“And do you, Jessica Elizabeth Harris, take thee, Joshua Anthony Herington, to be your lawful wedded husband?”
Anthony? She hadn’t known Joshua’s middle name was Anthony. She didn’t really know all that much about him she realised. Apart from the fact that he was a lawyer, and was really boring and had nothing in common with her. And that she didn’t love him. Oh god, she thought to herself as she realised she was making a mistake.
If she didn’t love this man then why was she marrying him? What was she going to do now? Her mind raced as she suddenly became aware of the hundreds of eyes looking up at her expectantly.
“Jessica?” Prompted the priest.
“I...” She started, “I… I can’t…” She took a deep breath and gathered her thoughts “No. I don’t. I’m so sorry.” She pulled the engagement ring from her finger and placed it gently into Joshua’s hand before running down the aisle and out of the church, without looking back.
Just keep running, she told herself. She had half expected someone to follow her and try to persuade her to go back into the church. But no-one came.
Her friends and family had known she was making a mistake. They had told her enough times, but she had been too stubborn to listen. And she thought he fitted in with her perfectly planned every-detail-accounted-for future.
She thought he might have come after her though. Oh well, if he didn’t have enough about him to come after his bride on their wedding day it was a good thing she hadn’t married him. It was his loss.
When she reached a bus stop she looked at the map. She didn’t know London very well, but Joshua’s parents had insisted on the wedding being held there.
She traced her finger along the map until she eventually found what she was looking for.
North Crescent Avenue.
She would need the 27NB Bus, which luckily she noted, was due in just under five minutes.
She tried to sit down on the slanted bench of the bus stop but found it was almost impossible in her wedding dress, so settled for standing instead.
Soon enough the bus pulled up and the door opened. She climbed on, fully aware that everyone on the bus was staring at her. ‘The girl in the wedding dress.’ But at that moment she didn’t care.
“North Crescent please.” She said to the bus driver.
“One thirty-five please love.” He said as he printed a ticket out of the machine.
“Oh no! I don’t have any money with me.” Jess looked upset and angry with herself. What was she going to do now with no money and nowhere to go?
The bus driver, seeing this girl stood on his bus in a wedding dress, looking crestfallen at the fact she couldn’t afford to pay, took pity on her and told her it didn’t matter, she could ride for free. “Just this once.”
She smiled and thanked him before taking a seat on the bus.
