Okay so this is my new fic, and I'll continue it once rosie's days is finished. Hope you enjoy it, and please tell me what you think, I'm not really sure what it's like yet. so here we go...

PART 1

University brings different things to different people. To some, it’s life experiences, to others, it brings knowledge and understanding of who you are, but to a small percentage of people, university brings none of those things, when their time there is up, the only thing they’re left with is an enormous hole, a hole in which their past love used to fill. This hole can never be filled, just as no one can replace the person they once loved. For these people University brings only one thing, a sense of emptiness and vast heartbreak. This was the case for Kris Fisher.

The sound of the post arriving prompted Kris to remove himself from where he had been all morning- laid on the sofa. Even then it was a struggle to get up; it was as if his body didn’t want to move, it never wanted to move these days. Picking his junk mail up from the carpet, Kris slowly deciphered the writing on the front and, concluding that it was all either bank statements or other legal stuff, he added the letters in his hand to the other ones in the pile that had been building up over the weeks. He didn’t have time to deal with mail; he didn’t have time to deal with anything anymore. It seemed like ages ago that he had been happy and basically care free, but he knew in reality that it was only three weeks ago. Three weeks ago his world came crashing down around him, three weeks ago he received the news that caused him to lose his job because he was never there, it was three weeks ago today that Kris received the letter that destroyed his life.

He had spent months after leaving Chester building up his life, getting a job, a flat. He had moved back to Ireland, fixed things with his parents, found new friends, new hobbies- but none of that mattered to him anymore; he wanted them to matter, he wanted to care, but he didn’t. It was impossible, as impossible as his life.

Walking over to the bathroom, Kris examined himself in the mirror. It had been just over a year since he’d left HCC, but he seemed to have aged beyond that. The colour in it had been washed away with his job those three weeks ago. His complexion was grey, ironic, Kris supposed, since it matched his mood so well these days. His make-up bag lay untouched, just like it had been for a while. Kris saw no need for make-up anymore; after all, who was he trying to impress?

No one. That was who.

Sighing, he rubbed his eyes and picked up a toothbrush, all too aware that it hadn’t been used in days. This hit him hard, he was disgusting, foul; no wonder no body wanted him, he was a wreck, a repugnant wreck. After thoroughly scrubbing his teeth he filled the sink, letting it fill with hot water, watching the thing wisps of steam rise out of the bowl. Lowering his head he dipped his face into the water and cursed, he was scolding his face- literally. Shaking his head at his own stupidity, he dried his face with a towel that was lay on the floor and resumed his position of the sofa, the place where he seemed to have spent the most time in the last few weeks. God, he thought, if I sit on here for any longer there’s going to be a Kris shaped imprint here forever. This notion caused Kris to smile, something he didn’t seem to be doing a lot of lately. He had to admit though, for an outsider looking in on him, his way of life at the moment would have been found amusing. He was laid on a grotty sofa all day, living off pot noodles and cold baked beans, and he hadn’t had a shower in a week and a half. It was like the episode of friends when Monica can’t sleep because of her break-up with Richard, only this was much, much worse; or too Kris it seemed like that anyway.

Breathing deeply, Kris set his mind back to the letter he had received three weeks ago and let his arm fall down to beside the sofa, where it had been left. Picking it up he examined the grotty look of it was now in- he had looked at it at least twice a day since he had received it. His heart was cold as he looked at the writing he had gazed upon so many times before, and heaving a sigh, he began to read the letter he knew would kill him even more inside.

Kris,
I know I haven’t heard from you in little over a year, which gives me the impression that you don’t really want to know me anymore, but I thought I should write and tell you about what this letter will later explain. I didn’t have your new address so I hope you don’t mind but I contacted your Mum and Dad and asked them for it, I don’t know if they said anything to you or not though.
I miss you Kris, I really do. I mean, we were best friends and you were the only person I knew who could tell it like it is- I must admit that wasn’t always a good thing, but I loved you for it. This year without you has been strange, I was used to seeing, and arguing with you every day and I have to say I still haven’t found someone else you could bicker with me like you could. You’re one of a kind Kris, and I don’t think I’m ever going to find someone like you ever again.
So anyway, I’ve been sat for hours trying to put what I’m going to say into words, I tried just writing a plainly and simply, and I’ve tried going through pages and pages of writing trying to explain it. Every other letter I’ve wrote has ended up in the bin- you know how I’m a perfectionist, or at least you used to know anyway. I decided in the end that no matter what I do, I’m going to think it too harsh, or that it doesn’t explain the point enough, so I’m going to tell it like it is. I’m going to tell you the truth.
I’m getting married Kris, next May. His names Nathan
I know it all seems kind of sudden, but I can assure you it’s not. We’ve been dating now for nine months, and I love him- a lot. I hope you can come to the wedding, it’ll mean so much to me to have you there with me- my best friend.
I’m going to leave my address and phone number on a separate piece of paper in the envelope, and it would be great if you gave me a ring. I’ll tell you the details of the wedding, and where it is and everything.
Kris I know we haven’t contacted each other in a year but I just thought I’d let you know, I’ve contacted Zoë and Zak too, although now Elliot, apparently he’s in America working for a base in NASA or something. To think we used to take the mic out of him!

Please get in touch. Jess

Kris coughed to distract himself from the fact that tears were now rolling down his face.

Jess was getting married.

Okay so next part, I'll be introducing quite a few new characters in the first few chapters so tell me if you think they're any good or not, because I'll change them if not.

PART 2

The cupboards were empty. The fridge was empty. There was no food at all, which ultimately meant that some time soon, Kris was going to have to leave his flat; and the more he thought of the idea, the less he liked it. He had spent the last three weeks ignoring his calls, leaving his texts unanswered, and had not talked to anyone barring the pizza delivery man and his friend Pete, who had dropped by to check he wasn’t dead. His flat was cosy, it was safe; and outside at the moment just seemed so frightening. Everyone would judge him, they’d stare at him, and they’d make him feel uncomfortable- just like they did when he was younger. It had always been like that, and probably always would. When he was feeling confident, when he was happy and care-free, he was glad to admit that people’s comments and constant looks didn’t bother him; but now, now he was feeling vulnerable, and he couldn’t think of anything worse.
*

Slipping on a jacket Kris wrapped his scarf around his neck and pushed his feet into a pair of old trainers. He wanted to blend into the background as much as possible, and he knew that a pair of black boots wasn’t exactly the way to do that. So, grabbing his wallet from the top of his chest of drawers, he put his hood up and walked to the front door, unlocking it and pushing it open.

Feeling the cold air hit his face, Kris tightened his scarf at the touch of it. He hadn’t felt fresh air on his skin in a while, and he had to admit that it felt good- refreshing almost. On turning to lock the door Kris staggered backwards, his eyes widening at what he saw in front of him. His shock however, slowly turned to amusement as he realised what, or rather who he was looking at. Propped against the wall to the left of the door, sat Pete, his coat buttoned up to his chin and his hands in his jean pockets. His well known cheeky grin plastered to his face, Pete held a hand up towards Kris, motioning for his to help him get up.
“Y’alright mate?” She ginger haired boy asked, giving his friend a slap on one shoulder.
“I think I should be asking the questions don’t you?” Kris informed him, a lopsided grin creeping to his face. Pete was the type of person that would always make him feel better, it was just his nature. “So why are you sat outside my flat?” he continued, making his way down the steps that led them both to the street.
“Well I knew you’d have to step outside eventually.” Pete stated matter-of-factly. “I mean, not even you can go almost four weeks without restocking.”

He gave Kris a wink and bend down to refasten his shoe, noting that it had been loosened. On doing so, he glanced back up at Kris, giving him the same smile he always did.
“And besides,” he added, a sarcastic tone flavouring his soft Irish accent. “I needed to know that you definitely weren’t dead. Because if it had got to a month and you still hadn’t stepped outside the door, I think I’d probably of had to phone someone. I mean, if you were gone, then I could have your flat cheap, because lets face it, people might have been put off buying it if there’d been a dead body rotting in there.”
Kris gave a chuckle and watched as his friend rose from the floor. “Oh and the thought of a dead body having been laid in your kitchen doesn’t bother you does it?” he mocked.
“Nah not really mate. I mean, you’re a friend and all, but I like your flat much more than I like you.” Pete joked, giving Kris a shove and sending him flying into the shop window.
Hitting the glass, Kris let Pete laugh at him, before rolling up his sleeves slowly and running after him, watching as his bright ginger hair glowed in the sun.
“Hey I thought you needed food!” Pete yelled behind him, still trying to escape the lean blonde man running behind him.
“I do!” Kris hollered back, picking up his speed in attempt to try and catch him, “But I’m going to get you first!”

And with that, Kris sent himself flying through the air, and on landing on top of his friend, he began tearing up grass and repeatedly stuffing it into Pete’s mouth.

I wrote this up pretty quick while the ideas were still in my head so sorry for any stupid mistakes in it.

PART 3

Kris walked through the doors of his local with Pete, the warm air hitting him straight in the face and the smell of beer reaching him instantly. Having been to the corner shop and dropped off his food back at his flat, Pete had persuaded him to go for a drink, knowing that their usual group would most likely be drinking in there that night. Pete motioned over to a group sat in the corner of the pub, and together they began to approach them, seeing how long it would take for them to realise that they were there. On reaching the table, Kris found himself being greeted by cheers and choruses of ‘Oh my god you’re alive!’, before being pounced upon by a small blonde girl, who was clinging to him as hard as she possibly could.
“Hey Clo,” Kris muttered, finding it hard to react to the greeting she had gave him.
“Don’t you dare do that again!” She declared to him, prodding him in the chest with her index finger. “I actually did think that you’d died!”

This was responded to with a deep chuckle from behind her, this of which came from a thick set brown haired man holding a beer firmly in his hand. “Honestly she did,” he told Kris. “Pete said that he thought you’d left us, meaning that he thought you’d left town or something, and we found Chloe five minutes later crying her eyes out talking about funeral expenses.”
“Well how was I supposed to know what you meant?” Chloe shot at him, making an attempt to defend herself. “I mean, I hadn’t seen him for two weeks, there was like a thousand mails outside his flat, and he wasn’t answering any of his calls. What was I supposed to think?”
“You were supposed to think that he wanted to be left alone,” the man continued, a smile still planted confidently on his face, “Not that he was bloody dead, seriously Clo, sometimes I worry about you.”

Pete burst into laughter at that point, it all becoming too much for him as he sunk to the floor in fits of hysterics.

“It’s not my fault I have a heart Lewis,” Chloe informed the dark haired man, and turning back towards Kris as she said so, she directed her next sentence toward him. “I really did miss you Kris!” she told him, cuddling into him again, and then pulling him down onto the seat next to her, she picked up her beer and tried to ignore the fact that Pete was still laughing on the floor.

On sitting down, Kris next directed his attention to the two people sat the other end of the table, who were grinning uncontrollably. “Lucy, Eric,” he said, nodding at each of them as he said there name.
“Kris,” they said together, nodding their heads in unison as a response.
Kris shook his head, looking around the group and noting that they were doing the same as him. “How do you guys always know what each other are going to say?” he asked Lucy and Eric, finding them still grinning as he turned his head back towards them.
“Secret,” they chorused, causing Pete to fling a beer mat across the table at Eric’s head

“Seriously stop doing that!” he told them agitatedly, “It’s really freaky. It’s like you’ve got a physic connection or something,”
“And who said we haven’t?” Eric teased, widening his eyes until they were at great proportion and then looking into Lucy’s head, making humming noises as he did so.
“Oh very funny,” Pete said sarcastically, “If you’ve got physic powers, then I’m sleeping with that blonde bird at the bar.”

This comment caused Chloe to turn her head quickly to the direction of the tall blonde haired girl sitting on a barstool. Her mouth hanging open slightly, she gawped at Pete. “You’re sleeping with her!” She protested, a tone of disbelief in her voice.
“Shut up Clo,” Kris laughed
“Yeah shut up Clo!” the rest of the group joined in, and Eric threw the beer mat that had just hit him at Chloe, resulting in her falling backwards off her chair.

“Honestly, sometimes I really do worry about her,” Lewis informed the rest of the group, and as Chloe rose from the floor, she was greeted with laughter and the threat of five more beer mats soaring past her head.

PART 4

It took the group a full hour of drinking; examining girls and the discussing the horrendous date Lucy had been on the night before until they finally ran out of things to say and had to ask Kris the one question that had been on everyone’s minds. Even Pete hadn’t been able to get it out of him yet, and being his best friend, Pete was usually the person Kris told things to first.

Silence consumed the group, each knowing what the other wanted to say, but no one daring to voice it. Finally, Chloe bit her lip and put on her nicest, most caring voice, before saying across the table “So Kris, what exactly has been wrong with you?”

Kris felt every eye on the table become focused on him; he had known the question would come some time, but he still didn’t know exactly how he was going to answer it. He hesitated, mulling over his reply, before deciding that just telling his friends about the letter wouldn’t be enough; he would have to tell them the full story, right from the beginning.

“Well,” he started, “This is going to be a long story so I’d get comfy if I were you.”
He looked around the group and smiled as he saw Lucy pat Lewis’ shoulder to check it’s comfort and then proceed to rest her head on it.
“Ahh,” she whispered soothingly. “Right I’m comfy, you can start.”
Nodding, Kris picked up his beer, let the fluid wet his lips and started his story, their story- The story of Kris and Jess.

“Well I went to University in a place called Chester, I’m pretty sure you all know that but I’ll tell you anyway, it kind of fits with what I’m saying I guess. So anyway, in a flat there was me, a girl called Zoë, Zak, Elliot- this weird kid, and then there was Jess.”
He paused on saying her name, a lump starting to form in his throat, but he pushed it away.
“Me and Jess, well we used to love to fight. It was sort of our thing I guess. I’d borrow her lip gloss- well, when I say borrow I mean steal- and she’d basically take anything that belonged to me; Shoes, tops, eyeliner- she was a cow really. I dunno though, I just, really liked her. It’s hard to explain really, I don’t even know why I did, I mean, she was a selfish spoilt brat who never thought of anyone but herself, but there was some times when I found myself thinking of her in a way I didn’t think of anyone else.
It was dead strange because, well for one thing everybody thought we hated each other, and for another I don’t think we’d ever actually said anything nice to one another, but we just always seemed to end up with each other.
Valentines Day, then another time after that, then we seemed to leave it for a while, and then Christmas, then New Years Eve. Nothing ever came of it, we just slept together; we were never an official couple.
Then some time in February I think it was, things started to go wrong. Jess had been broke for a while, she was thousands of pounds in dept and she was having trouble coping. I suppose any normal person would have been fine, but this was Jess, she was used to money, she was used to skiing holidays in Italy. Living off beans on toast and pot noodles wasn’t Jessica Harris I’ll tell you now.
So she started gambling. This guy Darren got her into it- prat he was, but there you go. She won a couple of hundred pound, kept going and going and going, until she’d won almost two thousand, but it all went downhill from there. She’d spend the money as soon as she won it, which meant that when she started losing, she had nothing to pay with. In the end, I think she owed around six thousand pound.
So one day, I wake up and Jess’ gone. She’s packed her bags and left Hollyoaks. We get a phone call a few days later and it’s Jess, saying that she’s gone home and she’s not coming back. It hurt me bad, more than I thought it would I guess.
Anyway, to stop myself from rambling on even more, three weeks ago I got a letter from Jess. It’d been a year and a bit since I’d last heard from her and she goes and drops this elephant sized bombshell on me. She’s getting married, to some posh snob just like her no doubt.”

Pete, who had sat unusually silently throughout Kris’ speech, put his arm around Kris and embraced him into what he liked to call his ‘man hug’.
“It’ll be alright mate.” He informed him, “I bet there are plenty of girls out there that’d love to have a freak like you to hold them”
He gave a mischievous grin and turned his attention towards Chloe. “Take Clo over here, I’m sure she’d love to have someone like you if she wasn’t already seeing that short guy who shaves his chest.”
“He doesn’t shave his chest!” Chloe protested in the battle that she and Pete seemed to have every night, “And he’s not short!”
Kris snorted and waved his hands in the air in objection. “He’s very short actually Chloe. In fact, I think he might actually be a dwarf.”
“Fine well if that’s how you’re going to act, then I’m not going to give you any sympathy. She can marry hundreds of times for all I care!” Chloe huffed, crossing her arms and turning away from Kris.

“Seriously though Kris,” Eric started to say form across the table, “Don’t fret about this Jess girl, I know she clearly meant something to you, but at the end of the say, there’s plenty more fish in the sea.”
“Why do we girls always get referred to as fish?” Lucy suddenly spoke, eyeing up Eric as if it were him who had invented the phrase.
“Because you’re tasty and take every line that men throw at you,” Lewis joked, almost impressing himself with the quickness of his comeback.”

Kris laughed and realised that this was the first time in while that he did genuinely feel happy. He knew Eric was wrong though; there wasn’t anymore fish in the sea. For him, there was only fish, and that fish was Jessica Harris.

'I wrote you. I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you everyday for a year. It's not over, it still isn't over.'
