Hello every one. this is my new fic about.............................. Darren Osborne
It's gonna be running alongside my other fic Soul Searching(McDean) so there will be some references to things that happen in that one here, and some to things that happen here on the other fic.
Phew... now the explainations are over I can post the first part, sorry if it's a bit slow.
Darren leant across the bar. The Dog was practically dead. Tuesday mornings usually were, but today there were two people working, him and Caitlyn. She had only started last night and Jack felt it was unfair to expect her to work alone on her second shift, but he had to go out and Frankie was working at Evissa, so Jack insisted Darren stay with her. He’d been looking forward to relaxing upstairs. He’d got up at the crack of dawn to buy Craig a lock for his door, but he figured it was necessary after what he had witnessed the previous evening. Just as he thought this, Craig came down from upstairs.
“You off to school?” Darren asked.
“Yeah, guess I gotta face the music sometime.” Craig replied.
“Well, have fun.” Darren said sarcastically, “and try not to get into any more trouble.” He continued with a smirk, to which Craig gave an embarrassed smile before rushing out the door.
“Is that your brother?” Caitlyn asked as she came up behind Darren.
“What? Craig? No. Well, yeah, he’s my step-brother, I guess.” Darren looked at her confused as to why she was interested.
“He seems nice.” She said casually, “Reminds me a bit of my younger brother.”
“Really?” Darren replied, not really interested, but at least listening to her talking was slightly more entertaining than doing nothing at all.
“Yeah, looks like he’s quite a cheeky chappy.” She smiled, “But underneath it all he’s a bit insecure, doesn’t get his own worth, you know?”
Darren felt himself smile at this. She was right, Craig was just like that. Realising Caitlyn could see his smile he quickly changed hi expression.
“What would you know? You only saw him for twenty seconds, you’ve never even spoken to him. If you must know he’s an annoying little twerp.”
“Sorry, I was just saying, first impressions and all that.” She said sweetly before turning to the customer approaching the bar.
Darren watched her as she walked away. He hadn’t bothered to pay much attention to her earlier that morning when Jack had introduced them, just said hello, not looking up from the paper he was looking through. But she seemed ok, not much to look at, he thought, kinda pretty, in an unconventional way. Her hair looked messy, but like it was done deliberately, she wasn’t what you’d call petite, but she carried herself well. Suddenly she turned back to face him, and he felt a little embarrassed that she’d caught him looking at her.
“Talking of first impressions,” she said with a slight smirk, “you seem, interesting!”
And as she went to walk away, Darren quickly went after her.
“What do you mean, interesting?” he asked.
“Ah, you know.” She smiled, “Just, well, interesting. I’m looking forward to finding out what’s behind this front you’re putting on.”
Darren was stunned, this girl didn’t even know him and here she was making assumptions, and not just about him. There was Craig too. But as much as he wanted to hate her for it, there was just something about Caitlyn that made him want to know more about her. Not that he’d ever admit that.

Part 2
Darren looked at the clock on the wall and sighed heavily, it was only half past 1. He still had three hours until Mercedes was due in to take over. He glanced over at Caitlyn, she didn’t seem too bored, she was keeping herself busy, cleaning the shelves and dusting off bottles. Darren was just about to go over and offer to give her a hand when he heard someone coming in through the back door. Knowing that no one was due back for at least a couple of hours he figured he’d better go check it out. As he walked out to the back he could see Craig checking to see if anyone was about, so, keeping out of site he watched to see why Craig was being so cautious. Once he was sure the coast was clear, Craig gestured as much outside and was followed in by John Paul. Darren decided now was as good a time as any to make his presence known.
“And just what do we have here?” he shouted as he stepped out to face Craig and John Paul, causing them to jump slightly.
“Jesus, Darren. You nearly gave me a heart attack!”
“Oops.” Darren said sarcastically, “I thought you were going to school?”
“Yeah I did!”
“Craig, you’ve been gone less than an hour, must have been a short lesson.”
“So?”
“So what happened to facing the music?”
“I did. Just didn’t like the song!” Craig replied with a smirk as he and John Paul darted past Darren and up the stairs.
“Oi!” Darren shouted as they pushed past him, “You girls behave yourselves up there!”
Hearing the door to the flat slam shut, Darren went to make his way back to the bar, but as he turned he saw Caitlyn looking at him, smiling warmly.
“What are you smiling at?”
“You’ve got a bit of a soft spot for him haven’t you?”
“What? No!” Darren said firmly, “Are you always this nosey?”
“Yep!” She replied with a wink before quickly turning on her heels and walking back out to the bar.

Part 3
4:30 finally arrived, as did Mercedes. She went out the back to put her coat away and Darren followed on his way up to the flat. Halfway up the stairs he remembered what was probably happening in there and decided that the love birds probably needed some privacy so turning around he sat on the stairs, trying to work out where he could go. As Caitlyn came through to get her coat she noticed him sitting there. He looked sweet, she thought, kind of like a lost little kid.
“You alright there?” she asked, smiling sympathetically.
“Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?” he replied, a little more bluntly than he had intended.
“No reason.” She said, “You just look a bit, well, lost. Why are you sitting there?”
“It’s just Craig’s got his b…” Darren trailed off, and sensing that he didn’t want to say what he was thinking she changed the subject.
“Look, do you fancy a coffee? I’m new here after all, I could do with someone to gimme the low down on the locals.” She offered.
“Well?” Darren seemed unsure.
“My treat?”
“Well, I guess one coffee can’t hurt.” He said, “But this doesn’t mean I have to be nice. I still think you’re too nosey!”
“And I totally respect that!” Caitlyn laughed. “So where can we get a good coffee round here?”
“I suppose we could go to Il Gnosh.”
“Lead the way, I’m in desperate need of caffeine.” She said with a smile, and Darren grabbed a jacket from the hook and led her out of the pub.

Darren sat staring out of the window of Il Gnosh as Caitlyn brought over their drinks. Deep in thought Darren barely looked up.
“Are you alright?” Caitlyn asked, but Darren didn’t respond.
“Darren?” she said, slightly louder and gently tapping his arm as she did.
“What?” he said looking over at her.
“Wanna talk about it?”
“About what?”
“Whatever’s on your mind?”
Darren looked at Caitlyn and could see the genuine concern in her eyes. She’d only known him a few hours and here she was, worrying about him. He smiled slightly at this. For some reason, he felt compelled to tell her.
“I’m just a bit worried about Craig.”
“That’s your step brother right? The one from earlier?”
“Yeah.”
“So why are you worried about him? Is there something wrong with him?”
“Not as far as I’m concerned, but I hope his mum feels the same.”
Caitlyn looked quite confuse by this comment, so Darren lowered his voice and started to explain. An hour or so later, Caitlyn knew all about Craig and John Paul, and why Darren didn’t want to go up to the flat earlier.
“So his family don’t know?”
“No, but everyone’s talking about it, and I just hope he tells Frankie before someone else saves him the trouble.”
“I guess that would be kind of awkward.”
“Just a bit.” Darren laughed slightly, “Anyway, we’ve been here over an hour now, and I still don’t know anything about you.”
Caitlyn picked up her coffee cup.
“There’s not much to tell.” She said, taking a sip from her cup and looking out of the window.
“Well, what made you leave the bright lights of London and move to dull old Hollyoaks?”
“Just fancied a change of scenery, I guess.” she said still looking out of the window.
Darren wasn’t entirely convinced by this, but decided to let it go as he saw Rhys and Gilly heading towards them.
“Alright?” Rhys said as he approached the table.
“Alright?” Darren replied as Rhys and Gilly sat down.
“I’m Gilly, by the way.” Gilly said to Caitlyn, holding out his hand for her to shake.
“Oh, yeah, right.” Darren said. “Caitlyn Maguire, this is Gilly Roach”
“Alright?” Gilly said to her with a smile.
“And that’s Rhys Ashworth.” Darren continued, motioning in Rhys’ direction.
“Nice to meet you both.” She said, smiling sweetly, and blushing slightly when she caught Gillys eye as he smiled back.
The four of them had been sitting in Il Gnosh for ages now, and Caitlyn was beginning to form ideas in her head about the two boys that had joined her and Darren. Rhys, she had decided, seemed a little more interested in himself than the conversation. Not a great quality, she thought, and the fact that he obviously thought he was gods gift didn’t help, but he seemed like he might be a laugh if you could ignore that. Then she turned her attention, and her gaze to Gilly. He seem sweet, she thought, one of those people who put others first so much they ended up forgetting about themselves. As she thought this, Gilly looked over at her, and she could feel her face flush at the embarrassment of being caught looking at him again. She had been so caught up in her thought’s that she hadn’t heard Gilly talking to her.
“Caitlyn?” Gilly said, raising his voice slightly.
“Sorry what?” she replied.
“We’re gonna meet up later, go the loft, wondered if you’d like to join us?” he said.
“Yeah sure, you guys can show me your moves.” She said with a chuckle.
“What moves?” said Rhys, puffing out his chest, “the ladies only need to look at me and they come running.” His tone of voice seemed only half serious.
“What about you Darren? Any special tricks to get the girls?” She asked.
“If he has they don’t work.” laughed Rhys, “I don’t remember the last time he had a bird.”
“Oil!” shouted Darren as Caitlyn laughed.
“So, anyway,” Gilly interrupted, “were gonna be meeting in The Dog at about half 8.”
