Chapter One
'What's a 16 year old supposed to do when faced with a problem like this? Are they supposed These were the two questions burning on 16 year old Nancy Hayton's mind as she sat on the edge of the bed in her pyjamas with the duvet still wrapped around her tightly; things hadnt been easy for her lately and no-one could blame her. Today was the first time she was doing back to school in months, after she was attacked and raped in the village; she felt safer knowing her attacker was behind bars but that wasnt her main worry right now. She looked down at the results in her hand the doctor had gave her just days before.
'why am i pregnant after everything i've already been through?'.
She looked up as she heard a knock at the door; she quickly put the results in her bag as the door opened.
"Time to get ready love" Charles said; she nodded in agreement before he left the room.
She quickly got changed, putting her hand on her stomach in the process, before putting on her jacket and grabbing her bag on the way out; she sat quietly in the car as Tony drove her to HCC before driving off again. As the bell went, she went into the school and headed to her dreading lessons; she would usually love to hear the stories from John Paul and Sarah of what they got upto lately but right now, she couldnt care less. They had noticed a huge change in her attitude and so had her teacher, Jacqui McQueen; at the end of the lesson, she asked Nancy to stay behind to discuss the work she had missed.
'Go ahead, i know what you're gonna say!'"Nancy, are finding the work to difficult to get back into?" Jacqui asked, concerned.
"No"
"So what's wrong?"
"You mean besides the obvious?!" she snapped back.
"Has something else happened?"
"It doesnt matter"
"Yes it does; if something's bothering you, then tell me"
"Why should i tell you anything?! You'll only have a go and tell me it's all my fault and i brought it on myself!" she snapped back before fleeing the room.
She went outside and stood against the wall as the wind blew in her face; she sighed as she
realised what she had just done.
'Great work Nancy; you've just done the worse thing possible'.She sighed before making her way back to the classroom and knocking on the door; looking
at the hurt on Jacqui's face made her feel more guilty.
"Can i talk to you?" Nancy asked.
"You can always talk to me Nancy but not if you're gonna turn anything back on me again, okay?"
"Okay"
"So what's really wrong then?" she asked as they sat upto the table, opposite each other.
"Everything but what i tell you, you cant tell my sister; you have to promise me?"
"It wont go outside these walls..."
"Thanks; i wasnt gonna say anything but i cant think of anything else. I'm not concentrating
in lessons and I'm snapping at the teachers and i'm actually scared."
"Go on."
"When i was...when i was raped a few months back, my confidence hit zero; i couldnt leave
the house, i fell behind with the work and as for my friends, i had no contact with them. They
dont know what happened to me; they just thought i was off ill or summat. Slowly, i've learnt to get my life back and not to let him win but it's gonna be harder than i thought and i dont know what my options are" Nancy finished, close to tears.
"What do you mean? You dont know what your options are?"
Nancy stared at her, with tears in her eyes and Jacqui instantly knew what she meant.
"Are you...are you pregnant Nancy?"
Nancy nodded as Jacqui took her hand, despite it been against school policy.
"Okay, when did you find out?"
"A couple of days ago" she said as she wiped away her tears with a tissue Jacqui had given her "I've been feel really crap for the last week or so and i know i was supposed to have a test done when i gave my statement but i didnt wanna know if he was always gonna control my life."
"It's okay; do you want me to go and get your sister for you?"
"No, i cant tell her; not yet. I've gotta find Justin and tell him everything and then there's my mom and dad..." she answered, panicking
"It's okay, do it when you are ready; listen, you're not gonna be able to concentrate now so why dont you go and call Justin and go home? I'll sort it out with your teachers..."
"Thanks Jacq..." she said as she got up and headed towards the door before turning back as Jacqui spoke.
"And don't worry Nance, things will be fine; we'll sort something out"
Nancy nodded before headed out of the classroom and the school; she took her phone out of her
pocket and scrolled down to Justin's number; she hit call before putting it to her ear and waiting for an answer, eventually she got one.
"Hello?"
Nancy didnt answer.
"Hello? Is anyone there?"
"Jay, it's me; i really need to talk to you; meet me outside the gate to HCC."
"Nance, i thought you were in lesson?"
"Please Jay; i'll explain everything when you get here"
"Okay then; I'll be as quick as i can"
"Bye..."
She hung up before putting her phone back in her pocket as she sat on the wall outside the gate to HCC.
Her and Justin had been going out for six months, despite both of their parents insisting it wouldnt last, that they werent in love, but they had proved them wrong. He had dropped out of school but had a part time job at Il Gnosh as a waiter; Nancy looked up as he came running ran the corner, out of breath as she ran over and stood in his arms, crying.
"Hey, Nance, what's wrong?"
"I...."
"It's okay; listen, my mom's at work so can go back to my place if you want?"
Nancy nodded as she wiped away her tears; Justin took her bag off her and put it on his shoulder as they headed back to the village. When they got back to the house, she sat on the sofa as he got her a drink and handed it to her as he sat next to her; holding her hand as she put the drink down and looked at him.
"There's something i havent told you and it's not that i didnt want to because i did but i was scared of how you would react; i needed time to get over it myself and try and come to terms with everything."
"Okay" he replied, confused.
"You have to promise me you wont fly off the handle when i tell you; it's the last thing i need right now"
"I promise"
"Okay...do you remember that day when you took me to the park and we ended up having that huge fight?"
"Yeah?"
"And i stormed off?"
"Yeah?"
"Something happened afterwards, on my way home; I got to the archway and someone, a bloke...he pulled me from behind...forced me into an alleyway and raped me..."
"Nance, why didnt you tell me?"
"I couldnt; i didnt want you thinking i was just...damaged goods..."
"But you're not; i love you and i'll stick by you no matter what is thrown at us"
"I was hoping you'd say that; i'm pregnant Jay..."
"Oh..."
"I'm 16, i've been attacked, i'm pregnant and for the first time in my life, I'm scared." she wept.
"Its okay; i'll be right by your side, every step of the way, i promise, come here..." he held her in his arms as she slowly
let all her emotions come out at once; she stayed that way until Becca turned up to take her back to her mom and dads. She turned round as she got to the door and looked back at Justin as he kissed her forehead.
"I'll meet you by the gate again in the morning, okay?"
"Thanks Jay, for listening to me"
"Anytime; love you"
"You too"
She smiled a little before leaving with her mom.
