Part 39

Mark was everywhere. Haunting his mind no matter what he did or where he went. He couldn’t even escape it when he was sleeping, all he saw in his dreams was Mark’s bloodstained body, all he heard was that fateful bang which reduced him to tears every time he thought about it. Never in his entire life had he felt worse. He had caused a clearly unhinged man to commit suicide. He had loved Mark, before he knew what he had done and he couldn’t turn his emotions on and off like a tap. No matter how much he tried. The worst part was, everyone pitied him. They shouldn’t pity him, a man was dead, and they should pity Mark and his family, not the guy who drove him to it! He just wanted people to blame him, to want him to feel bad. But they just wouldn’t. He even had a visit from Mark’s sister and even she didn’t blame him. She just apologized on Mark’s behalf. He hated all the pity; he hated everyone who told him it wasn’t his fault. Of course it bloody was! If the police hadn’t come after them, Mark wouldn’t have shot himself. Sure they might have died anyway, but there was a chance they both could have lived. But no one survives a bullet to the brain.

He had had enough of feeling miserable. He now realised that he may have contributed towards Mark’s suicide but it was the arrival of the police which had caused the final blow. And who was responsible for the police being there? Craig. John Paul was aware that he wasn’t thinking straight but he didn’t care anymore. All he cared about was that Craig had put the final nail in the coffin for Mark. And for that, he would pay.

John Paul didn’t even bother to ask Frankie if he could go up to see Craig. He just stormed up the stairs and kicked the door to Craig’s bedroom open, leaving them face to face. He mustered all the energy he could and punched Craig squarely in the jaw, harder than he had ever punched anyone before. Craig fell to the floor, his moth bleeding horribly, a couple of teeth lying on the carpet.

“You…called the police…killed him!” John Paul chocked, ready to launch himself at Craig. He just needed to release all the emotion welling up inside him; it was too much to bear. Before he knew it he was sobbing on the floor, clutching Craig to him like a child clutching a teddy bear.
Craig had his arms around him, patting his back and whispering words of comfort into his ear. He couldn’t bear to see his best mate like this, even if he had just delivered the mother of all punched into his mouth. As he was comforting John Paul, Just one thought was buzzing around is mind. But he didn’t have the heart to tell him he was leaving for Dublin in two days.

Part 40

John Paul had finally cried himself to sleep and was now lying on the Sofa bed downstairs. Everyone else was asleep as well, all except Craig. He had been agonizing for hours over what to do. He felt he couldn’t leave John Paul, not in this state but there was no way he could risk his future over some psycho ex boyfriend of John Paul’s. Craig’s shoulder was stinging terribly, making it impossible for him to sleep, even if he was to stop thinking about John Paul. He got up and tiptoed downstairs, trying not to wake any of his family. He entered the lounge and gazed in awe at the sleeping John Paul. He looked as if the stresses of the last few days had never happened. His face showed no sign of anxiety or worry; he was even smiling a little. Something Craig hadn’t seen him do for a long time.
Tears started to run down Craig’s face. He didn’t want to leave, not now, but he knew he had to. Sarah was going to pick him up in a few hours, they were spending the day (and night) together then the next morning they were going to the airport. He wished John Paul would come with him, he could dump Sarah and they could just leave together. Simple. If only John Paul wanted to go with him. Craig sighed and returned to his bedroom. He might not even see John Paul again. The tears had stopped but Craig felt sadder than ever.

John Paul kept waking up in the middle of the night. He daren’t go back to sleep, nightmares of Mark still haunted his mind whenever he slept. He was about to take something to eat from the Dean’s fridge when he heard footsteps coming down the stairs. John Paul lay back and pretended to be asleep. He recognized the person as Craig instantly. The way his breath sounded. Light yet urgent.
John Paul kept up his pretence at slumber. He didn’t feel like talking to Craig right now. Craig suddenly started to cry. John Paul had no idea why. The sound of Craig’s sobbing broke his heart but he still didn’t rise from his feigned sleep. Craig then started to climb the stairs again. John Paul wanted desperately to go after him but didn’t. Then another thought occurred to him. They were due to start University in a couple of weeks and Frankie had said that Craig needed time to settle in. Just how soon would Craig be leaving?
