Very short part here, hope its ok!
PART 33 – Judas
He could feel his eyelids feel ever so slightly lighter; as if a seal had been broken, allowing them to widen. Yet at the same time they felt heavy due to the yearning he felt in his body to slip back into slumber.
But his trip back to the land of nod was not to be.
‘John Paul,’ came a whisper like a breeze through his near subconscious state.
He opened his eyes once again and found them to be peering into another, familiar set. As he gazed into the huge brown eyes in front of him; he began to fill up with the feeling of guilt.
‘I’ve missed you,’ his companion said, ‘I’ve been waiting to have you lie down next to me.’
All John Paul could do was nervously smile; what had happened last night tormenting his mind and making him wish that he wasn’t being gazed into so intensely like this, with the deep brown eyes looking deeply into his eyes where his deepest, darkest secrets were kept.
‘Did you miss me?’
‘Of course I did,’ he replied, sincerely meaning it, ‘I shouldn’t have stormed off like that Stephen, I shouldn’t have not told you where I went.’
‘Well what matters is, is that you’re here now John Paul,’ Stephen whispered as softly as he stroked his boyfriend’s cheek, eliciting a small, yet warm smile on his face.
He leaned in on him and gave him a small kiss with his face looking blissful as he approached and contorted as he pulled away.
‘You smell like a brewery,’ he stated, still softly and void of judgement, ‘Where did you end up last, a club?’
He thought about his answer to this; he had two options yet both seemed sleazy to him either way. He could either admit to where he was; a truth that would hold no suspicion to Stephen yet would make John Paul feel guilty about telling him, or lie and say he went to a club, leaving his boyfriend faced with images of uncertainty, images of John Paul and strangers and John Paul and infidelity, but at the same time, he wouldn’t have to summon up memories from the night before if he lied, he wouldn’t have to sit and tell Stephen how he had ran and went to Craig for a shoulder to cry on, so to speak, and he wouldn’t have to face the fact that last night he wanted to…last night he almost….
He looked at Stephen, which should he choose; discomfort for him or discomfort for himself.
‘No,’ he said shaking his head, ‘I went to Craig’s and we got hammered.’
There. He had admitted the truth and Stephen looked relieved, but this only caused for John Paul to inwardly cringe; Stephen really shouldn’t be this pleased about it.
‘I woke up when you came to bed,’ Stephen admitted, ‘But I just pretended to be asleep in case…in case we started arguing again. I wasn’t sure if you’d still be mad at me, if you still are actually.’
John Paul felt his own heart ache slightly, the thought of Stephen going to bed thinking that he hated him causing this. If only he knew that his boyfriend had went to bed hating himself.
‘So, how come you came home, it was pretty late, why not just stay over at Craig’s?’ Stephen asked when no reply came from his partner.
Because I didn’t trust myself, because Craig’s fiancé reminded me I shouldn’t be there; that’s what he wanted to stay, what he wanted to get off his chest, but he couldn’t say that, he couldn’t break his boyfriend’s heart in the same instance as soothing his worried mind.
‘Because I didn’t want to have you waking up this morning all alone,’ John Paul whispered his lie, ‘Because I never want to wake up without you.’
He was surprised at the sincerity this lie held, but was surprised even more so at his next action. He leaned over and looked Stephen straight in the eye, as if trying to reinforce this lie, as if forcing it upon him.
‘I will never leave you,’ he promised, ‘You are the only one I want to be with.’
And on that, he sealed his declaration with a kiss, a kiss full of lies, a kiss full betrayal, a kiss that Judas himself would have been very proud of.
John Paul McQueen, he scowled in his own head, you liar.
