kris could remember.
“Did you have a good day at school?”
“Yeah”
“Have you had dinner?”
“Yeah”
“Read your books?”
“Shush daddy”
“Oh I am sorry”
“Shhhh then” he instructed, bringing a finger to his lips to demonstrate that he had to keep his mouth firmly closed, something Kris found almost as impossible as his son at times. Just thinking about how many times he and Jess had to tell Oliver to shut up and he hadn’t listened made Kris laugh and act as childish as Oliver so he started to talk and ask questions all over again. In the end Oliver was losing his temper and started throwing things off his bed in a rage, the only safe object was his stuffed Big Chris toy, which he would never throw because of the risk of making him cry.
“If you break those I won’t buy you anymore”
“I don’t care” he huffed, folding his arms across his chest and frowning. “I’m telling mummy off you”
“Oh not another one”
“Another what?” he asked taking his eyes away from the screen to look at his dad’s faced, which he wasn’t too happy about having big smile on it. “It doesn’t matter, I don’t you to talk to me anymore, ever ‘gain” he shouted when Kris didn’t bother to answer him but instead watched the cartoons and told him to be quiet. “Why is mummy angry?”
“She’s not” he said quickly, not wanting his son to think that but there was no fooling him at all.
“She is too, she wouldn’t let me go see Steven and she ignored ZoZo”
“Are you telling fibs Mr Fisher?”
“No, I promise” he said shaking his head and then nodding it to indicate that it was in fact the truth.
“Well you stay in here and I’ll go talk to mummy…ok?”
“Yes daddy” he sighed and watched him walk out of the room only closing the door part way so Oliver could sit and listen if he wanted to and no one would know.
Out in the living room Kris sat down across from Jess and asked if she’d seen Zoe at all. He wasn’t going to jump straight in and ask why they’d fallen out, he’d decided to coax her into telling him without her realising what he was doing.
“Mmm yeah she came over” Jess replied not really taking much notice as it was to do with Zoe. She didn’t care if she was honest but she wasn’t going to let Kris know that. If she did then she’d have to tell him about Malachy too and she didn’t want to, she didn’t want him to do anything stupid that they’d both regret.
“I was thinking maybe we could all go out to dinner tomorrow or Wednesday”
“The boy’s have school to think about”
“Well it’ll obviously be after school”
“No I meant for bed”
“One late night won’t hurt” he said trying to persuade her but it wasn’t working, she was too good at this game for him. “Jess what’s up with you, first me and now Zo, what’s going on?”
“What do you mean first you and now Zo?”
“Don’t pretend you don’t know, cos I know you do. I’m trying to be patient and let you tell me what’s going on yourself but its not happening. Ollie told me about school today”
“Oh so we don’t go round their place and that makes me some big bad wolf does it?” she asked getting annoyed all over again. “It’s no big deal, we aren’t joined at the hip y’know. I can go without seeing her.”
“Yeah but Jess you ignored her, what happened…you have to tell me or shall I ask Zo what’s going on?” he asked her, he knew that the answer would be no, which was exactly why he had asked. She was always one to say what it was on her mind on her own accord, making it someone else’s responsibility wasn’t her style. “Tell me then” he practically begged when she shook her head.
“I can’t, not yet”
“Well when can you Jess?”
“When Ollie’s asleep” she replied making him worry a bit more, but then again it was understandable that she didn’t want Ollie to hear anything.

Patiently Kris waited and waited until they were sure that Oliver was sound asleep. They’d both checked him on a number of occasions to see if he’d dropped off, each time he pretended to be asleep but his parents knew better. By about half past nine he finally gave in, his eyes were so heavy that he couldn’t only pretend to close them, they just wouldn’t stay open any longer. Happy that he was asleep Jess sat down on the sofa across from Kris and looked at him seriously, the look on her face was worrying him but whether he should worry was yet to be seen.
“Jess whatever it is can’t be that bad.”
“Yeah well you aren’t in the same position as me are you…you don’t know what its like to have your friends doubt what you tell them even when you think you can trust them with your life, and to be there for you no matter what” she said over reacting a little, which she knew but that was how she felt.
“So you told Zoe what was wrong and didn’t even think about telling me?”
“I’m sorry, I just needed to get it off my chest and well I didn’t think it was wise to tell you if you want the truth”
“But why not…I’m your husband”
“Which is exactly why I didn’t want to say anything. I don’t want to cause trouble”
“Well you either tell me now or I go see Zoe and she’ll tell me. Do I need to do that?” he asked, knowing that the answer would be no. If she had something to say then she wouldn’t pass it on to someone else to do it for her. “What happened in Ireland?”
“Why did something happen there?”
“Because you’ve been acting weird and when I mentioned Malachy’s name you almost ran for the hills.”
“He kissed me, we were making lunch and he ki-“
“I’ll kill him, I’ll bloody kill him. How dare he…my own brother” Kris stood up and started pacing the floor in his temper he couldn’t believe that his own family would do something to him although he should have known that Malachy would pull some sort of stunt. “Did…did he hurt you…Jess did he?”
“No I’m fine…I think I hurt him and his pride a little bit more than he could hurt me” she told him laughing slightly. It wasn’t a moment to laugh but the tension needed to be eased. “I’m sorry I was going to keep it from you…I just didn’t want t-“
“Hang on there’s something I don’t get…why did you have a row with Zoe then?”
“She didn’t think that I’d stopped him, she questioned me. If she was a proper friend she wouldn’t have done that.”
“Well we both know what happened in the past so yeah of course she asked you…you can’t blame her.”
“So now you doubt me too”
“I never said that but I can see why Zoe would…and as for the trusting people thing I know exactly what it feels like.”
“Kris I’d never do anything like that with anyone because I love you too much to even let the thought enter my head. I’ve got the most wonderful family I could ever ask for b-“
“Jess stop will you, I believe you. Of course I do why shouldn’t I?” he asked and she didn’t know whether to be relieved or not, surely it wasn’t as easy as that even though she’d done nothing to be ashamed of. “You came home early and as much as I’d like to believe it was cos you missed me terribly, it was his fault if there was something going on you wouldn’t have done that” he said filling Jess full of relief. She didn’t know what she would have done if Kris didn’t trust her.
“I’m sorry”
“You’ve not done anything to apologise for, well not to me anyway. I think you should maybe talk things over with Zoe though.”
“Do I have to?”
“Yes you do…she’s your friend and you can’t fall out over something as stupid as that, anyone would have reacted in the same way. I bet you would have jumped straight to conclusions.”
“Hmmm maybe but I really could have done with some support”
“Jess!”
“Ok fine I’ll sort it tomorrow” she told him and he smiled happily, but happiness couldn’t have been further from his mind. He was seething but he needed to appear calm if only for both Jess and Oliver’s sake, there was no guaranteeing that he’d be able to do it when they weren’t home though, as soon as they were out he was planning on making a call, whether or not he’d wanted to make contact with any of his family before.

The next morning Jess took Oliver to school, leaving Kris to stay home and clean up after breakfast. It was a well known fact that the cooking or cleaning really weren’t his domain so he was just thrilled to have the opportunity of doing both in one day. Jess though thought that it was only fair that he clean up after the mess he’d made from pouring some cereal into a bowl. She still didn’t understand how one person could make so much mess with a few bits of grain and a carton of milk, but Kris could give anyone a run for his money on that count. So the deal was he’d do breakfast if Jess sorted Oliver and took him to school, giving her time to catch up and sort things with Zoe even though she knew that when she returned from her little walk she’d have to go over all of the cleaning again because it just wasn’t up to standards. Either way they looked at it Kris had the better deal, there was no way he’d push himself to make things spotless. He scooped up the deserted cereal, dropped it into the bin and ran a damp cloth across the work surfaces before putting the milk back into the fridge. Satisfied that he was all done he went into the living room and took out his laptop and started working. He had a feeling that Jess wouldn’t be back for a while and he owed Alan at least some work for not going in over the weekend.
At the school Jess stood in the play ground with Oliver’s coat, water bottle and school bag in her hands, while he ran about with some of the boys from his class. When they’d arrived a little girl who Jess had been informed was called Shanice had asked Oliver if he’d play catch with her but he’d totally ignored her and ran off. Jess couldn’t believe that her son could be so mean so she told the little girl that next time Oliver was like that she had to tell her and she would sort it out for her, which is what she was planning on when he came home from school anyway. As she stood by herself Jess looked around the yard to see if Zoe was there with Steven, but she couldn’t see her, she’d spotted Steven and was about to go over and ask who was with him but one of the teachers came out and blew the whistle once for the children to stop what they were doing and then a second time for them to make their way to their individual classes. Once Ollie was in his line Jess handed him his things, kissed him on the cheek and waved him off as he was led inside by his teacher. Once she’d left the school she was planning on going straight to Zoe’s, despite not wanting to see her just yet. Pride really was a dangerous thing, especially for Jess who hated backing down on anything, being with Kris hadn’t helped matters either with him being just as bad if not worse. After twenty minutes Jess was stood outside Zoe’s flat knocking on the door, which was shortly answered by a rather happy Zak.
“Oh great, what d’you want?” he asked bitterly, obviously having been told that she’d had a go at Zoe.
“To see Zo”
“Yeah well if you’re here to have a go th-“
“Oh shut up and move Zak” she interrupted, joking with him but he didn’t look too impressed. “Come on Zak, I want the organ grinder not the monkey” she tried again but he still wasn’t showing any signs of laughing, although he was laughing on the inside. With no sign of him moving to let her past she pushed her way through into the flat to find Zoe, who was sat at the table drinking her coffee. Upon closer inspection Jess seen that Zoe was still in her pyjamas which explained why she hadn’t seen her at the school. “Hey”
“Hi” she replied awkwardly, it was hard for her to determine what her mood was from such a short greeting.
“Sorry Zo, I tried to stop her”
“Oh for god’s sake Zak, you’d think I was the big bad wolf.” She cut him off once again and Zoe couldn’t help but laugh at her. “Are you gonna stand there and stare all the time I’m here Zak?”
“Yeah if I need to”
“Don’t be daft Zak, I’m fine.” She told him with a smile on her face as if to reassure him. Once he was sure that Jess wasn’t going to have a go at his wife, Zak left the room but not the flat, he wasn’t leaving there until he heard the usual sound of laughter that erupted between the two women when they were together. “Go to work Zak!” Zoe shouted out to him, laughing a little. Within a few seconds she heard the door front door close.
“Wow you’ve got him well trained” Jess laughed nervously and took a seat across the table from her. “Sorry about yesterday Zo”
“I should be the one apologising”
“No you shouldn’t…you tried yesterday but I wouldn’t listen.” Jess smiled and told her that she understood why she’d reacted the way she had.
“Really?”
“Yeah, and I probably would’ve been the same if it was the other way round” she replied borrowing some of Kris’ words from the previous evening to help her. “And I acted worse than a child.”
“I did deserve it though. I know that you’d never do anything to hurt Kris or Oliver, I was just being stupid and thinking the worst”
“Well that makes two of us on the stupidity front then…so we ok?”
“Only if you come shopping next week”
“Next week? Why not today?”
“Cos if I spend anymore money just yet then there’s a good chance Zak might actually kill me.” She answered making Jess laugh once more. Their whole argument clearly in well and truly in the past, which pleased them both.
Having sorted everything out they sat and talked for hours, they didn’t realise exactly how long they’d sat until Jess received a phone call from Kris asking if she was planning on returning home anytime soon. She couldn’t believe that they’d sat there almost all day, Zoe especially who had took ten minutes not long after Jess had arrived to get ready, she hated sitting around in her pyjamas. Even if she wasn’t going anywhere, something about it didn’t quite feel right. Both of them ready thought they decided to take a walk to a small café and grab yet more coffee, which they decided they needed because it was so much better than having to make it for themselves, even if it was a little more expensive.
“I don’t wanna go home Zo” Jess moaned when she looked at her watch.
“Why?”
“I left Kris cleaning, and you know as well as I do that he makes an even bigger mess every single time…I just know something’ll be broke when I get back”
“Well take away his privileges” Zoe joked, raising her eyebrows at Jess and laughing at the suggestion. “He’d soon learn”
“Ok just stop right there Zo”
“We’re both adults Jess…it’s not like-“
“I get the picture Zo and lets just say Kris couldn’t go that long”
“He went the whole weekend”
“Only just…and he’d make my life hell if I st-“
“Yeah I think it’s your turn to stop now” Zoe said shushing her friend as they finished off their coffees and making their way to pick up the boys from school.
