Kris, Jess and Zoë were all in the flat together sitting in complete silence. The atmosphere could be cut with a knife. Zoë didn't even know what had happened, just a few days ago they were getting along great, but now it had all changed. It was always the same though, and as usual it was Jess that had made the mistake, and she was paying for it. Every time Jess built up the courage to apologise to Kris he dismissed her, it was as though she wasn’t there. He knew that it couldn’t go on forever but he had a right to be angry at her, especially with the way she had treated him. The hardest situation to be in though was that of Zoë. She was a friend to both of them, but for some reason felt as though she was betraying the other by going between the two, and it wasn’t about to get any easier if they continued to go on the way they were. Zoë wanted to do something about it and badly, all she had to do was come up with a plan. Finally it came to her, getting up she went to her room and called Zak to come home, she needed his help. Closing the front door behind him he didn’t even acknowledge the two people sat in complete ignorance, instead he went straight through to see Zoë. Zak and Zoë had a long conversation about how they could make Kris and Jess see that they were being stupid and that they needed to put things right. Zak however made it qutie clear that he wanted no part in it at all. He knew that there'd be trouble if they interfered.
Out in the living area both Kris and Jess were still sat ignoring each other, but every so often they would look up at each other and then quickly look away so that they weren’t caught by the other. Having better things to do Jess stood up and made her way across the floor into the kitchen area. She needed a caffeine boost before going to finish the article that she’d started for the newspaper. As she went to walk away from him, Kris reached out for her arm and pulled her down onto the sofa so that she was sat beside him. This was the closest that she’d been to him in weeks, it felt strange but unbelievably good, so good that she didn’t resist him. They both felt so much for each other but neither of them could face up to their true emotions. Jess couldn’t get close enough to Kris, because every time she tried he hid his feelings behind Nathan. The worst part though was that he didn’t feel a thing for him, Nathan was just a way to block out the pain that was Jess. Kris had never expected to be attracted to Jess but he couldn’t help but want her and the arguments and grudges were yet another way to get her out of his system. They hadn’t worked though; it just made him want her even more.
Jess: What do you want?
Kris: To talk.
Jess: I’m not apologising to you again Kris, so you’re wasting your time, and mine.
Kris: Just as well I don’t want your apologies then isn’t it? Listen I know how sorry you are and I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have –
Jess: What makes you think that I want to hear any of this? You wouldn’t listen to me so why should I listen to a word you say?
Kris: Well, the fact that you’re still here says a lot. Plus it’s not very often that Kris Fisher apologises to anyone. I know that I’ve been stupid and arrogant and I’m sorry Jess. I’ve been selfish, but you have to understand that you hurt me. The one person I thought I could trust.
Jess: You finished yet?
Kris: Yeah.
Jess: Good, now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got work to do. (Getting up to leave) Oh and by the way, you didn’t need to punish me; I did a good job of that all by myself.
Kris: Jess please, talk to me.
Jess: I said everything that I needed to say, you were just in a strop, and I’ll speak to you but not because we’re friends, but because we have to share this flat.
Kris: Jess, I said I was sorry, what more do you want?
Jess: Absolutely nothing.
With that Jess left Kris sat on the sofa, watching her as she drifted further and further away from him. This was all his fault and he deserved everything that was thrown at him but he didn’t expect this. Jess had spent so long trying to make up with him but now she didn’t want to know. What was he supposed to do, sat alone he let out a huge sigh and turned on the TV, there had to be something on that would cheer him up or at least take his mind off Jess. Jess on the other hand was proud of herself; she was so pleased that she hadn’t caved in. She was sick of letting Kris get the better of her, now it was her turn to hand out the silent treatment and enjoy the grovelling that Kris was more than likely to do.
Zoë and Zak had heard the closing of Jess’ bedroom door and went out in the hall to see Kris sat alone. He looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Unable to keep her nose out Zoë went to see what had happened and dragged Zak along with her. Kris told them what had happened and they were shocked to say the least. Zoë thought that Jess would have been delighted that Kris had swallowed his pride but obviously not.
Kris: I’ve really blew it this time haven’t I? She’s not even my friend, she said flatmates and that’s it. Sometimes I really hate myself for being so pigheaded, I should have forgiven her when she first apologised.
Zak: Don’t be so hard on yourself. She’ll come round trust me, besides it’s her that’s in the wrong not you. She just wants attention.
Kris: Nah, she’s just trying to get even. I must say though I can’t blame her after all the things I’ve done to her.
Zoë: Shall I go and talk to her?
Kris: No it’s getting late, leave it ‘til the morning. In fact I’ll try it myself.
Zoë: Ok then, well I’m going to turn in. Night guys.
With that Zoë went off to bed leaving the two guys sat in front of the television. Zak was the next to get up and go but before he went to bed he tried to get Kris to tell him what had happened between him and Jess. Kris explained that it was just a silly argument that had got out of hand. Jess had crashed his date with Nathan and they’d spilt up (Jess however didn't know)but that wasn’t why he was angry at Jess. He was angry because she was the only person that truly knew how to get to him. Kris stayed in the same place all night and only moved when he was woken up by Zoë at half past ten the next morning. Just as well it was Saturday otherwise he would’ve been late for his lecture.
Kris looked rough, it might have been due to the fact that he’d spent the night on the sofa, or maybe that he’d had very little sleep. Zoë could see that he was still upset about what had happened between him and Jess but he wasn’t going to openly admit it. Deciding to take action herself she made her way to Jess’ room where she was already awake and dressed. Zoë didn’t bother knocking she just walked in and received a mouthful from Jess.
Jess: Yeah, come in Zo, I’m not busy or anything.
Zoë: Good, now listen to me. Go out there and say sorry to Kris. I know it’s hard to believe but he’s sitting out there miserable because of you.
Jess: I’ve heard it all now. Zoë, he overacted because I borrowed something without asking. Like he doesn’t do it to me!
Zoë: It’s deeper than that Jess, and you know it. I know that the past few months have been hard on the both of you but you have to move on. Now get out there and talk to him.
The talking didn’t last long as Jess told Zoë to keep her nose out of what didn’t concern her, but she knew that Zoë was right. Jess did have to talk to Kris properly without the sarcasm and the bitterness, but it would have to wait until she’d finished her article for the paper.
Kris seen Zoë coming out of Jess’ room and smiled. Since she’d been talking to Jess he’d made him self a cup of coffee and was in the middle of making his breakfast. He’d obviously freshened up as well because he looked much more like himself.
Kris: What were you doing in there?
Zoë: Talking to Jess, I think you should go and see her.
Kris: She knows where I am, it’s up to her I tried yesterday.
Zoë: I’ve no sympathy for either of you. Pride is a dangerous thing especially when it comes to you two.
Kris carried on what he was doing, and also the conversation that he was having with Zoë, it made a change from hearing about Will, and Jess’ non existent love life. Jess however was sat in her room trying to concentrate on her article, but every time she went to type something a thought of Kris popped into her head. An hour had passed since she’d had her conversation with Zoë, and still she hadn’t came up with anything new for her piece for the paper, it was then she decided that enough was enough; she had to do something, even if it was so that she could get some work done.
By the time Jess came out of her room there was only her and Kris left in the flat. Zak had taken Zoë shopping for some supplies for her coursework and Kris had nothing on until his shift at The Dog.
Kris: Do you want some coffee; I was just about to make one?
Jess: No thanks, but I would like to talk to you about last night.
Kris: Go ahead, I’m listening. Don’t let the face fool you.
Jess started to laugh; it was the first time that Kris had seen her smile in ages, and it made him smile. No matter what had happened Kris always had a way of lightening the mood, especially when it was in his best interests. Jess began to talk while Kris carried on making coffee.
Jess: I’m sorry Kris; I didn’t mean what I said last night. I was angry.
Kris: No you were right, I shouldn’t have ignored you. I’ve got enough enemies right now Jess, I could really do with a friend.
Jess: So we can go back to normal now then can we?
Kris: As long as the arguments don’t offend us too much then yeah I suppose we are. Listen I’ve got a shift later but maybe we could -
Right in the middle of their conversation Jess’ phone rang; she looked at the caller id and decided that she could take it another time. Dean would understand that she had things to take care of. Kris though wanted to know who it was and what he was like. This was what he’d missed most, being able to have a good old gossip with one of his best friends. Jess wouldn’t say anything other than Dean was a guy on her course and they’d gotten friendly over the past few weeks. Kris smiled at her and began the taunting that usually came with any of the conversations they shared. Secretly though Jess didn’t want to get close to Dean she wanted to get close and intimate with a certain Mr Fisher.
A few hours later and Kris was in the middle of his shift at The Dog when Jess walked through the door with someone hanging from her arm. Kris could only assume that it was Dean, and he was right. Dean left Jess over at a table while he went up to the bar for drinks. Kris gave him the once over and came to the conclusion that he was probably a decent person but just not for Jess.
Kris: What can I get you mate?
Dean: A beer and a white wine please.
Kris: You must be Dean. I hear you’ve been dating Jess.
Dean: Yeah, how do you know her?
Kris: We share a flat on campus.
Dean: So you’d be Kris then, I’ve heard a lot about you. Mostly negative but I’m sure Jess didn’t mean it.
Kris: Oh no, she will have but don’t worry I’m used to it.
Kris got Dean his order, handed it over to him and took the money. Dean didn’t know where to put his face. True he’d only exchanged a few words with Kris but he seemed decent enough. He didn’t know why Jess had such a low opinion of him. Before Dean headed back over to where Jess was sat, Kris told him that he better not mess Jess about, and something else that he didn’t quite catch. Hypocritical maybe, but he didn’t want to see Jess hurt because some guy was taking her for a ride. Dean left Kris at the bar and sat down beside Jess. It was strange how quick someone’s opinion could change. Dean told Jess that he’d met her flatmate, the one that she was always complaining about and that he understood why she found him so annoying. It was true that Jess had said some things she shouldn’t have but Dean had no right to start criticising someone he hardly knew.
Dean: I mean come on, how are you supposed to take someone like that seriously?
Jess: And why would that be?
Dean: I mean the way he dresses, it’s not normal. And he’s way too protective over you. It’s like he’s your dad or something. Either that or he fancies you.
Jess: We’re friends he’s just looking out for me, and what’s wrong with how he dresses?
Dean: He wears women’s clothes; don’t tell me you haven’t noticed.
Jess: So what, it’s not affecting us is it? Anyway what’s the plan for tonight?
Dean: Sorry babe but I’ve got work tonight so it looks like a night on your own.
They’d been sat in the pub for ages and Dean began to get bored, so made an excuse to leave. Jess had offered to go with him but he said that he had to meet up with some of his friends. Jess could tell that he was just saying it and felt hurt, since she’d started going out with Dean she’d been much happier. Now though she was feeling put out that he didn’t want to spend more time with her. He got up leave, but before he went anywhere he kissed Jess on the cheek and made his way for the door. Kris seen the disappointed look on her face and took her over a drink. It was his break and he couldn’t think of anything that he’d rather do than sit with his friend.
Jess: Thanks.
Kris: Don’t mention it. So where’s Dean gone off to?
Jess: Work or something, what did you say to him?
Kris: Nothing, are you suggesting this is my fault?
Jess: Well he started acting all strange after he came back from the bar. I know you served him he told me. Come on tell me what you said.
Kris: I told him that he better not mess you around and –
Jess: How dare you interfere, what gives you the right? I don’t say anything to your boyfriends.
Kris: I was looking out for you. I didn’t mean to scare him off.
Jess: Too late Kris, you did. I’m going home.
And that was it, all the hard work that they’d put into sorting things out had been a complete waste of time and it was all Kris’ fault once again. Why couldn’t he just keep his mouth shut for once in his life? The rest of the day passed slowly, especially for Kris who was stuck behind a bar when he could think of so many other things that he’d rather be doing.
It had been three days since Kris and Jess had fallen out yet again, and the atmosphere was back to how it had been. Awkwardness had once again struck the flat. This time though Zoë wasn’t going to hold back and let them sort it out themselves. Zoë was the first back from her lecture and was waiting for Kris and Jess to get back from theirs. She knew that they would be straight back because she’d text them both and told them she needed to speak to them after their classes. Little did they know though that they’d have to sit in each other’s company and listen to what Zoë had to say? At half past four Jess came in and asked Zoë what was so urgent, but Zoë told her that she’d have to wait. Ten minutes later Kris walked in and Jess went to get up and walk out, but Zoë stopped her. Zoë: No Jess. This is going to get sorted; you’re driving us completely mad. Now sit down the pair of you.
They didn’t have to be told twice, they both knew that Zoë meant business but it didn’t stop them from behaving like a couple of kids. Kris sat at one end of the room and Jess at the other. They both knew that they were being childish but neither of them wanted to back down.
Jess: I’m not talking to him, sorry Zo. Thanks to him I haven’t heard a thing from Dean.
Zoë: Grow up the pair of you. This is stupid.
Kris: No, she’s stupid. She doesn’t know when someone’s trying to look out for her. It’s not my fault that Dean ran off crying.
Zoë: Kris apologise for interfering and Jess you apologise for overacting
Kris: All I did was tell Dean not to take you for a ride. How was I supposed to know he’d do a runner?
Jess: Oh whatever. You were jealous that I’d found a guy that made me happy, unlike you and Nathan.
Zoë: Jess, there’s no need for that. He had your best interests at heart.
Kris: Actually I didn’t, he was far too good looking for her.
Zoë: I don’t believe you two. Listen, I’m going to leave you to talk, but I’m only going to my room so don’t even think about doing a runner.
Jess: I’ve got absolutely nothing to say to THAT, and there’s no way I’m sitting around here all night in ITS company.
Kris: I love you too, you stroppy cow.
Zoë left them both and they sat in silence for about another fifteen minutes before Kris broke the ice. Now it seemed that every time they argued it was Kris that had to make the first move because Jess couldn’t. She was totally incapable of letting her guard down until after Kris because she never knew what he was going to say or where it would lead to.
Kris: If Dean can’t see that you’re worth a bit of grief then he’s obviously not worth it.
Jess: You don’t have to try and make me feel better because it isn’t working.
Kris: I’m not trying to, I’m being serious. I know that I’ve said and done things that have hurt you but I didn’t mean to. I was only trying to look out for you. Honestly.
Jess: So you said, and I accept your apology.
Kris: Good, now give me Dean’s number and I’ll give him a ring for you and sort things out.
Jess: No, its fine. He’s an arrogant prat anyway, too vein if you ask me. You probably did me a favour.
Kris: So what’s with all the fuss, and arguments?
Jess: I was mad. Anyway enough about me how are things between you and Nathan?
Kris: We broke up last week, or weren’t you listening when I told everyone else?
Jess: Was it because of what I said when I crashed your date.
Kris: Partly, but it doesn’t matter we were only ever a bit of fun.
Jess couldn’t believe what she was hearing, but when it came to thinking about it she hadn’t heard any talk of Nathan for a while. Trust her to bring things back up. As Kris went through the details of what had happened, Jess was surprised to find that he wasn’t at all bothered about it. In a way he sounded relieved that he didn’t have to see Nathan’s clingy face every day, and he was. Jess apologised for being selfish when he had other things on his mind, such as the break up, but the only thing that occupied his mind these days was Jess.
In her room Zoë, could hear that they were talking again and decided that it would be safe for her to come out and see them, plus Zak would be back soon and she needed to tell him that she had sorted out everything so there was no need to tip toe around Kris and Jess any longer. Suddenly everything went quiet and it was too much for Zoë to bear, there was no way she could sit in there and wait to find out what was going on. .
Zoë: Sorry for interrupting but I just wanted to grab my phone. Ignore me and carry on with whatever you were doing.
Kris and Jess instantly pulled apart and blushed, they hadn’t meant for that to happen again but for some reason it just seemed right. Every other time had also seemed right but neither of them was prepared to risk their friendship on taking things further. Zoë looked at them and she could see that they looked uncomfortable and Jess in particular looked slightly embarrassed. Pretending not to have noticed she picked up the phone and went straight back to her room out of the way. Kris and Jess sat looking at each other; once again they were lost for words. Jess tried to say something but words failed her and she let Kris speak.
Kris: This shouldn’t have happened. We’re friends and we shouldn’t let anything ruin that.
Jess: Yeah cos another friend is exactly what I need.
Kris: What’s that supposed to mean?
Jess: It’s not like this hasn’t happened before because it has Kris, and it’ll happen again. Have you even stopped to consider that maybe this was meant to happen?
Kris: We couldn’t work, we’re too… different. We’re from totally different worlds.
Jess: It doesn’t matter where we come from Kris, I know how I feel and judging from what just happened I’ve got a pretty good idea of how you feel.
Kris: You haven’t a clue what I feel, and this was a mistake, a moment of passion that shouldn’t have occurred.
Jess: How can you say that?
Kris: That’s just the way it is. I’m sorry if I led you on.
Kris couldn’t look at Jess, he knew that what he was doing was tearing her apart, because he felt it too but he couldn’t jeopardise what they had as friends. What if they had another argument that they couldn’t get over? How would they live together? But suddenly Kris didn’t care all of the doubt and fear was washed away when he realised that this couldn’t keep happening. Jess was right, she was always right; he was just scared of betrayal and rejection.
Kris lifted his head so that he could see Jess sitting beside him and seen the tears that filled her eyes. How could he do this to someone that he cared about so much? Without another word Jess went to get up and go to her room to clean herself up. He allowed her to walk away but he wasn’t far behind. Jess hadn’t realised and pushed the door with such force that Kris shouted in pain.
Jess: Oh my God, I didn’t see you, what are you doing sneaking up on me? I’m sorry; I’ll go and get you some ice.
Kris: Don’t worry about it, I’ll be fine.
Jess: But it’s already starting to swell, and it’ll be even bigger in the morning.
Kris: Just leave it I’m fine.
Zoë who had heard all of the commotion came out of room to see what was going on. Zoë: What happened here? Are you alright Kris?
Kris: Never better, Jess is just helping me rearrange my face. Apparently my dashing good looks aren’t up to much without a black eye to go with them.
Zoë: You should put some ice on that.
Kris: Will the pair of you stop fussing? I don’t need ice. Now Zo if you don’t mind I have to talk to Jess.
Zoë: Fine, Zak text me to go to the SU Bar anyway. I was going to ask if you wanted to come, but never mind.
Jess: Give me half an hour and I’ll be there.
Zoë: How about you Kris? It’ll give you a chance show off that face?
Kris: Great, at least I can honestly say I walked into a door.
Jess: Or I hit you with it, either way.
Zoë: Right then I’m off to meet Zak, two hours in my room was hell, and I need to get out. I’ll see you there.
With that Zoë left them to get on with whatever it was they were doing. Jess kept on fussing about Kris’ face but he didn’t care, true it had hurt him, but he’d probably hurt Jess more and that was what he was more concerned about. Kris stood in front of Jess and took her face in his hands. She went to back away but he stopped her and looked deep into her eyes. This time things were going to be different for the both of them. Jess seen the look on Kris face and ran her fingers over the bruise that was forming around his eye and cheek.
Aware of what she was doing Jess quickly pulled her hand away, and looked away from Kris, who was still staring at her. The anger that she had felt before somehow disappeared and was replaced by warmth that made Jess forget what had happened. When she turned back she noticed that he was still looking at her.
Jess: What’s wrong with you, why are you looking at me like that?
Kris: I don’t know what you’re talking about
Jess: Have I got something wrong with me, something I don’t know about?
Kris: No, sorry I was just thinking.
Jess: Anything I can help you with?
Kris: Why is it that the one person that you really like is out of bounds because of the fear of ruining everything? Why am I so stupid?
Jess: Only you can answer that Kris. Listen I’m going to go and meet Zo at the SU Bar. Are you coming?
Kris: Nah, I think I’ll stay in tonight; I’ve got a lot that needs to be sorted out. Starting with my head. I’ll leave you to get ready.
Jess: Fair enough, you know where we’ll be.
Kris left Jess in her room so that she could freshen up before going to meet the others. He knew that he needed to do more to show Jess how he really felt but he didn’t exactly what to do. As he sat in his room he decided that it would happen n the next few days, he needed to do something and quickly before another ‘Dean’ came along and beat him to it. Even though it was early Kris jumped into bed and tried to sleep, he decided that he might as well get some sleep before the others came in and woke him up.
Jess had been out with Zoë and Zak for a few hours and was starting to feel like a spare part, even though she was joining in the conversation and joking about she still felt like she was intruding. This was one of the many times that Jess wished that Kris was with her. To make her feel better Zoë brought up the topic of shopping, but for some reason it didn’t cheer her up at all. Zak went up to the bar to get another round in; it was really busy as last orders had just been called so it gave Jess an opportunity to have a quick word with Zoë.
Zoë: What’s up Jess?
Jess: I’m so confused, I really like Kris and I thought that he liked me.
Zoë: He does, believe me I can tell.
Jess: Well why can’t he tell me instead of playing stupid games?
Zoë: The same reason you play along with them. How about we go back after this drink, have an early night. Then in the morning talk to Kris.
Jess: You know what I’m gonna get going now. I’m tired and you two could do with a moment to yourselves. I’ve been the third wheel all night.
Zoë: Don’t be stupid, besides there’s nothing going on between us.
Jess: Yeah right Zo, I’m not blind. I’ll see you in the morning.
Zoë: Honestly stay for the last round, we can all go back together.
Jess: Nah I’m tired, tell Zak I’m sorry I didn’t say goodnight.
Zoë: Ok, I’ll see you in the morning. You be careful on your own.
Just as Jess left, Zak came bounding over to the table with three glasses. Zoë told him that Jess had gone home and he smiled, he was glad in a way but he had just wasted money buying her a drink. When he told Zoë she started to laugh at his stupidity. Typical, she thought, their friend was in need of a cheering up and he was complaining about buying and extra drink, especially when he knew that it wouldn’t go to waste.
The next morning Kris woke up quite early, he was shocked that he had slept right through, especially sine the others were out the night before. Usually they would come bounding in making all sorts of racket but he hadn’t heard them at all. As it was early he was hoping that no one would be up so that he could quickly jump into the shower and get dressed before anyone else had the chance to hog the bathroom. When he tried the door though it was locked and he could hear the sound of the water falling from the shower head. He knocked on the door but there was no answer, who ever it was either hadn’t heard him or chose to ignore him. Inside the bathroom was Jess, so the answer was that she had obviously chose to ignore him, she didn’t know who it was but she didn’t care either, they’d just have to wait until she was finished. So that was exactly what he did, making something to eat in the meantime. He was just about to pour a coffee when he seen that the bathroom had been vacated and rushed in before anyone could beat him again but once again he was too slow. This time Zoë had beaten him as she was walking down the corridor. She seen the look on his face and sniggered before slamming the door shut behind her. Since he’d missed out again he went back to pouring the coffee that he had already started on and pulled out another cup for Jess who sat down at the breakfast bar.
Jess: Told you that would be worse this morning, you should have put the ice on it.
Kris: It’ll save on the make up.
Jess started to laugh at his comment, typical Kris. He always had a way to look on the bright side, even if it wasn’t really that bright. Jess felt awkward sitting the way she was but she knew that if she wanted Kris as a friend she’d have to get used to it.
Jess: Does it hurt?
Kris: Not really, so did you have a good time last night?
Jess: It wasn’t too bad, you should have come.
Kris: And watch Zak and Zoë flirting all night, no thanks.
Jess: Yeah well I felt like a right moron sat there with them. At least I wouldn’t have been alone.
Kris: Funny you look like one. (Jess hit Kris across the back of the head) Why don’t you just tell me to turn around so you can give me a matching pair?
Jess: That’s not a bad idea, turn around.
When Kris turned around he found Jess sitting with an orange in her hand and ready to throw it. Of course she wasn’t really going to hit him with it, but he wasn’t to know. Quickly he grabbed her arm and the fruit dropped to the floor. Not because he had used any force, but at his touch, Jess could feel herself going weak and tried to shake it off by turning her attention to something else. Kris could see that she was avoiding making eye contact and turned her head so that he was looking directly into her eyes.
Jess: I have to go and get ready.
Kris: No you have to stay here with me,
Jess: Don’t do this to me Kris, I can’t handle it anymore. I’m tired of playing your games.
Kris: Me too, I want you Jess, and it scares me how much.
Jess: If this is another one of those mind games then play on your own.
Kris: Its not. I promise.
Jess: I need to go and get ready. I need to think.
Kris: I’ll be waiting.
No matter what Kris said Jess wasn't prepared for it. She knew exactly what she wanted but she had to be sure that it was what he wanted as well. There was no way that she could start a relationship with someone that didn't feel the same for her as she felt for them. The only way she could be sure was to wait, and to see how long he was prepared to wait for her. If he wanted her that much then he'd hold out as ong as it took, which was exactly what he was prepared to do
Days had passed since Jess had her encounter with Kris. She still wasn’t sure what to make of it; she needed to be sure that he wasn’t playing another one of his games. What she didn’t know though was how long it would take for her to realise that he was being serious for once. With the term coming to an end soon Jess had some serious thinking to do. There was no way that she could leave without seeing how things would go between them. So almost a week later Jess decided that she was ready to listen to Kris and stop tiptoeing around to avoid him. Jess had told Zoë everything that had happened who told Jess that she was a fool for not giving in sooner. If Zoë was in the same position she wouldn’t have had to think about it, she would have gone with her instinct in the first place. In order to talk to Kris, Jess had begged Zoë and Zak to go out. At first they were a bit reluctant but when they found out why they were more than happy to clear off, on the condition that Jess supplied the first round of drinks. At half past seven Zak and Zoe were sat in the SU Bar when Kris wandered in, they looked shocked, why wasn’t he at the flat with Jess. Zoe called him over and started the interrogation.
Zoe: What are you doing here?
Kris: Having a drink, is it a crime?
Zoe: Of course not.
Zak: What she means is get back to the flat.
Kris: What are you guys my parents?
Zak: Jess is waiting for you to get back; she wants to talk to you.
Zoe: She text you earlier telling you to meet her at seven.
Kris: My phone’s broke; some idiot spilt a pint on it last night. She’s gonna think I’ve deliberately stood her up.
Zoe: Just tell her the truth.
Kris: Thanks guys. I’ll erm, I’ll be off now.
Zak: Good luck mate.
Kris made his way back to the flat as fast as he could but there was no sign of Jess in the living room or kitchen. Silently he walked along the hall and stopped outside of her bedroom door, instantly knowing that she was inside. He thought about knocking but didn’t bother, instead he walked straight in. Jess was lying on her bed with tears spilling from her eyes. When she heard the door close she looked up and wiped the tears away. She didn’t want him to see her like that anymore, she had to be strong.
Jess: Leave me alone.
Kris: I’m sorry, really I am. My phone –
Jess: Sorry doesn’t work anymore; you say it so much that it’s lost all meaning so save your excuses Kris, I don’t need them, now leave me alone.
Kris: Just hear me out. Please
Jess: Why should I?
Kris: Because you need to know what happened.
Jess: You’ve got five minutes.
Kris: My mobiles broke some absolute idiot decided to throw his pint over it last night so I didn’t get your message. I only found out you text me ten minutes ago. I went to the SU Bar and the others told me that you had sent me a text.
As he was telling Jess what had happened he made his way over to where she was sitting and sat down beside her. This was the closest that they’d been all week and Jess had a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach but she knew that it wasn’t a bad feeling.
Jess: Why should I believe a word you say?
Kris: Because I’m telling the truth, and I’ve already hurt you more than I thought possible. I don’t want it to be like this anymore Jess.
Jess: Me neither.
Kris: Am I forgiven or do I have to grovel? Just remember I don’t do grovelling
Jess: Actually grovelling sounds good, and it’s the least you could do after putting me through a week of hell.
Kris: I know and I’m sorry but you said that you needed time to think about everything.
Jess: I’ve never had to question what it is that I want Kris, I had to be sure that it wasn’t a one sided thing. I needed to know that you want this too.
Kris: And do you?
Jess: I think so,
Kris couldn’t keep his hands to him self any longer, he took Jess’ face in his hands and kissed her with such urgency and passion. It was as though he had been waiting a lifetime for this to happen and in all honesty that was how the past week seemed. Like an eternity.
Kris: How about now?
Jess: Still a little cloudy
Kris: Don’t push it Harris.
Jess: Or what?
Kris: I’ll make you pay for it.
Jess: I’m sure you will.
Kris: But how about we go out for a bite to eat first, then we can talk some more.
Jess: I’m broke
Kris: And I’m buying. Come on get ready. Its time we had a laugh and a good gossip.
Jess: I’ve missed this you know.
Kris: And I’ve missed you, now get ready before I change my mind.
Jess went to her room to change her clothes but didn’t bother; instead she just touched up her make up and came out a few minutes later. Kris was gob smacked, in all the time he’d known her she’d never been that quick even if it was only her make up that was changing. Not only was he amazed at her speed but also at her beauty. She was beautiful but not like any of the other girls that Kris had been with before. When he didn’t say anything to her Jess tapped him on the shoulder and asked him if he was alright. Of course he was, in fact he was more than alright he was alone with the girl of his dreams, what more could he ask for?
Jess: Ready to go?
Kris: I’m always ready.
Jess: Come on then, let’s go.
Kris took Jess’ hand and led her out if the flat and to the SU Bar, before they went in though Jess slipped her hand out of Kris’ and walked in ahead of him. He felt slightly hurt and upset, he didn’t know why she had done it, but came to the conclusion that Jess was ashamed of him. Determined to find out he hurried so that he was now walking along side her and took her hand again. This time she didn’t pull away, Kris smiled to himself and then over to Zak and Zoë who were sat in the far corner. Jess waved over before she went and ordered a round of drinks with Kris then took them over to where their friends were sat.
Zoë: So you two look happy, everything sorted?
Jess: I think so.
Kris: What do you mean think, what did I warn you Harris?
Jess: You’re all talk Fisher.
Zak: C’mon guys calm down. We’re all friends here.
Kris: Go and watch the football or something Zak.
Jess let out a burst of laughter; she couldn’t believe how stupid Zak was being. Kris also laughed at hi stupidity and Zoë made a sarcastic comment about it not being Zak’s fault that he was a little slow. Zak who hadn’t followed any of it was totally bewildered, he didn’t have a clue what was going on so decided it would be better to keep his mouth shut. As the night went on Kris and Jess didn’t make it for something to eat, instead they sat with the others and had a good drink. On the way home Jess fell over and hurt her leg so Kris and Zak had to prop her up so that she didn’t fall again. Zak was glad when they eventually made it back; all the way he had to listen to a drunken Jess flirt with Kris, who was also a tad drunk. Zoë on the other hand had made her way back perfectly all right and she was the drunkest of them all. Kris steered Jess towards her room and she fell on her bed. As he went to leave she pulled him at his arm and he fell on top of her.
Kris: (standing up) Jess, is this a good idea? Jess: What do you mean; you said it’s what you wanted before.
Kris: It is, but you’re drunk.
Jess: Am not!
Kris: Yes you are. I’ll see you in the morning Princess
Jess: What, not even a goodnight kiss?
Jess sat up and Kris knelt beside her and kissed her cheek. He knew that she wouldn’t be satisfied with that but he got up and made his way to the door. Just as he was about to close the door behind him he opened it back up and turned to her. This time when he kissed her it was filled with passion and warmth and Jess’ face lit up.
Kris: You didn’t think I’d go without a proper goodnight did you?
As it turned out Kris didn’t make it to his bed that night, Jess just wouldn’t let him go. Every time he stood up Jess pulled him back down on to the bed. The same thing happened about four or five times before he decided that it would be easier to give in. However nothing happened, as much as Jess wanted it to Kris wouldn’t. He spent the time he was awake just watching her, of course Jess felt a bit self conscious but Kris told her that she was being stupid. She was beautiful, and he was transfixed by how beautiful she really was. Before she turned to go to sleep she kissed Kris again and he wrapped his arms around her and she fell asleep. Kris was still fully dressed but he couldn’t move because he knew that he’d wake Jess up and she’d just managed to fall asleep.
When Kris woke up the next morning he had the most painful sensation in his arm. It was completely dead at first but when the feeling was regained he wished that he couldn’t feel anything at all. Jess was still asleep but Kris needed to pull himself from under her, he tried to as gently as he could but it was no good, he woke her but she wasn’t bothered. It just meant that she had more time to spend with the gorgeous Mr Fisher.
Kris: Sorry I woke you.
Jess: Don’t be daft I’ve got a lecture later anyway; it’ll give me a chance to get ready and get rid of this headache.
Kris: Aww poor Jess. That’ll teach you to drink too much.
Jess: No it won’t, it never does.
Kris: True, listen I’m gonna go and make breakfast. If you’re lucky there might be some for you.
Jess: I’ll pass thanks Gordon. I’ll grab something from Il Gnosh.
Kris: You sure, I’m making my speciality? Jess: I’m positive; I couldn’t eat beans on toast again.
Kris: Well at least I offered.
Jess: Yes and I’m grateful but there’s only so much a girl can take. Right I’m off for my shower, I’ll meet you for lunch in The Dog.
Kris: Ok then, I'll see you then.
Kris got up off the bed and made his way into the kitchen to make something to eat while Jess was in the shower. She knew that he’d be gone before she had finished so had already said her goodbye. The one thing that she really wanted to say though just wouldn’t come out.
Jess went to here lecture which was totally boring, all the way through she kept on thinking about what she could have been doing instead. Of course there was only one person on her mind. No prizes for guessing who. There wasn’t that long left until she would be able to see him. With about half an hour left in her class, Jess got up and walked out. She didn’t want to be there so she headed back to the flat and changed for her lunch date with Kris. Kris however didn’t have a class; he was at work serving stroppy customers in The Dog, always a pleasure. He was also looking forward to lunchtime, until Darren told him that he needed him to stay on for another hour. Typical, there was always something that stood in the way of him being with Jess. Kris told Darren that he had plans, but Darren didn’t care. He never cared as long as people did what he wanted. Reluctantly Kris agreed to the extra shift and text Jess to let her know what was happening. When Jess received the text a frown worked its way across her face, something that she hadn’t thought wouldn’t happen on that particular day. When she had woken up she didn’t think that anything would wipe the smile that seemed to be fixed to her face. Just as Jess emerged from her room after getting changed, Zoë came into the flat. She had also been in a lecture, unlike Jess though she had sat through the whole two hours and enjoyed it. Perhaps the fact that it was Film made it more enjoyable. Zoë had nothing planned for lunch and asked Jess if she fancied going for a drink and a chat. They needed a catch up and they could always go to the Dog and have a gossip with Kris when he wasn’t busy. Jess pulled on her coat, grabbed her bag and left for the Dog with Zoë beside her. Kris seen them instantly and flashed a smile at them which they returned and sat down at a table not far away from the bar.
Zoë: So how are things between you and Kris after last night?
Jess: Fantastic. He’s not the same person he was a few weeks ago. He’s kind and caring and considerate and …
Zoë: Are you sure this is Kris you’re talking about?
Jess: Who else would I be talking about? You know I didn’t think he’d hang around for me to decide whether or not I wanted him.
Zoë: Obviously he really, really likes you. And as I’m finding out he’s full of surprises is our Kris.
Jess: I really like him as well… quick say something else here he comes.
Zoë: Are you doing anything tonight?
Jess: I’m not sure, why? Oh thanks Kris
Kris: No problem, I’m sorry about lunch, how about dinner?
Zoë: Looks like tonight is just me and some of the girls from my course.
Jess: I haven’t agreed to anything yet Zo. What have you got in mind?
Kris: I’m not taking no for an answer so forget about Zoë and her plans. I’ll meet you at seven in the dorms.
Zoë: Looks like you’re sorted then doesn’t it?
Jess: It sure does. Now you get back behind that bar before the boss gets back.
Kris walked back over to the bar and served the customers that had gathered while he was over with the girls. As soon as he’d cleared them he watched Zoë and Jess and couldn’t help but smile. Zoë started up the conversation that they’d stopped and tried to drag some more out of Jess.
Zoë: You’re falling for him aren’t you?
Jess: No, of course not.
Zoë: Don’t deny it Jess, you can’t stop talking about him, and your face lights up whenever he’s around.
Jess: That’s because you keep asking me questions and it doesn’t. I smile at all of my friends. See.
Jess put on the cheesiest grin and directed it straight at Zoë who laughed at her. She knew that Zoë was right, she had fallen for Kris, she hadn’t meant to but she had. No matter how much she tried to deny it, she knew that it was useless.
Later on that afternoon Jess was in her room getting ready when there was a knock on her door. She hadn’t realised that there was anyone else around, she knew that Zoë had a class but wasn’t sure about the other two. On the other side of the door was Kris. He was stood with a smile on his face and a bunch of flowers in his had. When Jess opened the door a smile spread across her face, the same happened to Kris.
Jess: So I take it Darren let you go
Kris: He didn’t have a choice. What you up to?
Jess: Well let’s see; I’m standing in my dressing gown, hair half dried. What do you think I’m doing?
Kris: Well if that’s your attitude, I’ll keep these, and give them to someone else.
Jess: What’ve you done that’s so bad it calls for flowers, you never buy anyone flowers, it’s just not you.
Kris: I thought it was time for a change but if you’d prefer me to go back to the old Kris I will. Perhaps Zo would appreciate them.
Jess: No, no I’ll have them they’re beautiful, thank you.
Kris: I’m glad you like them.
They were still stood in the doorway of Jess’ room when Kris looked at his watch. It was ten past five so not long left until their date. He looked up at Jess, kissed her on the forehead and went to his own room without another word. Jess stayed exactly where she was for about ten minutes; she had the flowers in her hand and a distant look on her face. She was so distant that she didn’t even hear Zak talking to her. He had been stood there for a few moments and waved his hand in front of her face, but still she didn’t see him. It wasn’t until that he nudged her that she acknowledged the fact that he was there.
Zak: What’s wrong with you?
Jess: Nothing, I was just thinking.
Zak: About Kris I take it?
Jess: Why would you say that?
Zak: You haven’t taken your eyes from off his door, is he in there Jess, or is the door that interesting? Nice flowers by the way.
Jess: Yeah, Kris gave me them. Obviously he’s due to mess up and this is his apology.
Zak: Or he saw them and thought of you. I know it’s not a typical Kris gesture but he’s not all bad.
Jess: I know, he’s taking me out tonight
Zak: Well maybe you should go and get yourself ready, unless you’re planning on going like that.
Jess remembered that she was only part way through drying her hair and rushed back inside after Zak went back through into the living area and turned on the TV and waited for Zoë to get back, he knew that she wouldn’t be long.
About an hour later Zoë came strolling through the door, she looked exhausted. Zak got up and handed her a beer from the fridge, which she gratefully accepted and they both slumped down on the sofa.
Zak: Tough day?
Zoë: You could say that, I’ve had to redo all of my coursework, the lecturer "misplaced" it, I'm sure she's got in in for me.
Zak: I'm sure she hasn't, didn't you have a backup?
Zoë: No, I only had the original and the images I used but I had to put them all back together and edit them into a montage or something.
Zak: Awww sounds like you could do with a night in and a few cans. How about it?
Zoë: Sounds great, and it’s just us two tonight so no arguments.
Zak: Yeah, Jess told me about Kris; and get this, he bought her flowers this afternoon.
Zoë: Kris. Flowers. Nah.
Zak: He did.
Zoë: There’s no way Kris Fisher would…
Kris: Would do what Zo, or was I not meant to hear you screaming my name at the top of your voice?
Zoë: Nothing, hey you look good. Where you taking Jess?
Kris: I’m not sure.
Zoë: I hope you’re joking because you’re meant to be leaving in half an hour.
Kris: I was thinking of going into town. I don’t really want to take her to her workplace.
Zak: Alright who are you and where’s Kris?
Zoë: Shut up Zak, I think that’s nice, shows you care about her. I bet other guys wouldn’t have a second thought about going to Il Gnosh. Why don’t you take her dancing and then go for a meal.
Kris: Yeah but where?
Zoë: I’m sure you could find somewhere.
By this point of the conversation Zak had tuned out and went back to watching the television. He wasn’t really that interested about it as it didn’t concern him. Besides he could hear the football calling out to him. While Kris and Zoë were talking there was a sudden outburst that neither of them had been expecting, Zak had started up his conversation with the TV again. Occasionally they threw peculiar looks at him but he didn’t seem to notice. As seven o’clock approached Jess came out of her room looking flawless. She had a knee length, green halter neck dress with silver shoe and clutch bag to match. The dress fitted her perfectly and she finished off the effect with a silver necklace with a large heart pendant attached. Her make up was also done to perfection, and her hair was loosely pinned back in curls. All eyes turned to Jess, even Zak had managed to tear his eyes away from the television, and she became self conscious, and thought that there was something wrong with what she had on.
Zoë: You look great Jess
Jess: Thanks Zo, do I erm, have something on me?
Zak: Sorry I’m not following
Jess: You’re all staring at me.
Kris: That’s because you look amazing.
Jess: Thanks. You look, different.
Kris: I was waiting for that one. I thought that I’d stand aside and let you shine tonight. It’s harder than it looks so I’ve decided to give myself the night off.
Zak nudged Zoë as if to say ‘I told you so’ and she just whacked his arm, instantly knowing exactly what he was going on about. They both started to laugh which confused Kris and Jess but they knew that it was probably best if they didn’t know what the others were going on about. Kris picked up his coat, Jess did the same and they left the halls for a night on the town.
Once out of the flat Kris led Jess towards Il Gnosh but they didn’t go in instead they walked straight past and on until they reached a taxi office. Jess gave Kris a confused look and asked him where they were going. All that he told her though was that they were not going to be spending the night in the village. He wanted to take her away from the sights that she had to endure everyday. Admittedly she was surprised but then she began to realise that these days Kris just kept on amazing her. They only waited for a taxi for a few moments before one pulled up in front of them and took them right into the heart of Chester’s nightlife. The first place they went to was fairly quiet and not what Jess had expected at all. Kris went over to the bar and ordered them a couple of drinks and took then to the table that Jess had found.
Jess: Kris, what are we doing here?
Kris: Just wait, it’s still early yet. I think you’ll like it here.
Jess: Ok.
Half an hour had passed and the club was starting to fill up, that was when the music began and the dance floor was filled with young couples. Jess couldn’t believe it, this place was great. The dancing that was going on wasn’t just any kind of dancing it was Latin. Jess had never been Latin dancing before and either had Kris but they could tell that they were going to enjoy themselves. It wasn’t long before they were both on the floor dancing away; already they had attempted the salsa, cha cha and the rumba. Even though they didn’t really have a clue what they were doing they had a great time. As they danced they were only centimetres apart and the sexual tension was unbearable. Jess had to make an excuse to go to the toilet a few times because it was all getting way too much for her. Kris could also feel it, but he was quite comfortable and wanted something to happen, but every time they got a little too close Jess backed off. Kris wasn’t sure why but he didn’t mind he knew that if something was meant to happen it would, as it usually did. After a few dances Kris got the message that it was all getting too much for Jess and suggested that they go home. Jess was disappointed but relieved all at the same time. She didn’t think that she could bear to have Kris’ hands all over her and not getting anywhere any longer. As they left the club the cold air hit Jess’ skin, it was just what she needed after so much heat inside. She didn’t want to hang around for a taxi to appear in between jobs like they usually did so asked Kris if they could walk to the nearest taxi office or get the bus. Again Kris was shocked at her, he had planned to go out for something to eat, but when he mentioned it she said that she’d rather just grab a pizza on the way home. It looked as though the whole having no money was starting to get Jess used to the student life after all.
Kris: What’ve you done with Jess?
Jess: Excuse me?
Kris: Well tonight you’re not the same person. You’re –
Jess: What down to earth? I’m just like anyone else really.
Kris: No you’re not, you’re totally different. That’s what I like about you Jess, you aren’t afraid to be yourself.
Jess: That’s because it’s easy when I’m with you.
Kris: C’mon lets walk a bit faster before you freeze to death.
They both hurried along the road until they reached a small building with a taxi sign on the side. Outside there were four or five cars so they didn’t have any trouble getting a cab straight home. The journey only took about twenty minutes. In the back of the cab Jess snuggled up to Kris and he wrapped his arm around her. Once they got back Jess pulled herself away and made for the flat while Kris paid the driver, he then hurried to catch up to Jess. Before they entered Kris stopped Jess and turned her to face him. It was now or never, they had skirted it all night and now it just had to happen. Slowly he leant in and his lips soon met hers. There was no denying how good it felt. Jess was the first to pull away, at first Kris thought that maybe the whole thing had been a mistake but then she kissed him and he knew that it was what she wanted. These days it was just so hard to tell what was going on in the others mind; especially after all they’d been through. As quietly as they could they made their way inside, it wasn’t late but they didn’t want to disrupt the others who were cuddled up on the sofa with a heap of cans in front of them. Zak seen them but Zoe was asleep. Jess wasn’t tired but she went to her room and took off her shoes and jewellery and let down her hair. Kris wasn’t far behind her, he had plenty more to say to her and he was sure she would have something to say to him.
Before he went into the room he knocked on the door, just to make sure that she decent. He knew that if he barged in and she was half naked that she would freak out. Usually it wouldn’t have bothered him but now things were different, he had a new found respect for Jess. When Jess opened the door to him she asked what he wanted but he didn’t say anything. Jess asked him again, but still he was silent, just as she was about to close the door on him he stopped it and walked in the room. Jess had no option but to stand aside. Again she looked at him but his face was blank, then he indicated for her to shut the door, what ever he wanted to say he wanted it to be private. Jess looked at him innocently, this time he smiled at her.
Jess: Kris, are you going to tell me what’s going on, I’m trying to get changed here.
Kris: Who’s stopping you?
Jess: You are.
Kris: It’s not like I haven’t seen it before now is it?
Jess: That was different.
Kris: And I thought we were meant to be different after last night.
Jess: We are, I mean we haven’t argued yet, and we had a good night out together.
Kris: Good? It was perfect just the two of us. I know that last night I backed off, but that’s because I didn’t want you to regret anything, you were drunk.
Jess: Are you saying what I think you are?
Once again Kris went all silent, but he didn’t stand still, this time he got up and stood right in front of her. Jess knew exactly what was coming and her stomach started to do back flips. Gently he took her face in his hands and kissed her. It didn’t just stop there though, before they knew it they were both on the bed tearing at each others clothes. They couldn’t help themselves as the passion and desire took over them. Before it went too far Kris made sure that this was what Jess wanted but she didn’t say a word, instead she kissed him harder and started unbuttoning his shirt, while he slid her dress further up, but it wasn’t long before the clothes were strewn across the floor and they were lost in each other and Kris hadn’t said any of the things that he had planned on saying. They’d just have to wait until later.
The next morning Kris woke up with Jess lying beside him. It was a happy moment but it was short lived as he realised that he had to get up and go to class. He hadn’t gone in yesterday because he’d been roped into extra shifts at The Dog, so he had to go in today. He got up as carefully and as quietly as he could. Kris knew that Jess didn’t have any classes until later on and she could probably use the extra sleep. Before he made it out of the door she started to stir but she wasn’t awake, he stopped dead in his tracks and waited, just to make sure that she wasn’t awake. However as soon as her was out of the room he made a bit more noise but it couldn’t be helped, there was all sorts of things that had been thrown about, and he didn’t have a clue where they came from. As he stood on a small, green piece of plastic he let out a load moan. As soon as he did it he realised that he would’ve probably woken everyone else in the flat, after all it wasn’t exactly sound proof. Without any more hesitation he ran into his bedroom and got dressed for the day. It took him about twenty minutes to get dressed, and when he came out of his room he found the one person that he’d tried not to wake, making coffee in the kitchen
Jess: What did you do this time?
Kris: I have no idea what you’re going on about.
Jess: Well whatever it was I think you woke the whole village
Kris: Oh that, I trampled on something coming out of your door.
Jess: Serves you right for trying to sneak off without saying goodbye to me.
Kris: I didn’t want to wake you, you looked so peaceful. Besides you didn’t have to get up to go out, so enjoy the rest.
Jess: Aren’t you a reformed character, I think I liked the old Kris better. At least he had a bit of fight in him.
Kris: It hasn’t left me yet Jessica. I’m just happy at the moment.
Jess: And why would that be?
Kris: Well I had the most amazing night, with a beautiful girl. You tell me why I shouldn’t be happy. Bye Jess.
Jess continued to drink her coffee; and Kris left, making her the only one up. She hated sitting alone but at least it was peaceful, or so she thought. A few minutes later the door flew open and Kris was back. He hadn’t even made it to the end of the corridor when he’d decided to turn back and go home.

Zoë: Are you going to tell her?
Kris: Yes…No…Maybe, I don’t know
Zoë: Do it
Kris: Fine, I’ll go.
Without any more hesitation Kris went to see Jess, he had to say it now before he backed out again. Jess was in the middle of doing her hair as soon as she heard the door she spun around to see Kris. Of course it was him, he was the only one that just went straight in without a second thought. Jess was about to say something when Kris began.
Kris: Jess, about what Zoë said out there…
Jess: Come on that’s just Zoë being Zoë. We both know what she’s like and she’s still half cut from last night.
Kris: So you didn’t take any notice of her?
Jess: Of course not. Now come on what’s up?
Kris: I just wanted to tell you that she’s right. I do love you, more than you’ll ever know.
Jess stood speechless, she’d waited to hear those words for what seemed like a life time. However the look on her face must have said something else because Kris started spouting some speech about how she felt about him. He told her that he understood if she didn’t feel the same way because they’d just started dating, and then some other rubbish that he thought up.
Jess: Are you going to shut up for one moment?
Kris: I was just saying that –
Jess: No you were talking rubbish and making assumptions. Kris you don’t have to say any of this, I love you too, you idiot.
Kris: You do?
Jess: Of course I do you moron.
Kris: That’s it, now is officially payback time.
Jess didn’t have a clue what he had in mind until he picked up one of her lipsticks from off the dressing table and started chasing her around the flat with it. Zoë laughed at them but couldn’t sit around watching them that long, they were far too noisy and loved up for her. After a while of chasing her, Jess gave in and slumped down onto the sofa, she was so out of shape. Kris decided that he would sit down beside her and pretended to put the lipstick away, however when she wasn't looking he pulled it back into view and started rubbing in across her face until Jess could take no more. Both of them were in hysterics, especially Kris as he took the pleasure of treasuring the moment with a photograph on Jess’ phone.
Just then Zak came out of his room and gave the pair of them a strange look and then shook his head. He didn’t even want to know what they had been doing but it was obvious by the state of Jess’ face.
Jess: Morning lazy.
Zak: Morning, had an accident with your lipstick eh?
Kris: Her hand was a bit shaky this morning, isn’t that right Jessica?
Jess: More like I was attacked, you’re lucky it wasn’t one of my good ones.
Zak: Is this where you both go all starry eyed and make me sick?
Kris: Is little Zakky jealous?
Zak: No but I’d like to have my breakfast before the pair of you get all soppy.
Jess: I don’t do soppy; in case you’ve forgotten I’m made of ice.
Kris: Did you hear that Zak, Jess tried to cracked a joke. Not a very funny one, but a joke none the less.
Jess punched Kris’ arm and Zak watched in amusement. He always found it entertaining to watch the two of them whether they were arguing or just carrying on with each other, they were so different to any other couple he’d come across. Zak poured out some cereal and went and sat down on a chair in front of the television, which had already been tuned into some sports show or something. Either way neither Kris nor Jess took any notice. Since there was nothing better to do and she looked a mess Jess stood up and made her way to the bathroom to clear her face of the bright red lipstick that Kris had painted her with. He had been half tempted to follow her and help but he didn’t want to seem any soppier than he already was. In the bathroom Jess could hear Kris and Zak talking to each other, they were talking about her and Kris amongst other things.
Zak: You’ve got it bad mate.
Kris: Yeah well you’re only jealous that you haven’t got anyone.
Zak: No I’m not. And I didn’t mean it to sound like a bad thing. It’s about time you got it together. We all knew it would happen eventually, we just don’t know why it took so long. Never mind though, better late than never.
Kris: Thanks for that Zak; I never had you down as an adviser or anything in that field.
Zak: Full of surprises me, just like my footy team.
Kris: Ok now you’ve lost me. Talk about anything but football and I’ll understand. I’m more of a theatrical student.
Zak: Yeah you can say that again. Being you must be a bucket full of laughs. Every day’s like being in an episode of Brookside or something.
Kris: At least I’d bring in the viewing figures, which is more than I can say for you mate. Anyway what’s going on with you and Zoe?
Zak: Nothing we’re just friends at the moment. I really like her and all that but you know how it is. I take it your night out with Jess went well, especially from what I heard anyway.
Kris: It was even better than that, we had the most amazing night. I can’t believe how much that girl has changed me. Before I came here I was an arrogant, pig headed slob without a thought for anyone else –
Zak: And what’s changed then because you’re still all of the above.
Kris: But now I have someone to think about, to care about and love. I’ve got Jess.
Jess: Doesn’t he say the sweetest things?
Kris: How long have you been there?
Zak: Obviously long enough to hear what you just said.
Jess sat down across Kris’ lap and wrapped her arms around him, Zak thought that they were going to get all soppy again and stared making faces at them. Kris who was slightly amused at him threw a cushion over that knocked his bowl hands. Luckily it was empty as Zak was waiting for the adverts to come on the TV before he moved anywhere.
Later that day Kris, Jess, Zoë and Zak were all sat in the SU Bar having a drink. It was the first time that they’d all been out for a proper drink and catch up for a while. Naturally Kris and Jess were stuck together making the other two feeling slightly uncomfortable. Since there was no sign of them tearing themselves away from each other Zoë and Zak took their drinks over to the pool table and waited until the current match was finished. As they played they got to talking and although they knew each other well, they were beginning to find out a whole lot more. Kris who had spotted them out of the corner of his eye pointed them out to jess who started to watch them, occasionally throwing in the odd comment.
Jess: How come when it comes to other people they’re the first to stick their noses in and see what is going on, but when it comes to them they’re blind?
Kris: I suppose they could say the same about us.
Jess: Yeah but come on, those two are so obvious. At least we masked it with arguments.
Kris: No we didn’t, that was just us you daft cow. Those two have the conventional relationship. We’re just weird, and want the things we think are out of reach.
Jess: We can do conventional, just look at us now not an argument for the past 48 hours at least.
In the middle of taking her shot, Zoë heard Kris shouting something over. She didn’t quite catch all of what he’d said but enough to know what he meant. It made her smile but blush a little. She knew what she wanted and Kris had told her to make sure she got it but of course in a more of a Kris Fisher way. Zak however hadn’t heard a word; he was far too busy concentrating on the game. Zoë could feel herself getting redder and redder and made an excuse to go to the toilet. As soon as Kris seen her head in that direction he sent Jess in to talk to her. The girl needed help to see what was on offer right under her nose.
Jess: What’s wrong with you, you look as though you’ve got sunburn.
Zoe: It’s that bloody boyfriend of yours. Can’t you keep him under control?
Jess: Don’t let it get to you. Ignore him.
Zoe: It’s not as easy as that. I know Kris is right; I should go all out to get him but I can’t. I want to but I can’t Jess.
Jess: Why not, you’re young, free and single, as is he.
Zoe: I know but when it comes to things like this I’m not that good at telling people how I feel. I’d appreciate it if you asked Kris not to say anything to Zak, and if this conversation stayed between the two of us.
Jess: Of course it will and I’ll talk to Kris, tell him to keep his mouth shut. What he does after that though God only knows.
Zoe: Thanks Jess, I better get back out there before Zak thinks I’ve done a runner or something.
Jess and Zoë left the toilets laughing and talking like they always did. It was nice to have someone that you could talk to, and trust that they wouldn’t tell anyone else, because Jess knew that what Zoë had just told her had to be kept from Kris. She knew that it wouldn’t be easy but she couldn’t betray her friend. Kris had just ordered another round of drinks in at the bar and had given Zak his and Zoë’s and took the other two back to the table where Jess was sat waiting.
Kris: Did she say anything?
Jess: Only that you were embarrassing her. She felt really uncomfortable Kris, and I promised her that I’d tell you to keep your mouth shut so do it.
Kris: Or else?
Jess: There’ll be trouble, and I mean it. You say anything to upset her and that’s it we’re finished.
Kris: Ok, ok, I’ll keep quiet, but if Zak asks for any advice I have to give it. It’s my duty as an agony uncle.
Jess: I’m serious Kris, if you don’t believe me just do it.
Kris had never heard Jess talk like this before and he didn’t like it, not one bit. He didn’t see why helping out his friends should result in the loss of his girlfriend. There was no denying his shock, but something told him that Jess really did mean everything she said and he loved her too much to risk losing her over some stupid attraction between Zoë and Zak
Kris: Jess, do you fancy going into town?
Jess: What for?
Kris: I need to replace my phone, I can’t go around borrowing for the rest of my life.
Jess: Would you mind if I went home and you went alone?
Kris: Of course not, I’ll see you when I get back.
Jess: I’ll be waiting for you so don’t even think about avoiding me.
Kris: Like I’d ever do that, you’ll end up wishing that you’d never met me.
Jess: Somehow I seriously doubt that. Now you go before I make you come home with me.
Kris: Well, if you put it like that a new phone could wait until tomorrow
Jess: No you go. I’m going to say goodbye to the others. I’ll see you when you get back.
Jess kissed Kris goodbye and headed over to the pool table to tell the others she was going home. Zoë asked her to stay out but Jess said that she had an essay due in for the next day. Zak also wanted her to stay out with them; it would have taken away the awkwardness that was building between him and Zoë if there was someone else there. Kris watched Jess leave waving to her until she reached the exit. As soon as she was gone he ran over to the pool table to have a talk with Zoë, but Zak was there. To get rid of him Kris sent him over to the bar that was extremely busy so he should be a while, unfortunately that wasn’t the case as he came back just a few moments later so Kris didn’t have a chance to say anything at all. When Kris said that he was also leaving Zak said that he’d tag along with him, if it wasn’t a problem. They asked Zoë if she wanted to go or if she minded Zak going. Of course she said no, but it was purely out of politeness. Zak felt guilty for ditching her but she said I was fine and decided that she would go and catch up with Jess again and give her a hand. Kris was glad that Zoë had opted out of going with them because it would give him the opportunity to speak to Zak instead; he knew that Zak wouldn’t run telling tales to Jess.
Kris and Zak were on the bus into Chester when Kris started asking him questions about him and Zoë. He wanted to know all sorts but Zak wasn’t giving anything away. To tell the truth he wasn’t sure that there was anything to actually tell Kris, but it went without saying that Kris was determined to set them up, regardless of the consequences. The bus came to a stop at the main station in Chester and Kris and Zak got off, and made their way to the nearest phone shop. Kris wasn’t bothered about the actual phone; all he cared about was the price and the terms and conditions of the contracts. They only looked at a few handsets before Kris settled on one. The phone itself wasn’t too bad, but the price was even better, £20 a month for a reasonable contract. As he’d got what he went for Kris decided to have a drink before they went back, and this gave him the perfect opportunity to get some more out of Zak.
Kris: I’ll never understand you two.
Zak: Who?
Kris: You and Zoë, you obviously fancy the pants off each other but you won’t do anything about it.
Zak: Pot. Kettle and black spring to mind there mate.
Kris: But I went for it, you should as well.
Zak: I don’t want to take advantage of her, what if it ruins our friendship?
Kris: Life’s full of what ifs Zak. Why don’t you look at it like this “What if I don’t go for it with Zoë and someone else does?” how would you feel then, wishing that you had of went for it and regretting it until the next given opportunity?
Zak: You know what mate, you’re right. I’m gonna tell her that she’s the most beauti –
Kris: Ok you can save that for her to hear, no need to waste it on me. And if Jess asks I never said a word, alright?
Zak: Don’t you want any acknowledgement or praise?
Kris: I wouldn’t mind it but I kind of promised that I wouldn’t say anything to either of you. And when I say promised I mean I was threatened.
Zak: Don’t worry my lips are sealed. Now I think we should have another drink before we get back to the girls, how about you?
Kris: Yeah, great.
Zak: What you waiting for then? It’s your round.
At half past seven, almost three hours after they’d left the village, Kris and Zak were still sat in the same pub they’d went into after Kris had bought his phone. With his bag in his hand and Zak beside him to keep him steady Kris staggered out of the bar. Zak, hadn’t had much to drink, he had to keep a clear head so that he could speak to Zoë but Kris had decided to make a night of it. Unwillingly he fell into a taxi that transported them back to HCC. When the cab stopped Kris fell out and Zak had to pick him up, after he’d paid the driver, luckily Kris had kept a tight grip on his phone. It took Zak ages to get Kris to get up from off the floor so that they could get inside, because he just didn’t want to walk anywhere. Jess and Zoë on the other hand were both sat in front of the television with a pizza and a bottle of wine; they were going to wait on the boys getting back but decided against it as they showed no signs of hurrying. As soon as Jess saw the state of Kris she started shouting at him, he was a mess. Zoë thought it was hilarious but walked off into the direction of her bedroom out of the way.
Jess: Zak, what happened?
Zak: He hit the vodka, I tried to stop him but it wasn’t happening. You know what he’s like.
Kris: Am I not still here?
Jess: Shut up Kris, Zak and I are talking. I suggest you try and find the way to your bed and sleep that off.
Kris: I’m not tired.
Zak: Come on mate I’ll help you, that’s it up you, get.
Kris weakly stood up and leant against Zak, who led him towards his room, as they were walking along the corridor Kris told Zak not to forget about what he’d said. However Jess heard him and the anger built up inside her. She had specifically told him not to say anything to either Zak or Zoë and he’d deliberately ignored her. She didn’t know what to do, maybe she should pretend that she hadn’t heard it, or maybe she should confront Kris and ask him what he was playing at. Five minutes later Zak came back out from Kris’ room and spoke to Jess who he could tell was annoyed about something. He tried to find out what was going on but she wasn’t giving anything away so he turned around and went to see Zoë.
Zoë was sitting on her bed listening to her stereo, Zak didn’t know what it was but it didn’t sound too bad. When he knocked on the door she turned the music off and went to let him in.
Zoë: Erm, hi Zak. What’s up?
Zak: Just felt like a chat, and the others aren’t in the best of moods to talk to at the minute.
Zoë: So what’s on your mind?
Zak: You (he answered without thinking and then quickly tried to say something else but it was too late)
Zoë: Has Kris put you up to this?
Zak: Kind of but it’s not what you think
Zoë: I knew it
Zak: No wait, it’s not like that he just made a few things clear to me. Zo I really, really like you and if I don’t want to miss my chance because somebody else comes along. I want to be with you and I hope you feel the same about me.
Zoë: And this has nothing to do with Kris or Jess
Zak shook his head and Zoë told Zak all that he needed to know with one gentle kiss. When they broke apart he had the biggest smile ever plastered over his face and Zoë was also smiling, and they spent the night together just happy to be with each other, it’s a shame the same couldn’t be said for Kris and Jess.
The next morning when Kris seen Jess sitting at the breakfast bar; her face was like thunder. He had no idea what was wrong with her but he had a feeling that he was about to find out. She hadn’t seen him coming out from the bathroom all clean and dressed, so he snuck up behind her and gently kissed her neck. Getting a fright she jumped and pulled away from him with an unpleasant look on her face.
Kris: What’s wrong princess?
Jess: Why don’t you tell me?
Kris: Have I done something to upset you?
Jess: Let’s see, would it be the fact that you came home blind drunk last night? No, because that I can handle, or maybe it was that you completely ignored everything I said to you about Zak and Zoë.
Kris: I never said anything he didn’t already know.
Jess: That’s not the point, you promised.
Kris: But Jess –
Jess: No buts Kris, you promised and that’s the end of it. I’m sorry but I have to go to my class now, we’ll talk later when I get back.
Kris: Jess wait, you aren’t serious about this? Jess, come back.
It was too late though as Jess walked out of the door without a second look back. Kris sat miserably at the breakfast bar; he couldn’t believe that Jess had acted like that. He didn’t
