The sight of her, kneeling on the floor, weeping into her hands, struck a chord with Suzanne, and in turn, hit a nerve. She felt her eyes well with tears, and wiped them on the back of her hand as she bravely stepped over to her.

The woman looked up at her.

Denise: Wh-who-?

Suzanne: Hi, I'm Suzanne - Suzanne Ashworth. I'd just like to say how sorry I-

Denise: Ashworth? Your-

Suzanne: Yes, I'm Hannah's mum.

Denise fell silent, resentment just about visible in her watering eyes.

Denise: My daughter... she was with you all summer?

Suzanne: Not exactly, no. You see, we - Me, my husband and our two boys - were away over the summer. Hannah and Melissa stayed home.

Denise fell silent once again.

Suzanne: I swear, if I'd have known what they were doing, I would never've gone-

Denise: Wait - you didn't know?

Suzanne froze.

Suzanne: I- I...

Denise: How could you not... wait, where do you work?

Suzanne: What? I...

Suzanne became red in the face with embarassment and shame.

Suzanne: I- I'm a nurse.

Denise: You're a nurse and you didn't even notice that your daughter and her best friend had been starving themselves to death? Are you completely stupid?

Neville immediately lifted his head up and strode over to them.

Neville: Hey, that's not fair-

Suzanne: No, she's right, Nev. I've been so, so stupid.

She ran off into the women's toilets, and Neville ran after her.

Gilly: Look, I know you've just lost your daughter and you're looking for someone to blame - but there was no need for that.

Denise: Oh yeah? And where were you when your sister tried to starve herself to death, and when mine suceeded?

Gilly: I-

He turned round as Suzanne came back out, with Neville by her side.

Denise (shouting): Where were you all when my daughter was starving herself to death?!

Suzanne (quietly): Melissa didn't die of anorexia.

Denise: She was- what did you just say?

Suzanne: She sustained a head injury before she died. The anorexia didn't help, but it didn't kill her.

The whole corridor fell silent, so silent that every laboured breath exhaled could be heard, making the silence even more unbearable.

Denise: A... head injury? But how?

Suzanne: We don't know.

Rhys: Hey, Mum, look!

He pointed to the window of Hannah's room, which displayed her opening her eyes and lifting her head.

Suzanne, Neville and Josh rushed in first, followed by Rhys then Gilly. But as soon as Gilly put one foot through the door Rhys turned around and raised his finger at him again, with anger gleaming in his eyes.

Rhys: No. I think it would be best if you didn't.

Gilly froze, taken aback by Rhys harsh manner towards him and felt he had no choice but do what Rhys told him to. He was also far from being in a fit state to argue - he was exhausted - both physically and emotionally.

Realising there was nothing for him to do outside, he decided that maybe it would be better if he just left. He wasn't exactly wanted there anyway.

Denise: Aren't you gonna go in and see her?

Gilly: Nah, I'm fine out here.

Denise: Hmm, well I know if it was my sister in there, I'd want to go and see her.

Gilly paused, and could feel tears beginning to well in his eyes.

Denise broke into a sympathietic smile, that contrasted her sad eyes.

Denise: She's not... your sister, is she?

Gilly shook his head. His eyes widened as it dawned on him what Denise must've been thinking.

Gilly: I'm just a family friend, that's all.

Denise: Oh. I see.

It was clear by her concerned yet understanding expression that this had just comfirmed her previous assumption.

Gilly: Anyways, I'd better be off, her friend's don't even know yet. Maybe I'll see you again another time...

His words trailed off as he walked away.

Denise: Wait.

Gilly stopped and turned back around, the tears now slowly rolling down his face.

Denise: I've lost someone I loved. I've regretted every moment I didn't spend with her. Don't let anything get in the way. Cherish every moment you have with her. Don't let her slip away.

Gilly smiled awkwardly, not knowing what to say.

Gilly: Thanks.

Denise smiled, sat back down on a chair and went back to staring into space, her thoughts, Gilly guessed, probably involving Melissa, reminiscing over the good times and wondering where she went wrong.

As he walked outside and back to Hollyoaks, Gilly found himself doing exactly the same. Thinking, reminiscing. Wondering how it had all gone wrong. Pondering over what he could have done to make things better. Deciding what he could possibly do next. What was left for him. What was left for her. What was left for them - together.

Reality hit Gilly hard when he saw Sarah and Nancy walking towards him. They didn't even know.

Sarah: Hey, Gilly!

Gilly: Hey...

Sarah: You seen Han-

Nancy: Sarah, we agreed not to bother.

Sarah: Yeah but... there's no harm in asking is there?

Gilly: Look, guys, there's something I need to tell you-

Nancy: But this is about principles.

Sarah: Can't you just stick your prin-

Gilly (raising his voice): Hey! D'you wanna know where she is or not?

Nancy folded her arms.

Nancy: Who?

Sarah: Nancy: - shut up, Gilly - where is she?

Gilly: She's in hospital, she-

Nancy & Sarah: What?!

Sarah: She's in... hospital?

Nancy: When did this happen?

Gilly: Hey hey, calm down, she regained consciousness today. Just now in fact.

He spotted a taxi down the end of the road and without warning, ran down the pavement burst out onto the road, in front of it.

Gilly: Hold on!

The driver stopped just in time, then beeped at Gilly in irritation.

Gilly: Sorry mate... look, you two get in.

Sarah: Aren't you coming too?

Gilly: Nah, I've just left.

Sarah: Are you sure?

Gilly: Yeah, just go!

He opened the car door next to the driver and leaned in.

Gilly: Hollyoaks hospital.

He handed him a ten pound note.

Gilly: Keep the change.

It's because of writing like this that I absolutely adore fanfics! Keep up the good work

After a few minutes, the once blurry shapes surrounding her formed into faces of those she knew and loved. Her mum, her dad, Josh, Rhys, Sarah, Nancy - everyone seemed to be here, though she couldn't help feeling that there was something - or someone - missing.

Suzanne: How you feeling?

Hannah nodded slowly.

Hannah: Never felt better.

Her family and friends exchanged nervous glances.

Rhys: Well the doctors say you're on the mend, so even if you don't feel like it now, you'll be better in no time.

They all nodded in agreement, but it was obvious by their concerned expressions that they knew her recovery wasn't going to be as easy and simple as Rhys made it sound.

Hannah: Well I wasn't gonna leave without a fight, unlike some...

Her words trailed off as she thought of Melissa, a thought that soon led her to realise who was missing.

Hannah: Where's Gilly?

They all looked round the room, it was clear that his disappearance had gone completely unnoticed. Rhys was the only one who wasn't looking around, and Hannah noticed.

Hannah: Rhys?

Rhys: He just popped back, Han. 'Said he was feeling tired, or something.

Hannah: I... I'd like to talk to him.

Suzanne looked over to Rhys, a confused expression on her face.

Suzanne: Rhys, can I have a quick word outside?

Hannah: No, don't leave.

Suzanne smiled comfortingly at her daughter.

Suzanne: I'll only be a minute, love.

Hannah: I know, I just... want you here. I want everyone here.

Suzanne: Well, maybe Rhys can give Gilly a ring, and tell him to come back.

Hannah: Yeah. Yeah, that would be good. Rhys?

Rhys hesitated, clearly reluctant. But he couldn't help but soften as he looked at her, concern and desperation etched across her face.
