Jessica Marie once again pulled back a strand of her long brown hair out of her eyes, securing it with a grip pulled out of her pocket. When that was done, she picked up the spade that had been previously stuck upright in the ground beside her and continued to turn over the dirt; she wanted to make her garden look presentable, and with the harsh weather they’d been having recently, the sun had dried the entire thing up. Squealing slightly as a worm dropped from her spade to her boot, she kicked her foot up slightly, watching as the slimy thing landed on the nearby grass and vanished out of sight, and then proceeded with her work. Normally, the thought of a worm slithering about on her boots would have been enough to make her pass out, but these were not her ordinary, stylish, designer boots- these were her working boots, or her ‘gardening boots’ as she liked to call them. They were ugly, big heavy things that looked no better on her than a black bag did, but she supposed that it was her own fault that she had to wear them. It was her, after all, that had argued with her husband for hours on end about the issue of them not getting a gardener.
“But we do need a one dear, the size of our garden is too much for me to keep up with” he had told her plainly.
What he really meant however, was that he was too lazy to get up and move out of his study to do a bit of real work, the work that she had always thought husbands were supposed to do. Well Jess wasn’t going to stand for it; she simply did not see the point in hiring yet another servant for a problem that they could easily handle themselves. So that, in fact, was what she was doing- she was handling the problem.

Her husband was called Lance Marie, and he was as ludicrous and pompous as he was fat and ugly. From France originally, Jess came to meet Lance through her mother, who introduced him as a wealthy businessman who had colleagues all over Europe. It was obvious from their first meeting that Lance was smitten with Jess, and quite as obvious to her that if she wanted an easy life, a life where she would have everything she had always wanted, she would have to play on that fact. So she began to see more of Lance, and within only five months they were married and had moved out into the country to live in a little village, namely, Beckingsdale Moore. The problem however, was that Jess hadn’t counted on her husband being such an ignorant pig. Her ‘easy life’, as she had so called it, soon turned into a one spent trying to get away from her vile husband in any way humanly possible. So now, it was a year on, and Jess was still doing just that, attempting to keep Lance as far away from her she could.

Shovelling up yet more dirt and turning it over, Jess supposed that there was in fact, one relief that she got from doing this work. There was no chance in the world that Lance was ever going to offer to help her, and so, while she was out here, planting flowers and tending to the shrubs, she was completely alone, away from Lance Marie and all the foulness his presence brought.

That thought however, she short lived. For by sharpening up her ears ever so slightly, she was able to here the heavy footed elephant making his way down the garden path, and even without turning around, she knew he must be walking with an intention, as she could hear his profound breathing rattling down the grounds. It wasn’t going to be silent for much longer.

“Jessica my little rose, Jessica darling, can you hear me?”
Jess placed an elusive smile upon her face, which looked neither convincing nor loving, merely sarcastic. Lance however, did not seem to see this, and bounded towards her, giving her an overpowering kiss on the lips before Jess even had time to prepare herself for it. “What ever is the matter Lance?” Jess asked him softly, while subtly trying to wipe her mouth of his saliva.
“Well dear,” he began; in the way he addressed her when he was going to tell her something he thought important, “Sheila and Ralf Lullaby from number twenty four, you know, biggish house, a little smaller than ours?”
Jess shook her head, though not enough for him to notice. She was well aware that their house was bigger than Sheila and Ralf’s, it was bigger than everyone’s in the village; it had seven bedrooms for Christ sake, it just seemed mandatory for Lance to constantly remind her of that fact.
“Well anyway they’ve just came back from their trip around Europe, they’ve been away for months now, and their throwing a little party in their grounds, with catering and entertainment. It’s in two hours, so go make yourself look pretty my little bumblebee, and we’ll go down there and join everyone.”
“I’m not really in the mood for a party Lance,” Jess told him, knowing full well that this wasn’t going to matter to him.
“Oh come on Jessica, I’ve told them we’ll be there, now go and get ready” he told her, his voice more forceful than it had been before. “Plus Ralf tells me that there’s a new couple just moved into that little house at the edge of the village, they’re invited too, so we must go and make ourselves known to them, it’s the polite thing to do.”

The polite thing to do would be to hit you over the head with this shovel, Jess thought, her knuckles whitening as her grip tightened around the handle.

“Okay dear,” she said reluctantly, keeping her thoughts to herself, just as she always did. She knew there could be no winning with Lance anyway. So, taking her gardening equipment and walking over to the servants headquarters at the bottom at the garden, she waited until Lance was definitely out of sight, threw the shovel with all her strength into the shed were the gardening tools were kept, and sunk down onto the dry grass, her head in her hands.

Jessica Marie didn’t know what possessed her to think so, but when the right moment came along, she was going to use that exact shovel to bury a Lance sized hole at the bottom of the garden and throw him in there as he slept.

PART 2

Jess made her way down the cobbled street that let from the house, arm in arm with Lance. He was talking preposterously about some deal he had just made in Spain, but Jess wasn’t listening. She had, just as she always did, let her mind wander. She was wearing a simple outfit, or simple compared to what she knew the rest of the women in the village would be wearing anyway. It was just a plain black strapless dress, and fell to the area just above her knees. She wore no jewellery, and just a simple pair of black shoes. This, she felt, was the way to emphasise the fact that she, unlike so many of the wife’s and daughters in this place, didn’t need expensive jewels and accessories to look glamorous, she did that by herself. Knowing this, Jess held her head up high as they turned the corner and approached the gate that would lead them to Sheila and Ralf’s grounds. She could hear the music of what would be, know doubt, a live band, and people were pouring into the gate as Jess and Lance approached it, all eager to show off either their wealth, or their overwhelming ego’s.
“Go on flower, we don’t want to be late,” Lance urged, edging her into the gate and through into the grounds of the Lullaby’s.
“Oh yes,” Jess muttered to herself sarcastically “Wouldn’t want to miss this now, would we?”
*

The party was, just as Jess had expected, the most immensely boring thing she had ever attended in her entire existence. The women flounced about the place, trying to act as if they were superior over the men, when even they knew that every one of them was fully under their husbands’ control. Jess simply sat back reserved from it all, just as she always did, for it wasn’t new it her to learn that the other ladies in the village didn’t like her, and she had to say that she didn’t rightly care. She didn’t want to be one of them, and so she didn’t try to be. After all, why would she want to fit in somewhere just so she could go to the regular ‘village meetings’, the women held, and so she could look down her nose at everybody, just like the rest of them did, even to her, when they all knew only too well that she could be the most powerful woman in the whole of Beckingsdale Moore, if only she wanted to be.

She was brought out of her thoughts all too quickly for her liking by Lance’s fat fingers slapping down on her thigh. “Jessica my petal, this is Lord George Harrison, and he’s been just itching to meet you since I told him of our marriage only a few months ago.”
Oh God, Jess thought helplessly, another old man who wants to get into my pants.
“Well Mrs Marie you look simply astonishing,” he said in a sickly tone, taking her hand and kissing it.
“Um, thank you Lord Harrison,” Jess replied, a little put off by the feeling of nausea he was giving her.
“Oh no need for formalities Jessica dear,” he continued, “I can see that you and I are going to become good friends!”
“Lucky me!” Jess said sarcastically, a mocking smile creeping to her lips. This remark however, went unnoticed by Lord George Harrison, who had been distracted by the servant walking past him, holding a plate of crab cakes.
“Good man!” he boomed, his voice directed towards the servant dressed in a plain black suit, “Kindly let me have one of those crab cakes, for my mouth is simply watering!”
“I wonder why,” Jess muttered, watching as he ate the entire thing in one bite.
“I’m trying to watch my weight you know Lance,” Lord George Harrison said, turning back to Jess and her husband, “But I just can’t find a method that works for normal people that will work for me.
“Some people try chewing their food,” Jess told him, giving him one her well practised illusive smiles that led her to get away with just about anything.
Lord George chucked, holding his great belly as he did so. “Oh you have yourself a good one here Lance,” he commented, acting as though Jess couldn’t hear, “You should do your best to hold on to her,”

And with that he gave her what she could only guess was supposed to be a seductive wink and walked away, leaving Jess standing alone with Lance, his hand placed firmly on her lower back.

PART 3

Alone, Jess strolled around the Lullaby’s grounds, looking over at the servant’s quarters, then back at their house, the big old century cottage. Lance had, to her relief, left her to go and talk to Ralf, who had suddenly became available for conversation, and so Jess was left by herself, just like she normally was as these parties, although she had to say that she didn’t exactly care. Still scanning her surroundings, Jess wandered up to the fountain that stood as a centrepiece of the garden and perched on the end of it, letting her hand fall into the water. All she needed, she found herself thinking, was just one reason for her to escape the life she was currently living, and she’d be gone. One good reason and she could leave Lance and go somewhere far away. She knew of course, that this reason that she was dreaming of, would have to be pretty amazing, for if Lance though it inadequate, he would either not let her leave, or he would drag her name through the dirt so badly that she wouldn’t be able to get a job anywhere, buy a house anywhere, or even drive a car anywhere- she would be completely and utterly ruined.

So of course, Jess was just waiting for this reason to come along, this event that would make her able to leave her disgusting, irritating, ignorant husband.

Jess’ thoughts stopped abruptly, and her hand at once launched itself out of the refreshing coolness of the water, for suddenly, she was looking at the face of someone that seemed vaguely familiar to her. As there eyes locked, there seemed to be a moment where neither knew what to do, or whether they were in fact misplacing the face of person they thought they were looking at, and then that moment was over, because Jess had ran. She scanned the area, looking for her husband, and found him instantly, for if she hadn’t seen his enormous frame and the shadow it was casting on the grass, she would have sooner or later heard his ludicrous laugh that echoed about the place. Reaching her husband, she snuck a peak back towards the man she had just run from and nodded her head in an instance. She had thought there was a chance she had been mistaken, but no, that was definitely him.

She had just bumped into Kris Fisher.

Feeling her eyes widen in what she didn’t know was shock or total horror, Jess turned her back on the blonde haired man that was now looking straight at her and tugged feverishly on her husband’s arm.
“Lance can we go now plea…”
“I’m talking Jessica dear; we can go when Ralf here finishes telling me about his delightful time in the Alps.”
Jess sighed; knowing that she wouldn’t be able to get Lance to move now one of his pompous friends had gotten talking about one of their holidays, and she knew that once they’d finished boasting, Lance would proceed to tell him about the places he’d been, making them sound more extravagant, and far more interesting than they actually were. If she stayed and waited for the two men to finish taking about the ‘delightful Alps’ as her husband so adoringly put it, she wouldn’t get away until nightfall, which would mean the chance of bumping into Kris Fisher- and that certainly wasn’t an option.
“I’m going to go back to the house Lance,” Jess told him, raising her voice slightly as he suddenly began to laugh in the most overdramatic way. “My heads hurting, I’m going to go lay down,”
Lance simply grunted at her and gave her a slight wave of the hand, as if she were one of his servants, and carried on talking to the vulgar man in front of him.

Shaking her head in disbelief, Jess merely turned around and started heading towards the cobbled path that led to her house. Before she disappeared completely behind the stone wall however, she dared a quick glance back towards the fountain, where the blonde man stood talking to what she could only suppose to be his wife. She didn’t know what he was doing here, but she could only pray with all her might that they weren’t the couple that had bought the small cottage at the edge of the village, because if she, Jessica Harris, had to live within a mile of Kris Fisher, she really felt that she might faint.

Okay, so my writings been crap lately, and ive been deleting everything ive wrote, and plus with all my exams and things i haven't been able to come on here very often, but anyway ive finally got a piece wrote. It's not very good, and probably not very interesting, but hey, read it, tell me what you think...

PART 4

And she let her lips meet his, despite knowing in her heart that it was wrong, and despite knowing that she was going against everything she had ever known, she allowed herself kiss him, and she allowed herself to sink further and further into his arms, and into his heart. It was what was forbidden the most, and yet, she still wanted it more than anything she had ever wanted in her life. It was like the consequences of her actions didn’t matter, because at that moment, the kiss was everything- he was everything. “I love you,” he whispered, letting his lips part from hers for a second, and looking her in the eyes. “I love you more than anything, more than anything in the world.”
She felt a smile creep to her mouth, and at that same moment Kris saw a shining in her eyes that he knew he had never seen before. Resting her head against his, she listened to his breathing, only for a couple on seconds, before whispering back “I love you too.”

Jess woke suddenly, the room dark and quiet, except of course, from the heavy breathing of Harold beside her. Casting her mind to what she had just been dreaming about, she rubbed her eyes and got out of bed, and on looking at the clock on her side table, she sighed and walked over to the door. It was three o’clock, and she knew there wasn’t a chance of her going back to sleep. On reaching the landing, Jess stood for a minute, her arms resting on the rails of the banister, her eyes focused on nothing in particular, just staring out in front of her. She made her way down she stairs, not bothering to be light footed, as she was well aware that not even a small earthquake would wake her husband from his slumber. She had no fears of being caught; her worries were merely of her never having a full night sleep again, as it certainly seemed at this moment in time, that this was the case. Slipping her feet into her white fluffy slippers, Jess opened the front door and stepped out into the garden, relishing the feeling as the light breeze hit her face.

She made her way down a cobbled back to the end of the grounds, where she did her gardening, and looked on at the little stream that passed through their garden. Jess always had found this comforting, to listen to nothing but the splashing of the water; she was so used to hearing Lance below that quiet seemed almost a blessing when it came.

Standing here in the silence however, made her reflect on the fact that she should actually be in bed at this time of night, or morning, she reminded herself. It was three o’clock, and for the seventh night running, Jess was awake with no apparent reason for being so. Well, that last statement wasn’t strictly true, Jess thought. She did have an idea as to why she hadn’t been sleeping properly, and it was to do with the recurring and not to mention vivid dreams she had been having all week. The truth of the matter was, Jess hadn’t been able to stop having them since she had ran from Kris Fisher at Ralf and Sheila Lullaby’s fountain, and she couldn’t work out why. She knew that she certainly didn’t want to see him, God knows how awkward that would be, and she was certain that, until last week, she hadn’t been giving Kris Fisher even a thought, he had been completely out of her mind. Nevertheless, this was not the case now and she sure that she preferred it the way it had been before. At least then she’d been able to have a decent nights sleep.

Heaving a deep sigh, Jess ran her fingers through her hair and made for the gate at the bottom of the garden, unlocking it and stepping through onto the cobbled lane. God knows the knew she’d be the talk of the village if she was seen walking about in the middle of night with only her nightdress and a pair of slippers on, but Jess wasn’t in the mood to be cautious. She was honestly just pleased that she was getting a walk, as she had barely left the grounds in this past week in fear of bumping into Kris Fisher, and she definitely knew she wasn’t going to see him walking about at this time of night, his wife would probably have him under wraps.

God how strange that thought seemed to Jess. When she knew him he could keep a pair of boots, let alone a long-term girlfriend, and a wife, a wife was even more serious, and even more unlike the Kris Jess used to know.

And that was the scariest thing to Jess, what if he wasn’t she Kris she used to know? What if he had changed into the boring unrecognisable person? It had been three years after all; university was long over for him, and apparently, Hollyoaks was too. Kris could be a completely different man, but it was whether this was a good or a bad thing that Jess couldn’t work out.

Jess was quite away from her house now and well into the village. Passing the town hall, she let her head tilt back to the sky, and she gazed at the stars. She was walking in the middle of the road, well aware that it was far too late for there to be any traffic, and she could feel the patchiness of the cobbles under from under her feet- it seemed there was only so far you can walk in a pair of white fluffy slippers without your heels beginning to ache. Bringing her head back to face forwards, Jess heard a scarping from the alleyway to the left of her, and immediately turned her eyes to look at the person who was making the noise.

“Well hello Mrs Jessica Marie,” said the blonde haired man as he stepped out of the darkness, “If anyone was to see you walking about at this time of night in an outfit that revealing, they’d thinking you were trying to pick up men!”

If Jess had thought for even one minute that Kristopher Fisher was a changed man, than she knew now that she had been gravely mistaken,

PART 5

Watching as the blonde haired man approached her, Jess felt herself fidgeting, this was the moment she had been dreading for a week.
“So,” Kris began again, a cheeky smile spreading to his lips. “Are you going to tell me why you’re out at this disgraceful hour wearing nothing but a piece on linen?”
“It’s a nightdress,” Jess retaliated, though she wasn’t really sure why it mattered, whatever the item of clothing was called, she still looked like a complete idiot.
Kris nodded his head at this statement, pretending to think about what she had just said. “Ah a nightdress, well that’s me in my place then.”

Jess gave him a sarcastic smile and went to turn away, as if she didn’t feel awkward enough, now he was proceeding to make her feel embarrassed too. She certainly didn’t need this.

“Hey come on Jess, where you going?” Kris called after her, and before she could answer he was by her side, looking at her in the way he always used to, like the centre of all his jokes.
“I am not going to stay here and be insulted by you,” Jess shot at him, attempting to cover herself up in what happened to be a revealing nightdress.
“And so you’re going to go home to your husband?” Kris asked her, before adding, “Handsome man you’ve got there Jessica Marie, you struck gold when you married him.”
Jess gave him a piercing look and stormed ahead, not bothering to amuse him further by responding.
“Ah but I forgot,” came his voice from behind her, he appeared to have stopped trying to follow her; “You really did strike gold didn’t you? The neighbours pointed out your house to me yesterday, and I think you’ll find I was almost blown away with shock. It’s H.U.G.E huge.”

Jess spun around abruptly, her eyes burning into Kris’ skull.

“You know what Kris Fisher,” she said, making her way back down towards him, “There’s a reason I haven’t thought of you in three years, and it’s because you have to be the foulest, pretentious, most pathetic little man that ever walked the planet, and even though this whole village is full of big-headed snobs, I would rather be around any of them than spend another moment here with you. So goodnight Kris, go back home to your wife, and I’ll go back to my great big posh house and my ignorant stupid husband. ”

She was standing face to face with him now, and her heavy breathing was a sign for Kris to just how angry he had made her. He however, chose to ignore it.

“I didn’t say he was ignorant or stupid,” he said quietly, a smirk still clear on his face, “Just that he was a bit on the ugly side.”
Jess bit her tongue to prevent herself from screaming out loud and simply said, “I would have married anyone in the world Kris, as long as he didn’t act the slightest bit like you.”
Kris gave a little laugh, but then the smile vanished from his face and became serious, if only for a moment. “You know Jess; you’re not being very nice to me, considering I’m your neighbour and all. Politeness is the first sign of a friendly neighbour, and I’m not seeing much of it,”
He was teasing her, and she knew that she shouldn’t have been getting annoyed; she had learnt from passed experiences that it only encouraged him, she just couldn’t help it though, it had been a while since she had felt the sarcasm of Kris Fisher, and she just wasn’t used to the effect it had on her. “That’s because I’m not a friendly neighbour Kris. I don’t want you here; in fact, I wouldn’t have you in this country if I could help it!” she shouted at him, well aware that there was a chance she could wake the surrounding houses, but not entirely caring.
“Harsh Jessica, very harsh,” Kris mocked, showing her a flash of his teeth once again.
“No Kris, harsh will be when I slip into your house in the middle of the night and murder you in your sleep; at the moment, I’m just getting started.”

And with that she turned around once again and stormed up the cobbled pathway to her garden gate, leaving Kris Fisher standing at the bottom of the bank, hands in the pockets of his jeans, a stupid smile on his face.

“Jessica Harris,” he whispered to himself, looking up to the space she had previously been walking in, “Murdering me is the last thing on your mind.”
