“We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” Sang the many voices in unison as they all drunkenly clung to one another in a circle around the Christmas tree. The children were running in between the legs of the adults and screaming the words along with them. For each one of them the joy of finally being united as one big family was so apparent after such a hectic year. Hannah and Paul kissed passionately as the song drew to a close whilst Ben and John Paul grabbed one another and started to dance around the room.
“You managed it Han!” Paul whooped in celebration as he helped her to sit back down in the large armchair. For the first time in so many months the spirit of the occasion and her happiness had meant she had managed to break free of the confides of her wheelchair and actually walk. Yes it was slow and unsteady but the fact that she had done it was a feat of sheer brilliance to everyone.
Lola ran to her mum and hugged her tightly, “I’m so proud of you mummy. You did it!”
Hannah beamed in response to Lola and Paul, “Yes I did do it! And I am never, ever going back in that chair again. This is a new me now.”
“Let’s hope that next year is so much better than this one.” John Paul interrupted as him and Ben each sat on an arm of the chair. Wrapping their arms around Hannah they each gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“You’re an inspiration to us all!” Ben slurred as he squeezed her.
Hannah laughed out loud, “What are you lot like? I’ll tell you something though, you are all my world, I don’t know what I would do without you!”
John Paul looked at Hannah as seriously as he could and smiled softly at her - a smile that was equal on all five of the faces. “And you are our world Han, no one could ever change that.”
It was a beautiful moment, the five of them reunited again after so long. The bitter months they had endured that were full of arguments and lost hope were forgotten in that instant. The bond they shared was unbreakable and inside they all knew that whatever next year may bring, it surely couldn’t be as bad as this one.
