Chapter three
Zak: Come on then Mr Fisher. What's your favourite memory of your wife?
He placed the drinks down on the table and took a seat.
Kris (grinning): You probably won't want to hear my favourite.
Zoe (blushing): How about we stick to suitable memories that can be said in the middle of a pub for now?
Kris. Fine. I'll start with our wedding day then.
Spain, 6 years before
Jess: I'm not sure about this.
Kris: Are you saying that you don't want to marry me?
Jess: Shut up you idiot. I meant about us running away like this to do it. Our families are going to be so mad.
The pair were stood outside a beach chapel.
Kris: Listen, we'll deal with everyone's reactions when we get back. This is just about me and you right now.
He wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed the top of her head gently.
Jess (sighing): You're a bad influence.
Kris: Does that mean we're getting married today?
She smiled at him before nodding. Together, they made their way inside and waited for the ceremony in front of them to finish. The doors opened a few minutes later.
Registrar: Mr Fisher and Miss Harris please.
Jess gripped onto Kris's hand tightly as they went in. He squeezed hers reassuringly back.
Registrar: Firstly, I need to ask if there's any lawful reason that you two cannot be married.
After hearing the pair both declare no, she continued.
Registrar: Very well. I believe that you have prepared vows. Mr Fisher could we have yours please.
Kris: Jess, you know that I’m not very good at explaining how I feel but I’m going to give it a go anyway. I never imagined that meeting someone like you would change my life. You were the last person in the world that I ever expected to accept me, yet you turned out to be the only person that really could. And that scared me. I’d spent so long building up an image of people and then you changed all that. At one time I did doubt whether you actually had feelings for me or just wanted me because I was there. Then I saw this look in your eyes that broke my heart. It was after I came back from leaving for the summer and we had that argument. You stopped responding to my insults and just stood there looking at me. I knew then that you had real feelings for me and that I’d just pushed them too far. I’ve never had anyone care about me as much as you do and I hope you know that I care about you just as much. You’re the most amazing, beautiful person I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and I love you completely. I was lucky to find you and I’m never letting you go. You’re stuck with me now.
He watched as Jess broke down in front of him.
Registrar: Miss Harris can we have yours please.
Jess (tearfully): Kris. You make me laugh, you make me cry but, overall, you make me happy. Being with you has changed me so much, for the better. I like the calming effect you have on me. I guess you melted my heart. I love you and I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure that you know just how much. You are incredible and I’m blessed to have you.
He started to break down to.
Registrar: Do you, Francis Kristopher Fisher, take Jessica Florida Harris to be you lawful wedded wife?
Kris: I do.
Registrar: Do you, Jessica Florida Harris, take Francis Kristopher Fisher to be your lawful wedded husband?
Jess: I do.
She linked her fingers through Kris's as they stood looking at one another.
Registrar: I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.
Kris didn't need telling twice. He pulled Jess to him and kissed her passionately, taking both their breaths away. That kiss was still in the forefront of his mind years later.
Back in the pub
Zoe: You've never told us your vows before. They were beautiful.
Zak: I agree.
Kris took a sip of his drink as he tried to regain his composure. Talking about his wedding had been harder than expected.
Kris (quietly): Thanks. Took me hours to write them.
He smiled softly at his friends before pulling himself back together.
Kris: So which one of you two is going next?
I hope that makes sense.
Kris and Jess fan
