Date: August 4th 2014 This was the date that seven old friends had agreed to meet on, 5 years after graduation. No matter where they were or what they were doing, all of them planned to spend a week reuniting. Each person had their own reason for not wanting to go.
Jess
“Will you just get on the plane already,” Chloe pleaded for the third time. “I’m not sure I can handle seeing him again,” Jess answered her friend. “Yes you can. You’re going to be brave and face your fears. Now go.” With that she pushed Jess towards the boarding gates and waved goodbye. “Sometimes you really annoy me,” Jess yelled as Chloe disappeared from view. Passing her ticket over, she thought about the people that she was meeting for the first time in years. In two hours time she would be sat in Gatwick airport with them and then there was no going back. As she boarded her flight out of Spain, the only emotion filling Jess was dread.
Kris and Zak
“I can’t believe that I’m actually going to see Zoe. I wonder what she’s been up to. Are you excited too? Kris?” Zak looked over at his best friend. “Is anyone home?” “Has it occurred to that, whilst you’re looking forward to seeing Zoe, I might be worried about having to see someone else?” Kris shot back. He took his bag out of the taxi boot and started to walk towards the airport. “You’ll be fine once she gets here. You two have the ability to carry on as if you haven’t been apart.” “Yes, back in college. This time is different,” Kris argued. “Lets just enjoy it. Don’t cause problems that might not be there.” Before Kris could answer, Zak grabbed hold of his arm and pulled him through the airport doors. They were going to have a long wait for the others.
They were going to have a long wait for the others.

“Hey Jess, it’s Zoe. I know you’re probably already on your way back to England but I just needed to say forget about everything I told you the other night. I was just drunk and emotional. No need to tell Zak anything. Can’t wait to see you all. Please pick up this message.” After turning her phone off and putting it in her pocket, Zoe checked the flight listings for her New York to London departure time. It would be hours until she saw everyone yet. She spotted a bar near and decided to settle there until the flight was called, her thoughts full of her old friends.
Gilly
“Shouldn’t you be more excited than this mate?” “Sorry?” Gilly asked. “Seeing as you’re going to the airport, I assume that you’re going on holiday. It’s supposed to signal fun and good times,” the taxi driver continued. Gilly sighed before answering. “Meeting a few people the I’d rather not. Experienced problems with them years ago.” The driver looked at him in his rear view mirror. “Problems?” “Dated people I shouldn’t have. Lost friendships that were important.” “Now is your chance to put things right,” the taxi driver offered. “Maybe,” Gilly muttered. “Maybe.” He paid his fare and shakily made his way over to the airport. Things were about to get difficult.
Elliot and Steph
“Will you hurry up!” Elliot yelled up the stairs. “One more minute,” Steph called down to him. She didn’t care how late they were but there was no way she leaving the house with no make up and untidy hair. “We haven’t got a spare minute!” “Calm down Ell. We’ll be fine.” “You’re getting the blame if we miss this flight,” he muttered out of earshot of his wife. “Lets go then.” Steph came rushing down the stairs, three bags of luggage in hand. “You can’t take all that!” Elliot still wasn’t used to her excessive packing. Ignoring him, she walked to the car and placed all three in the boot. “Fine I guess we are.” He followed her and quickly got in the driver’s seat. “Old gang here we come,” Steph laughed, unaware that Elliot was far from looking forward to their imminent meeting.

“You can try smiling once today. You might actually like it,” Zak sarcastically stated to Kris. They were the first of the group to arrive at the airport and had settled on drinking in the bar until the others appeared. “Thanks for the suggestion,” Kris muttered back just as sarcastically. He was letting his fear of seeing Jess get the better of him but had no way to stop it. She was the only person that could make him feel vulnerable back in college and the effect was still the same years later. “Please try and enjoy yourself.” Kris just nodded at him, keen to avoid another argument. He was fed up of the ones they constantly had over both Zoe and Jess. It appeared that neither had moved on from their college crushes. “Well, well, well. Look who it is,” a voice called from behind them. A voice that they were both unhappy to be hearing.
Gilly
Gilly slowly approached the table where Kris and Zak were sitting. “Alright?” Zak asked. “Fine thanks. What about you two?” Gilly asked back. He sat down opposite the pair. “We’re brilliant,” Kris stated through gritted teeth. “Good.” An uncomfortable silence fell between the three of them. It was broken only by Gilly asking the waiter for a drink. He studied both Kris and Zak as the realisation that he had not yet been forgiven hit him. They were both trying to look anywhere but at the seat that he occupied. “It’s going to be a long holiday,” Gilly absentmindedly muttered. “Tell me about it,” Kris agreed. After this brief conversation, the silence descended once again.

“I can’t believe that I can only use one bag as hand luggage,” Steph whined. “I did try telling you,” Elliot said coldly. “Well you could have made yourself heard.” He just rolled his eyes at her. After two years of marriage, Elliot had come to accept that he was always in the wrong. “Anyway, where would the others be?” “Bar,” Elliot stated without even thinking. Steph nodded and grabbed hold of his hand. They weaved in and out of the crowds until the table taken by three bored looking guys was spotted. “Hello, “ Steph yelled over enthusiastically. She was greeted with forced smiles. After being dragged over to the table, Elliot managed a weak grin at them all. “So how come you two came together?” Zak asked. Steph giggled before answering. “ I am now Mrs Stephanie Bevan!” “You’re married?” Kris spluttered. “Isn’t it great,” she beamed. Elliot nodded and shifted uncomfortably in his seat. A chorus of ‘congratulations’ followed. As small talk was made, Steph sat and eagerly waited for Jess and Zoe to arrive so that they could be told and wedding stories could be given.
Jess
Jess quietly made her way through the crowd of people looking for any sign of her former friends. She was secretly hoping that a few would have decided against coming. This hope disappeared, however, when she stopped a short distance from the crowded bar. The past that Jess had tried hard to forget in her new life in Spain was now sitting right in front of her. Taking Chloe’s previous words on board, she took a deep breath and walked over. “You’re here,” Steph shrieked at her. No-one else spoke. “Yeah,” Jess answered. She allowed herself to be pulled into a hug. Before there was chance to sit, a call for the group to make their way to the departure lounge was made. Jess quickly checked her to phone make sure that Zoe’s flight hadn’t been delayed and followed on after the group with Steph. An awkward silence still loomed amongst them.
