In the living room Kris and Brian were getting along just fine, neither of them had said anything to offend the other so it had to be good. The main topic of conversation was of course Jess, Brian wanted to make sure that his daughter wasn’t being messed about, and that she was getting the treatment that she deserved.
“I know I don’t exactly look like boyfriend material but I do love her. I’d do anything for Jess.” Kris told him before letting out a small laugh as if he couldn’t be believe what he was saying. A look of confusion spread across Brian’s face and he took it as his cue to try and explain. “If someone told me that I’d fall hard and fast for her just after we met I would’ve told them where to get off…”
“Excuse me?”
“…we didn’t have the ‘normal’ friendship type thing; we hardly even had a friendship. All we did was argue…fight like cat and dog…annoyed each other beyond belief.” He explained and he was going to carry on but Jess and her mum came back in with the tea. Neither of them looked particularly happy.
“Jess what’s wrong love?” her dad asked as she slumped back down on the sofa and rested against Kris. Not really wanting to cause an argument she lied and told him that she was just feeling a little tired and cranky from being stuck in the most uncomfortable seats ever known to humans. Believing it he suggested that she go and take a rest but she told him she’d be fine for now.
“So what were you talking about then?”
“Kris was just telling me about you two, you going to finish it Kris?”
“There’s nothing left to say really.” He replied and Jess asked what he’d said. Quite happy to fill her in on it, her dad told her so that she could add the padding to it so to speak. Once she knew she tried to think of a way to tell them the better bits and miss out the bits in between. Being completely honest wouldn’t exactly fill her parents with confidence about their relationship but then again they’d find out the truth sooner or later.
“Come on Jessica…we’re waiting” her mother said, but it wasn’t really like she was genuinely interested in anything concerning Kris, and after what she’d heard about them fighting she was even less impressed by him.
“Ok…like Kris said things were difficult, we had our ups and downs, most of them were downs but when we got along we had a fun. We even seemed like good friends sometimes…” she told them and Kris started to look a little nervous, he already knew her mum didn’t like him, he didn’t really want both parents against him. “…things went totally wrong one day though, we couldn’t talk to each other and he left…he left me with a note to look after his stupid little stuffed animal” she said and she could feel the tears started to build up. “It was one of those times in your life when you realise how much a person means to you…a time when you’d do anything to have them back.”
“I knew you were no good, as soon as I laid my eyes on you. You’ve done nothing but cause my daughter pain…” Jo butted in but was soon stopped by Jess who carried on talking over the top of her. “Don’t hush me Jessica.”
“Oh for God’s sake stop with the act will you, we’re nothing special. You just thought that because we had money we were better than everyone else. You need to wake up; you’re no better than anyone else sat in this room, so get over yourself. And if Kris hadn’t come back then I wouldn’t be the person I am, he’s helped me to change, see that there’s more to life than clothes, shoes and handbags.”
“Calm down princess.” Kris told her but she shook her head and carried on with her rant at her mum, as much as it was amusing him he didn’t really want her to get too wound up. “Jess”
“So now you’re telling her what to do as well then, can’t you see he’s controlling you Jessica?”
“I’m trying to help, this isn’t doing anyone any good. I don’t want you and Jess to fall out over this.”
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Maybe we should all calm down, talk like responsible adults.” Brian voiced but no one was listening to him so he went back to being in the background.
“Since I was little you told me to go out and get what I want, make sure I’m happy and have someone that’s going to treat me right and I’ve found him. We’re happy and I thought that you’d be pleased.”
“With that you have to be joking.”
“Jo I think you’ve said enough.” Brian told her and she went to leave the room. “You can’t just walk away from her Jo, she’s our daughter.”
“I don’t know who she is; I mean why on earth would anyone bring that home with them?”
“I brought my fiancé home to mee-”
“Your fiancé?”
“Didn’t I tell you?” she asked with a wide grin on her face knowing for a fact that she hadn’t uttered a word about that or the baby, which she was planning on dropping into the conversation at any minute if her mum didn’t keep her pathetic opinions to herself.
“There is no way on this earth you’re marrying him…”
“I am here y’know. Jess I think it’s best if I leave now, I don’t think I want to hear this.” He said but Jess made him stay a while longer, she was going to finish what her mum had started. “Leave it for now Jess, now’s not a good idea.” He told her, clearly knowing exactly what she was going to do.
“What isn’t?”
“The only reason I’m here is because Kris told me that I had to come see you, tell you the news in person. I should’ve just phoned, it would have been cheaper.”
“Tell us what sweetie?” her dad asked and she felt bad for not telling her dad properly but at least he was going to find out.
“I’m pregnant.” She told them and her mum burst out laughing like it was all some big joke but Jess had never been more serious. “You’re going to be grandparents.”
“You stupid, stupid little girl. You’re completely ruining your life! Aren’t you going to say anything Brian?” she shouted at him while he stood there pretty much gob smacked. He wasn’t going to give her lectures though. She wasn’t a child anymore and her mum had to see that, so instead of shouting he congratulated her and Kris, which only disgusted Jo even more.
